PRECAUTIONS

Before using this unit please read these operating instructions carefully. Take special care to follow the warnings indicated on the unit itself as well as the safety suggestions listed below. Afterwards keep them handy for future reference.

Safety

1. Power Source—The unit should be connected to a power

supply only of the type described in the operating instructions or as marked on the unit. If you are not sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult your appliance dealer or local power company.

2. Polarization—If the unit is equipped with a polarized AC power

plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other), that plug will fit into the AC outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you

are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.

3. Power Cord Protection—AC power supply cords should be

routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them. Never take hold of the plug or cord if your hand is wet, and always grasp the plug body when connecting or disconnecting it.

4. Overloading—Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords

as this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock.

5. Nonuse Periods—When the unit is not being used, turn the

power off. When left unused for a long time, the unit should be unplugged from the household AC outlet.

6. Attachments—Do not use attachments not recommended by

the unit manufacturer as they may cause hazards.

Placement

1. Ventilation—The unit should be situated so that its location or

position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. Allow 10 cm (4q) clearance from the rear of the unit.

2. Foreign Material—Care should be taken so that objects do not

fall into and liquids are not spilled into the unit. Do not subject this unit to excessive smoke, dust, mechanical vibration, or shock.

3. Carts and Stands—The unit should be used

only with a cart or stand that is recommended by the manufacturer. The unit and cart combination should be moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces may cause the unit and cart combination to overturn.

4. Mounting—Any mounting of the appliance should follow the

manufacturer’s instructions, and should use a mounting accessory recommended by the manufacturer.

Maintenance

Disconnect this unit from the AC outlet before cleaning. Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine.

Installation

Environment

1. Water and Moisture—Do not use this unit near water—for

example, near a bathtub, washbowl, swimming pool, or the like. Damp basements should also be avoided.

2. Condensation—Moisture may form on the lens in the following

conditions…

³immediately after a heater has been turned on. ³in a steamy or very humid room. ³when the unit is suddenly moved from a cold environment to a

warm one. If moisture forms inside this unit, it may not operate properly. To correct this problem, turn on the power and wait about one hour for the moisture to evaporate.

3. Heat—The unit should be situated away from heat sources such

as radiators and the like. It also should not be placed in temperatures less than 5 oC (41 oF) or greater than 35 oC (95 oF).

Do not place the unit on amplifiers or equipment that may become hot.

The heat can damage the unit.

The model number and serial number of this product can be found on either the back or the bottom of the unit. Please note them in the space provided below and keep for future reference.

º Region Management Information

(DVD-Video only)

This unit responds to the Region Management Information recorded on DVD-Video. This unit’s region number is “1”. You cannot play the disc if the region number on the DVD-Video does not correspond to the region number on the unit. You can play discs with labels containing the region number “1” and “ALL”. Read the disc’s instructions carefully.

º Playing DVDs and Video CDs

The producer of the material can control how these discs are played. This means that you may not be able to control play of a disc with some operations described in these operating instructions. Read the disc’s instructions carefully.

º DVD-RAM discs

DVD-RAM discs must meet the following conditions for this unit to be able to play them. It may not be possible to play some discs due to the condition of the recording.

PAL discs (the audio on DVD-Audio can be played), DVD-RAM (2.6 GB, TYPE 1), DVD-ROM, DVD-R (some DVD-R can be played), CD-ROM, CDV, CD-G, iRW, DVD-RW, CVD, SVCD, SACD, Divx Video Discs and Photo CD.

º DVDs that can be played

This unit has a Dolby Digital decoder so you can play DVDs with this mark.

This unit has a DTS decoder so you can play DVDs

Note

³Remove TYPE 2 discs from their cartridges before use. Read the

instructions for the disc carefully.

³Do not allow the disc to become dirty or scratched. ³Store discs in their cartridges. Be sure the label of the disc and the

cartridge both face up when replacing the disc.

For your reference

Some parts of the disc, for example where one program ends and another begins, may not play smoothly.

MP3 playback

You can use this unit to play MP3 format audio recorded for personal use with a computer etc. onto CD-R or CD-RW. Play may not be possible in some cases due to the condition of the recording. Discs recorded using MP3 differ to CDs in the following ways.

If you record MP3 onto CD-R/CD-RW over a number of sessions, this unit can play only the recordings made in the first session.

³Recordings will not necessarily be played in the order you recorded them. The recordings will be reordered according to their titles:

numbers in numerical order first, upper case in alphabetical order next, and lower case in alphabetical order last.

