Refer to the User Manual for basic information about the Smart-UPS and the Smart-UPS XL Supplement for additional information on extended r un versions of the
UPS. This supplement provides information on the battery packs.
Installation
Inspection
Inspect the battery pack upon receipt. Notify the carrier and dealer if there is damage. The packaging is recyclable; save it for reus e or dispos e of it properly.
Placement
This f igure shows the location of the batt ery pac k c onnector.
The battery pac k c onnector is c olor coded and keyed to p revent improper connect ion. Do not attempt to
install battery packs with connectors that are a diff erent color f rom the battery pack connector on the UPS.
Install up to 10 battery packs per XL model UPS following the instructions below.
1. Prepare the UPS t o connect the bat tery pack( s).
Note the holes used to attach the battery pack
conn ector cla mp (near the cent er of the
connector opening). Use a #2 Phillips head
screwdriver to remove the battery pack
conn ector cla mp from t he back of the UPS.
2. Turn the clamp over a nd loosel y at tach one end
at t he edge of the conn ect or openi ng in th e
UPS.
For additiona l battery packs, repeat this procedure u sing the battery pack connectors on the bat tery packs.
Note: Do not stack battery packs. Sta cking r esults in a tipp i ng hazar d .
3. Holding the clamp aside, insert the battery pack connector into
the UPS.
4. Secure th e connect or clam p .
Storage
Storage Conditions
Store the ba ttery pack covered and upright in a cool, dry locat ion, with its
batteries f ully charged. Before s toring, c harge the b attery pac k f or at least
4 hours.
Extended Stora ge
At -15 to +30 °C (+5 to +86 °F), charge t he b att ery pac k every 6 months
At +30 to +45
°C (+86 to +113 °F), charge the b attery pa c k ever y 3 months.
Battery Charge and Run Times
A floppy disk is shipped with each battery pack to configure your Smart-UPS for use with each new battery pack added. Your Smart-UPS need s to be conf i g ured
appropriat ely so that it ca n better c alculate the disc harge ti me. Connect the UPS’ p ort to a seri al por t on a P C or wor kstation running D O S or Wi ndows, by u sing the
blac k c olored communicat ions cab le inc luded. Next , while at the DOS p rompt, insert the floppy dis k into a dr ive and change to that drive’s letter (e.g.. A:) Then
type: battpack com[X] [Y], where [X] = 1 or 2 depending on t he s erial p ort used, and [Y] = number of battery packs attached to the UPS.

Replacing the Battery
This battery pack has easy to replace ho t-s wappab l e batteries. Ba ttery r eplacement is a saf e procedure, isola ted from electrical ha z ards . You may lea ve the UPS and
loads on f or the following procedur e. See your dealer or c all the number in this manu al for inf ormation on replac ement batt ery kits.
Note: Please read the cautions in the APC Safety Guide. Save your data before beginning this procedure. Once the battery is disconnected, the loads are
not protected from power outages.
Battery Replacement Procedure - Rack Mount XL Battery Packs
1.Reach into the finger pu ll and remove the front cover.
2.Use a flat-blade, screwdriver or coin to remove the battery
door s c rews and open the door.
Warning! Do not force the battery out. This may
damage internal wiring!
3.Disconnect the battery connector by pulling on the white
cord on the side of the batt ery.
4.Slide the battery out of the battery pack.
5.Remove the foam separator.
6.Repeat steps 3 - 5 for the second b att ery.
7.Repeat steps 3 - 6 for the two batt eries on the ot her side of
the battery pack.
Note: Be careful removing the batteries - they are heavy..
8.Slide the new battery into the battery pack.
9.Connect the b att ery connector
Note: Small sparks at the battery connectors are normal
during connection.
10. Push t he b attery in as far a s it will go. There are stops in
the ba c k to prevent it from going too far .
11.Replace the foam separator.
12.Repea t steps 8 - 1 0 for t he second battery.
13.Repeat steps 8 - 12 for the two batteries on the other side
of the battery pack.
14.Close t he battery door , replace the battery compartment
screws, and replace the front cover.
15.Dispose of the old batter y properly at an appropriate
recycling facility or return it to the supplier in the pa c king
material for the new battery. See the new battery
instructions for more information.
Battery Replacement Procedure - Tower XL Battery Packs
1.G rasp the si de of the front cover and tilt it out and down.
2.Unhook the bott om of the cover from the chassis and
remove it to expose the battery door
3.Use a flat-blade screwdriver or a coin to rem ove the two
battery door screws a nd open the door.
4.Pull the whit e cord on the front batter y c onnector t o remove
the battery connector.
5.Grasp the tab and gently pull the battery out of the battery
pack.
6.Reach into the battery compartment and grasp the white
cord on the other b attery connector. Pull firmly to
disconnect the connector and remove the second set of
batteries.
Note: Be careful removing the batteries - they are heavy..
7.Slide the first set of new batteries into the unit. Hold the
connector down below the t op of the batt eries and toward the
door, otherwise the assembly will not fit. Gu ide the
connector over the t op of the batteries and pres s firmly to
connect it to the rear connect or of the b attery compartment.
Note: Small sparks at the battery connectors are normal
during connection.
8. Slide the second set of batteries in, then guide the connec tor
over the b att eries and pres s firmly to connect it to the front
connector of the battery compartment.
9.Now close t he b att ery door, replace the s crews, and replac e
the fr ont cover.
10.Dispose of the old batter y properly at an appropriate
recycling facility or return it to the supplier in the pa c king
material for the new battery. See the new battery instructions
for more information.

Limited Warranty
APC® by Schneider Electric warrants its products to be free from defects in materials
and workmanship for a period of six months from the date of purchase. Its obligation
under this warranty is limited to repairing or replacing, at its own sole
option, any such defective products. To obtain service under warranty you must obtain a
Returned Material Authorization (RMA) number from customer support. Products must
be returned with transportation charges prepaid and must be
accompanied by a brief description of the problem encountered and proof of date and
place of purchase. This warranty does not apply to equipment that has been damaged by
accident, negligence, or misapplication or has been altered or modified in any way. This
warranty applies only to the original purchaser who must have properly registered the
product within 10 days of purchase.
