Micro Transceiver User Manual

Overview

ATI’s Micro Transceiver Series of products are direct-attach IEEE 802.3 and Ethernet
Version 1.0 and 2.0 devices. ATI supports all common Ethernet media with Micro
Transceivers for thin coax (10BASE2), UTP (10BASE-T) and fiber optic (10BASE-FL,
FOIRL) LAN systems. The transceivers support a single AAUI that attaches directly to
the AAUI 14 pin connection found on most Apple Macintosh® Ethernet stations
(DTEs).

All ATI transceivers are equipped with LEDs providing status and diagnostic informa­tion. LEDs make LAN installation and troubleshooting easy for the installer. An easily
accessible, user-selectable SQE Test switch (heartbeat) is also provided on all mod­els. ATI uses quality product packaging for increased reliability. ATI shows a high level
of confidence in the micro transceiver products with a lifetime limited warranty.

Preparation

An SQE Test switch provides IEEE 802.3 Ethernet SQE Testing. Enable the SQE Test
function by placing switch to “ON” when in use with Ethernet workstations or when­ever a repeater is not connected to the AAUI port. Disable the SQE Test/Heartbeat
function by placing switch to “OFF” when attaching the AAUI cable to an Ethernet
repeater, to eliminate the possibility of excessive collisions. “OFF” is the default set­ting.

Caution:

When working with fiber optic transmitters, eye damage may result if pre­cautions are not taken. Hazardous light emissions may exist in fiber optic systems.
Never look into a transmitting fiber optic device: transceiver, repeater, or cable.

Installation

Install the A T-MX80F or AT-MX90F directly to the Apple Macintosh DTE or workstation
AAUI port. Plug into the 14-pin AAUI connection on the DTE. When properly installed,
the connector will latch into place. Select SQE Test /Heartbeat function “ON” or “OFF”
depending on the DTE requirements. Disable the SQE Test function if a transceiver is
connected to an Ethernet repeater. Connect the fiber optic connectors to ST (MX80F)
or SMA-style (MX-90F) connectors. Ensure that the transmit connector on one side of
link goes to the receive connector on the fiber optic device at the opposite end of the
link. Maximum linkage distances permissible are 2000 meters (6556 ft.) for 10BASE­FL or 1000 meters (3278 ft.) for FOIRL. The AT-MX80F and AT-MX90F provide diag­nostic and status information with Transmit, Receive, Collision, Link Monitor and Jab­ber LEDs. These transceivers have Loopback function and built-in Jabber timer.

Beim Arbeiten mit Fiber Optic Systemen müßen die Augen geschützt wer­den. Sehen Sie niemals in das übertragende Fiber Optic Gerät (Transceiver,
Repeater oder Kabel), es können gefährliche Licktemissionen auftreten.

Installation

Der AT-MX80F/90F wird direkt am AAUI Port des Endgerätes bzw. der Workstation
installiert. Wird ein AAUI Kabel benutzt, darf es die Länge von 50 m (164 ft) nicht
überschreiten. Wählen Sie jetzt die SQE Test/Hearbeat Funktion entsprechend Ihren
Anforderungen (ON bzw. OFF). Wählen Sie die “OFF”-Stellung, wenn ein Repeater
mit dem Transceiver verbunden ist. Verbinden Sie die ST bzw. SMA Stecker mit den
Lichtwellenleitern. Vergewißern Sie sich, daß der Transmitstecker auf der einen Seite
mit dem Receivestecker des FO Gerätes auf der anderen Seite der Leitung ver­bunden ist. Fiber Optic Verbindungstrecken dürfen bis 2000 m 10BASE-FL/1000 m
(3278 ft.) FOIRL. lang sein. Der AT-MX80F/90F sieht Diagnose- und Statusinforma­tionen mit Transmit, Receive, Collision, Link und Jabber LEDs vor. Die Transceiver

Allied Telesyn (ATI) warrants to the original consumer/purchaser that this product, and all
components thereof will be free from defects in materials and/or workmanship for the
lifetime of the product. Any warranty hereunder is extended to the original consumer/
purchaser and is not assignable.

In the event of a malfunction or other indication of product failure attributable directly to
faulty workmanship and/or materials, ATI will, at its option, repair or replace the defective
products or components at no additional charge as set forth herein. Repair or replacement
product will be furnished on an exchange basis and will be either reconditioned or new at the
option of ATI. All replacement parts become the property of ATI. This limited warranty does
not include service or repair damage to the product resulting from accident, disaster, misuse,
neglect or modification of the product.

Service under this warranty may be obtained by returning the product to ATI, and only after
receiving authorization by ATI by issuance of a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number,
with shipping charges prepaid, in the original shipping container or like container, and with
proof of date of purchase included with the returned product. The RMA number MUST be
marked clearly visible on the outside of the shipping container. Any material returned without
such RMA markings shall be rejected and returned to sender unopened.

Products will be returned to the consumer after repair or replacement has been completed
and by the carrier and method of delivery chosen by ATI, to any destination within the United
States of America. If the consumer desires some other specific form of conveyance, or it is
located beyond the U.S.A. borders, then the customer shall bear the cost of the return
shipment.

ATI MAKES NO EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO,
ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR
PURPOSE, EXCEPT AS EXPRESSLY SET FORTH IN THIS WARRANTY. IN NO EVENT SHALL
ATI BE LIABLE FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, COSTS, OR EXPENSES
ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE USE OR PERFORMANCE OF THE
PRODUCT DELIVERED HEREUNDER.