³If you play an MP3 track that includes still picture data, it will take some time before the music itself starts playing and the elapsed time

will not be displayed during this time. Even after the track starts, the correct play time will not be displayed.

Disc handling

Do not use irregularly shaped discs, such as heart-shaped. (These can damage the unit.)

º How to hold a disc

Do not touch the recorded surface.

º If the surface is dirty

DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, Video CD, CD

Wipe it with a damp cloth and then wipe dry. Do not wipe with a circular motion; wipe straight outward from the center.

DVD-RAM

³Clean DVD-RAM only with the DVD-RAM/PD disc cleaner availa-

ble as an optional accessory.

³Never use cloths or cleaners for CDs, etc.

º Condensation

Moisture may condense on discs after being brought inside from the cold. If the disc is a DVD-RAM, use the DVD-RAM/PD disc cleaner available as an optional accessory to wipe it dry. With other discs, wipe with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

Batteries

³Insert so the poles (i and j) match those in the remote control. ³Do not use rechargeable type batteries.

Do not;

³mix old and new batteries. ³use different types at the same time. ³heat or expose to flame. ³take apart or short circuit. ³attempt to recharge alkaline or manganese batteries. ³use batteries if the covering has been peeled off.

Mishandling of batteries can cause electrolyte leakage which can damage items the fluid contacts and may cause a fire. If electrolyte leaks from the batteries, consult your dealer. Wash thoroughly with water if electrolyte comes in contact with any part of your body.

Remove if the remote control is not going to be used for a long period of time. Store in a cool, dark place. Replace if the unit does not respond to the remote control even when held close to the front panel.

Connection

As this unit has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoders (➡ page 34), you can enjoy discs recorded with these systems by connecting this unit to the 6-channel input terminals on an AV amplifier (connection [B] below). However, to enjoy the special sound effects available with AV amplifiers that can make you feel like you were in a cinema or hall, connect this unit digitally to the AV amplifier (connection [A] below).

Use analog connection [B] to enjoy the high quality audio (sampling frequencies of 192 kHz and 96 kHz) and multi-channel audio found on DVD-Audio. If the disc is copyright-protected, the audio can only be output through the digital output terminal if it is converted to 48 kHz.

The S VIDEO terminal achieves a more vivid picture than the VIDEO terminal by separating the chrominance (C) and luminance (Y) signals. (Actual results depend on the television.)

[B] COMPONENT VIDEO OUT terminal

These terminals can be used for either interlace or progressive output and provide a purer picture than the S VIDEO terminal. Connection using these terminals outputs the color difference signals (P

B/PR) and luminance signal (Y) separately in order to achieve

high fidelity in reproducing colors. ³The description of the component video input terminals depends

on the television or monitor (e.g. Y/P Connect to terminals of the same color.

³After making this connection, change the black level for a better

1. Connect to the component video (480p) input terminals on a television compatible with this unit’s copy guard system. Video will not be displayed correctly if you connect to a television that is incompatible with this unit’s copy guard system.

2. Press [PROGRESSIVE ON] on the front panel so the indicator lights (➡ page 15).

Recording to MDs or cassette tapes

º Analog recording

You can record to an MD or cassette deck. Using analog connection means sound will be unaffected by the copy guards found on DVDs.

To make an analog recording

Connect the recording equipment with an audio cable (➡ page 10 [D]).

º Digital recording

You can record the digital signal directly onto an MD. The signals on DVDs will be converted to 48 kHz/16 bit linear PCM. Ensure the following conditions are met.

³There is no copy guard recorded on the disc. ³The recording equipment can handle a sampling frequency of

48 kHz/16 bit.

To make a digital recording

1. Connect the recording equipment with an optical or coaxial digit-

al audio cable (➡ page 9 [A]).

2. When recording DVDs, make the following settings.

Note

gins. Use analog recording if this persists. These phenomena occur because DVD players must first determine the audio format and sampling frequency before switching digital output.

Playing CD-R and CD-RW

This unit can play CD-DA (digital audio) and Video CD format audio CD-R and CD-RW that have been finalized

upon completion of recording. It may not be able to play some CD-R or CD-RW due to the condition of the recording.

Finalizing is a process that enables CD-R/CD-RW players to

play audio CD-R and CD-RW.

Note

³If “” appears on the television

The operation is prohibited by the unit or disc.

³The disc continues to rotate while the menu is displayed even after

you finish playing an item. Press [º] when you finish to preserve the unit’s motor and your television screen.

³Volume may be lower when playing DVDs than when playing other

discs or during television broadcasts. If you turn the volume up on the television or amplifier, ensure you reduce the volume again before playing other sources so that a sudden increase in output does not occur.

