For your safety, please read the following text carefully. This appliance is supplied with a moulded three pin mains plug for your

safety and convenience. A 5-ampere fuse is fitted in this plug. Should the fuse need to be replaced please ensure that the replacement fuse has a rating of 5-ampere and that it is approved by ASTA or BSI to BS1362. Check for the ASTA mark Ï or the BSI mark Ì on the body of the fuse.

If the plug contains a removable fuse cover you must ensure that it is refitted when the fuse is replaced. If you lose the fuse cover the plug must not be used until a replacement cover is obtained. A replacement fuse cover can be purcha sed fro m your local deal er .

IF THE FITTED MOULDED PLUG IS UNSUITABLE FOR THE SOCKET OUTLET IN YOUR HOME THEN THE FUSE SHOULD BE REMOVED AND THE PLUG CUT OFF AND DISPOSED OF SAFELY. THERE IS A DANGER OF SEVERE ELECTRICAL SHOCK IF THE CUT OFF PLUG IS INSERTED INTO ANY 13-AMPERE SOCKET.

The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code: Blue: Neutral, Brown: Live. As these colours may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows: The wire which is coloured Blue must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter N or coloured Black or Blue. The wire which is coloured Brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter L or coloured Brown or Red.

WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT EITHER WIRE TO THE EARTH TERMINAL WHICH IS MARKED WITH THE LETTER E, BY THE EARTH SYMBOL Ó OR COLOURED GREEN OR GREEN/YELLOW.

Remove the connector cover.

How to replace the fuse

The location of the fuse differ according to the type of AC mains plug (figures A and B). Confirm the AC mains plug fitted and follow the instructions below. Illustrations may differ from actual AC mains plug.

1. Open the fuse cover with a screwdriver.

service personnel when any service is needed. The cabinet should never be opened for any reason.

17 Before moving this unit, press STANDBY/ON to set the unit in standby

When playing DTS encoded CDs, excessive noise will be heard from the analog stereo outputs. To avoid possible damage to the audio system, the consumer should take proper precautions when the analog stereo outputs of the player are connected to an amplification system.

∫ Playing DVDs and Video CDs

The producer of these discs can control how they are played so you may not always be able to control play as described in these operating instructions. Read the disc’s instructions carefully.

∫ Video systems

≥This unit can play PAL and NTSC, but your television must match the

system used on the disc.

≥PAL discs cannot be correctly viewed on an NTSC television. ≥This unit can convert NTSC signals to PAL 60 for viewing on a PAL

television (➡ page 18, Video—NTSC Disc Output).

∫ CD-R and CD-RW discs

This unit can play CD-R and CD-RW if they are formatted as CD-DA (digital audio) or video CD and finalized

Digital connection Analogue (6CH DISCRETE) connection

Connect an amplifier with Dolby Digital and DTS decoders. You can also enjoy high-quality stereo sound with sampling frequencies of 88.2 and 96 kHz if the material isn’t copyprotected and the equipment you connect is compatible with these signals.

Change “Digital output” (➡ page 19).

DIGITAL INPUT

Connect an amplifier with multi-channel audio input terminals to enjoy surround sound. This unit can decode Dolby Digital and DTS and there are no limitations on sampling frequency with this kind of connection. To obtain maximum performance of DVD-Audio multichannel linear PCM sound, the connections are recommended.

This unit equips three types of video jacks as follows:

This jack transmits conventional composite video signal. Connect this jack to your AV amplifier so that you can switch the both audio and video inputs at once.

This jack transmits color and luminance separately and achieves high quality color reproduction. Connect this jack to your television using a commercially available SVideo cable. If your AV amplifier is equipped with S VIDEO input and output jacks, connect to the AV amplifier so that you can switch both audio and video inputs at once.

This SCART jack can output RGB component signals and provides the best quality picture. Connect this jack to your television. ≥Change “Video—AV Output” (➡ page 18).

Plug the power cable into the AC IN when all connections are complete, and then plug this unit to the wall outlet.

Do not connect this unit to a television through a video cassette recorder. If you do so, the picture may not be played back properly due to the copyright protection technology incorporated in this unit.

Mishandling of batteries can cause electrolyte leakage which can damage items the fluid contacts and may cause a fire.

Remove if the remote control is not going to be used for a long period of time. Store in a cool, dark place.

Aim at the sensor (➡➡➡➡ page 5, Control reference guide), avoiding obstacles, at a maximum range of 7 m directly in front of the unit.

The QUICK SETUP screen appears when you press [SET UP] the first time after purchase and assists you to make necessary settings. You can access this screen again later if you need to (➡ page 18, Others— QUICK SETUP).

Preparation

Turn on the other equipment (amplifier, television, etc.) and select the audio/video input to suit the connections to this player.

∫ TV Aspect

Select “4:3” (regular) or “16:9” (widescreen) to suit your television. If you have a regular 4:3 television, you can also select how video on some discs is shown (➡ page 18, Video—TV Aspect).

≥4:3 Pan&Scan (Factory preset) Widescreen software is expanded to fill the screen of a 4:3 aspect television (unless prohibited by the producer of the disc).

≥4:3 Letterbox

Widescreen software is shown in the letterbox style on a 4:3 aspect television.
