Depending on the model of your Joybook, the appearance may be different from the illustrations shown in this manual.

Package contents

Before using your Joybook for the first time, please check if you have all the items with you. For details about what should be included in the package, refer to the Product Specification label on the product carton. If any of the items are missing or appear damaged, contact your dealer immediately. Save the packaging in case you need to ship your Joybook for service.

Getting your Joybook ready for use

1. Installing the battery pack
Close the lid of your Joybook (if open). Turn your Joybook upside down and place it on a soft clean cloth. With the label side of the battery pack facing down, slide it gently into the battery compartment until it snaps into place (1). Move the Battery retainer B to the other end as shown by the arrow to lock the battery pack into place (2).

Joybook will automatically start charging the battery.
• The battery pack is shipped with low charge from the factory. You can still use your Joybook while the battery is charging.
• Power systems and plug types may vary depending on your country/region.
• For details about the colors and meanings of the indicators, refer to "Indicators" on page 16.

Gently lift up the latchless lid that allows you to open the case easily.
4. Performing initial setup
Press the Power button to start up your Joybook, the Power button indicator then lights up in blue. And then follow the on­screen instructions to complete the initial Windows 7 setup.
• Your Joybook works best with Windows 7. Installing other operating systems that have not been tested is not recommended, and may not only void your warranty but also affect the functionality of your Joybook.
• The actual operating system that comes with your Joybook may vary. For details, refer to the Product Specification label on the product carton
Important:
It is strongly recommended to create Factory Recovery DVD immediately once your Joybook is ready for use. Refer to
"Creating a Factory Recovery CD/DVD" on page 49 for details.

Expanding the capabilities of your Joybook

Pay attention to the plug direction when making the following connections. Incorrect direction may cause damage to the device.
Connect an external display device (such as a monitor or

Connect USB peripherals to the USB port(s) of your Joybook.
Insert an ExpressCard/34 module or ExpressCard/54 module to further expand the capabilities of your Joybook.
Insert an SD, MMC, MS, or MS Pro memory card by following the direction indicated on the card to exchange files.

Connect an earphone to the audio output jack to output sounds.
Connect USB peripherals to the USB port(s) of your Joybook.
Connect a microphone to the microphone input jack to record sounds.

Connect an external hard disk or a device that has an eSATA/ USB interface to the eSATA/USB port of your Joybook.
Use the optical drive to access data on various kinds of discs and enjoy movies or music.

Built-in microphone
Receives sounds and voices for recording.
Wireless LAN (WLAN) / Bluetooth switch
Turns on/off Wireless LAN or Bluetooth.
Every time you power on the Joybook, Joybook
automatically sets to the state of Wireless and Bluetooth the last time you used the Joybook.
(7) Indicators
Refer to "Indicators" on page 16 for details.
(8) Save brightness
Toggles between the lowest visible brightness and the previously saved brightness.

Power button
Turns your Joybook on or off.
• When the system is on, it lights up in blue.
• When the system is in Sleep mode, it flashes in blue.
• When the system is off or in Hibernation mode, the light goes off.

(4) Vents
Dissipate heat and keep your Joybook at an optimal temperature.
To prevent overheating, do not obstruct the vents. For
example, do not use the Joybook in bed where a blanket may inadvertently cover the vents and block the airflow.

Connects AC power supply to power the Joybook and charge the battery.

LAN (Local Area Network) port (RJ-45
connector)
Allows the Joybook to connect to a 10/100Mbps fast Ethernet 100BASE-T network.
Please be careful to avoid plugging a RJ-11 phone
cable connector in the RJ-45 port. This will damage the LAN port. They look similar, but the RJ-45 connector is wider than the RJ-11 connector, and has more conductors.
(3) Kensington lock
You can attach an anti-theft Kensington lock and cable to this slot to help prevent possible theft.

15-pin D-sub video jack
Connects external display devices, such as monitors and projectors.
(6) HDMI-output port (Version 1.3a; Type A
connector)
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the digital interface standard for connecting high­definition (HD) consumer electronics components, which enhances the quality of your HD experience. With this HDMI-output port, you can connect a separate audio or video device that has an HDMI interface, such as an HDMI-capable display device, projector, AV receiver, or any compatible device.
• You need an HDMI cable (purchased separately) to connect your Joybook to an HDMI-capable device. For details about the connection, refer to "Using the HDMI­output port" on page 35.
• HDMI version is specific to the device, not the cable being used. When connecting two devices together, versions are backwards compatible but only the lowest version will be able to be used.
• Be aware that HDMI input must be HDCP-compliant to be displayed.
(8) ExpressCard slot
This ExpressCard slot accepts two formats of the standard ExpressCard modules: ExpressCard/34 and ExpressCard/54. The ExpressCard/34 module is characterized by its 34 mm width, and the ExpressCard/54 module is characterized by its 54 mm width. You can use an ExpressCard to further expand the capabilities of your Joybook.
Insert an ExpressCard into the slot following the direction indicated on the card and complete related driver settings.
(9) Four-in-One memory card slot
For an SD, MMC, MS, or MS Pro memory card.

Connects peripherals such as mice, digital cameras and MP3 players that use the USB 2.0 interface.

Connects to an earphone/headset or external speaker for playing the Joybook audio.

Connects an external hard disk or a device that has an eSATA interface to the eSATA port of your Joybook.
(5) DVD Super-Multi drive (varying by model)
The type of the optical drive varies by model, and the support of disc types depends on the optical drive that comes with your Joybook.
Supports multi-functional optical module for reading music CDs, VCDs and DVDs or burning CD-R/CD-RW, DVD+R/DVD-R/DVD+RW/DVD­RW or DVD-RAM (optional) discs. Discs can be inserted/ejected by pressing the small ejection button on the drive.

Microphone input jack
Connects to a microphone for recording sounds.
This jack is for 3.5mm analog audio plugs. It accepts
both mono and stereo plugs.
USB port
Connects peripherals such as mice, digital cameras and MP3 players that use the USB 2.0 interface.

Windows Mobility Center is a convenient location where you can quickly access your Joybook's settings, such as volume, battery status, and wireless network, etc.
To open Windows Mobility Center, press the + <X>

Using the touchpad

activates items on the screen.
The touchpad with its buttons is a pointing device that functions as an optional external mouse, which can perform navigation, scrolling and selection functions. The components of the touchpad are described as follows.

• To use the touchpad as an optional external mouse, press the left and right touchpad buttons, which provide the same click functions as an external mouse does.
• To move the pointer, place your finger with slight pressure on the touchpad and move in the direction as desired.
Do not use a pen, pencil, or marker on the touchpad. Use only your fingertip.