º Auto standby

The unit switches to the standby mode after about 30 minutes in the stop mode.

The position you stopped play at is recorded by the unit when “!” is flashing on the unit’s display. While “!” is flashing on the unit’s display, press [1] (PLAY) to start play from where you stopped it.

If you are playing DVD-Video, the illustrated message also appears. Press [1] (PLAY) while the message is displayed and the beginning portions of each chapter up to the current one are played. Full play resumes from the point where you stopped play. (This feature works only within a title.)

If you do not press [1] (PLAY), the message disappears and play starts from where you stopped it.

To clear the programmed tracks one by one

Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to select the item number (No) and press [CANCEL]. Alternatively, press the cursor buttons [3, 4, 2, 1] to select “Clear” and press [ENTER].

To clear the whole program

Press the cursor buttons [3, 4, 2, 1] to select “Clear all” and press [ENTER]. The whole program is also cleared when the unit is turned off, or the disc tray is opened.

To exit the program mode

Press [PLAY MODE] while stopped until the program play screen disappears. ³The program is retained in memory.

Selecting programs to play— DIRECT NAVIGATOR

When a program list is recorded on the disc, you can use it to find programs you want to watch and start play.

1 Press [DIRECT NAVI].

The program list is displayed and the program currently selected plays in the background.

2 Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to

select the program you want to watch.

You can also select a program with the numeric buttons. Step 3 is unnecessary.

To enter a 2-digit number

Example: 17, press, [S10] ➡ [1] ➡ [7].

3 Press [1] (PLAY) or [ENTER].

Play of the program that was playing in the background continues.

To clear the program list

Press [DIRECT NAVI]. (The unit returns to the condition it was in before you called up the program list.)

To display information about a selected program

1. Do steps 1 and 2 to select the program, then press the cursor button [1] to select “Contents” on the right side of the list.

2. Press [ENTER].

The background picture pauses. Press [ENTER] to return to the program list.

If there are 6 or more programs

Press the cursor button [4] while program 5 is highlighted. The programs not currently shown are displayed each time you press the cursor button.

³Program and disc titles are displayed only if they have been

entered.

Using the play list menu to play specific scenes

Finding and playing particular scenes is simple if the disc has play lists recorded on it.

1 Press [PLAY LIST].

The play list screen is displayed.

2 Press the cursor buttons [3, 4] to

select the play list you want to watch.

³If you press [ENTER] or select a play list with the numeric

buttons, all the scenes in the play list are played from the beginning.

3 Press the cursor button [1] to select

“Contents” on the right side of the list and press [ENTER].

select “Scene List” and press [ENTER].

5 Press the cursor buttons [3, 4, 2,

Changing soundtracks, subtitle languages and angles

Some DVDs have multiple soundtracks, subtitle languages and camera angles, and you can change these during play.

Soundtracks

The number changes each time you press the button. ³Play restarts from the beginning of the soundtrack when playing

DVD-Audio and DVD-RAM soundtracks that are accompanied by still pictures.

³Even if a second soundtrack isn’t recorded on a DVD-Audio, two

soundtrack numbers will normally be shown when you press [AUDIO]. The soundtrack currently playing is number 1.

³You can also use this button to turn the vocals on and off on kara-

oke discs. Read the disc’s instructions for details.

guages and angles only by using the disc’s menus.

³Soundtrack and subtitle languages can be set before play

(➡ page 29, Disc—Audio and Subtitle).

³“–” or “––” is displayed instead of the language number in

circumstances such as when no language is recorded on the disc.

³Some discs allow you to set angles before multi-angle

scenes are played. Read the instructions that come with the DVD.

³In some cases, the subtitle language is not changed to the

selected one immediately.

³If the subtitles overlap closed captions recorded on discs,

turn the subtitles off.

[DVD-V] (Dolby Digital, center and rear speakers only) For optimum listening with 5.1-channel sound, all the speakers, except for the subwoofer, should be the same distance from the seating position. If you have to place the center or rear speakers closer to the seating position, adjust the delay time to make up for the difference. If distance @ (from the center speaker) and B (from the rear speakers) are the same as or greater than A (from the main speakers), leave the delay time as “0”, the factory preset. If either distance @ or B is less than A, find the difference in the relevant table and change to the recommended setting.

Glossary

Bitstream

This is the digital form of multiple channel audio data (e.g., 5.1 channel) before it is decoded into its various channels.

Decoder

A decoder restores the coded signals on DVDs to normal. This is called decoding.

This is a method of coding digital signals developed by Dolby Laboratories. Apart from stereo (2-channel) audio, these signals can also be 5.1-channel audio. A large amount of audio information can be recorded on one disc using this method.

Dolby Pro Logic

A surround system where a 4-channel audio track is recorded as 2 channels and then is restored to 4 channels for play. The surround channel is monaural and can reproduce up to 7 kHz.

DTS (Digital Theater Systems)

This surround system is used in many movie theaters around the world. There is good separation between the channels, so realistic sound effects are possible.

Dynamic range

Dynamic range is the difference between the lowest level of sound that can be heard above the noise of the equipment and the highest level of sound before distortion occurs.

Film and video

DVDs are recorded using either film or video. Film is recorded at 24 frames per second, the rate movies are filmed at, although some recent progressive material is recorded at 30 frames per second. Video is recorded at 30 frames per second.

I/P/B

MPEG, the video compression standard adopted for use with DVD-Video, codes frames using these 3 picture types. I: Intra coded picture (I-picture)

This is the standard picture and is a complete picture in itself.

This means it has the best picture quality and is the best to

use when adjusting the picture.

P: Predictive coded picture (P-picture)

This picture is calculated based on past I or P-pictures.

B: Bidirectionally-predictive coded picture (B-picture)

This picture is calculated by comparing past and future I and P-pictures so it has the lowest volume of information.

Linear PCM (pulse code modulation)

PCM is the usual digital method used for music CDs. DVDs have a greater volume so they use linear PCM, which has a higher sampling rate. Compressed PCM signals are called packed PCM (PPCM).

Optical digital audio cable

This cable carries optical digital signals to the amplifier to reduce noise caused by electronic interference.

Pan&Scan/Letterbox

In general, DVD-Video are produced with the intention that they be viewed on a widescreen television with an aspect ratio of 16:9. This means you can view most material with the intended aspect ratio on a widescreen television. Material with this ratio will not fit onto a standard television with an aspect ratio of 4:3. Two styles of picture, “Pan&Scan” and “Letterbox”, deal with this problem. Pan&Scan: The sides are cut off so the picture fills the screen. Letterbox: Black bands appear at the top and bottom of the picture

so the picture itself appears in an aspect ratio of 16:9.

Frame still and field still

Reference

A still is shown when you pause a moving picture. A frame still is made up of two alternating fields, so the picture may appear blurred, but overall quality is high. A field still is not blurred, but it has only half the information of a frame still so picture quality is lower. Frames are the still pictures that go together to make a moving picture. There are about 30 frames shown each second. One frame is made up of two fields. A regular television shows these fields one after the other to create frames.

Interlace and progressive output

NTSC, the video signal standard, has 480 interlaced (i) scan lines, whereas progressive scanning uses twice the number of scan lines. This is called 480p. The 480i video signals output from this unit’s COMPONENT VIDEO OUT terminals (Y, P enjoy higher quality pictures than if the signals were output from the video output terminal or S VIDEO OUT terminal. The COMPONENT VIDEO OUT terminals are also able to handle 480p (progressive) video signals which are of even greater resolution.

Playback control (PBC)

If a Video CD has “playback control” written on it or its jacket, it means that particular scenes or information can be selected for viewing interactively with the television using the menu screen. This unit can play Video CDs with playback control. Using menus to control play of a Video CD is called “menu play” in these operating instructions.

Play list

This is a collection of scenes. It enables you to play these scenes in succession or to select specific ones to play.

Program

This is a division on DVD-RAM.

Direct navigator

This is a list of programs you have recorded. You can select programs from the list to view. The list also shows the date and time of recording, the channel, and the titles of titled programs. The selected program is played in the background, making selection even simpler.

Sampling rate

This is the number of samples of sound taken per second during conversion to a digital signal. Sampling frequency is expressed in kilohertz (kHz). A high sampling frequency results in a sound close to the original when played back.

Title/Chapter

DVD-Video are divided up into large sections, titles, and smaller sections, chapters. The numbers allocated to these sections are called title numbers and chapter numbers.

Track

This is the smallest division on DVD-Audio, CD, and Video CD, and usually equates to a single song.

Troubleshooting guide

Before requesting service for this player, check the chart below for a possible cause of the problem you are experiencing. Some simple checks or a minor adjustment on your part may eliminate the problem and restore proper operation. If you are in doubt about some of the check points, or if the remedies indicated in the chart do not solve the problem, contact your authorized YAMAHA dealer or service center for instructions.

Power

No power.

The unit is automatically switched to the standby mode.

Operation

No response when buttons pressed.

No operations can be performed with the remote control.

Play fails to start even when [1] (PLAY) is pressed. Play starts but then stops immediately.

Alternative languages fail to be selected.

³Insert the AC power supply cord securely into the household AC outlet. 9

³To conserve power, the unit automatically switches to standby after approximately 30 minutes in

the stop mode. Turn the power back to ON.

³Some operations may be prohibited by the disc. ³The unit may not be operating properly due to lightning, static electricity or some other external

factor.

Reset procedure:

Press [STANDBY/ON] to switch the unit to the standby mode and then back to ON. Alternatively, press [STANDBY/ON] to switch the unit to the standby mode, disconnect the AC

power supply cord, and then reconnect it.

³Check the batteries are installed correctly. 6 ³The batteries are depleted: Replace them with new ones. 6 ³Point the remote control at the remote control sensor and operate. 6

³Condensation has formed: Wait 1 to 2 hours for it to evaporate. ³This unit cannot play discs other than DVD-RAM, DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, Video CD and CD. 5 ³This unit cannot play DVD-Video with a region number other than “1”, “ALL” or multiple region

numbers including “1”. 5

³The disc may be dirty and may require cleaning. 6 ³Ensure that the disc is installed with the label of the side to be played facing upwards. < ³Check that the DVD-RAM has something recorded on it.

³An alternative language is not selected with discs which do not contain more than one language. ³In the case of some discs, the alternative language cannot be selected with [AUDIO] or

[SUBTITLE]. Try selecting it from the disc’s menu if one is available. =

Reference

No subtitles.

Soundtrack and/or subtitle language is not the one selected with the SET UP menus.

Angle cannot be changed.

You have forgotten your ratings password. Reset all the settings to Factory Preset.

Sound

No sound. Distorted sound.

Piercing noise comes from the speakers.

³This function is dependent on software availability. Even if a disc has a number of angles

recorded, these angles may be recorded for specific scenes only. G

³While stopped, press and hold [,] and [;] on the unit and then also press and hold [<] on the unit until “Initialized” disappears from the television. Turn the unit off and on again.

All settings will return to the default values.

³Check the connections. 9 : ; ³Check the volume on the equipment you have connected. ³Ensure that the input settings for the television and stereo system are correct. ³If you have connected this unit to an amplifier through the AUDIO OUT terminals, go to the Audio

menu in the SET UP menus, and change “Speaker Setting” to suit your speakers. Select the

large or small icon for all the speakers you have connected. P

³Turn Virtual Surround off if it causes distortion. F ³Output from this unit will be in stereo (two channels) when Virtual Surround is on. Turn Virtual

Surround off if you are using three or more speakers. F

³Due to the specifications on some types of televisions, both video and audio may be cut off when

you turn the VIDEO OFF feature on. ?

³If the “D.MIX” indicator on the FL display goes out while playing a multi-channel DVD-Audio disc,

sound will only be output from speakers specified by the disc. Read the disc’s instructions for

details.

³If you have connected this unit to other equipment through the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT terminal,

ensure you have selected the correct settings for “Dolby Digital” and “DTS Digital Surround”

in the SET UP menu’s Audio menu. Q

Troubleshooting guide

Picture distorted.

No picture.

The picture shown on the television is not normal. (The sides of the picture are cut off or black bands appear at the top and bottom of the screen.)

There is ghosting when progressive output is on.

Colors are strange.

Picture quality is poor.

There is a lot of ghosting.

Displays

“No Play” appears on the unit’s display.

³Some distortion is normal during SEARCH. ³The screen may be disrupted briefly when you turn off the VIDEO OFF feature. ?

³Ensure that the equipment is connected properly. 9 ; ³Make sure the television is on. ³Ensure the television’s video input setting (e.g., VIDEO 1) is correct. ³If “This disc is PAL system. The output is sound only.” is on the television, then you have loaded

a PAL system DVD-Audio and only the audio portion of the disc can be played.

³Go to the Video menu in the SET UP menus, and change “TV Aspect” to suit your television. You

may also need to change the screen mode on the television itself. O ³If you are using progressive output, try changing 4:3 ASPECT and Shift Position with the onscreen menu icons. K

³Ensure that the unit is not connected through a video cassette recorder. 9 ³You cannot view progressive video if your television is not designed to receive progressive

signals. Press [PROGRESSIVE ON] to turn PROGRESSIVE ON off. ?

³Turn PROGRESSIVE ON off. This problem is caused by the editing method or material used on the DVD, but should be corrected if you use interlace output. ?

³Check the setting for output with the on-screen menu icons. K

³Check the settings in the on-screen menu’s video menu. K

³You inserted a disc the unit cannot play; insert one it can. 5 ³You inserted a blank DVD-RAM.
