HAM2SD – PHOTOELECTRIC SMOKE DETECTOR
1. Introduction & Features
To all residents of the European Union Important environmental information about this product
This symbol on the device or the package indicates that disposal of the device after its lifecycle could harm the environment. Do not dispose of the unit (or batteries) as unsorted municipal waste; it should be taken to a specialised
company for recycling. This device should be returned to your distributor or to a local recycling service. Respect the local environmental rules.
If in doubt, contact your local waste disposal authorities.
Thank you for purchasing this device. Please check carefully that there is no damage caused by transportation. Should there be any, consult your dealer and don’t use this device. Read this manual carefully before bringing the device into use.
Tested according to EN14604 as far as applicable.
Currently there are two kinds of smoke detectors available: the ionization alarm and the photoelectric smoke detector. Although both alarm types are suitable for general home use, an ionization alarm will react to blazing fires more quickly whereas the photoelectric detector is more sensitive to smouldering fire. Because of the fact that fires develop in an unpredictable way and that it is impossible to predict their magnitude, it is not possible to tell which kind of alarm system will give the earliest possible warning. That is why it is advisable to install both types to ensure the best possible home security.
2. Security measures
In certain situations, a smoke or fire detector will not provide protection against fire as defined in standard NFPA
74. For example: when smoking in bed, when children are in the house without supervision, when cleaning with inflammable liquids (gasoline).
Damage caused by disregard of certain guidelines in this manual is not covered by the warranty and the dealer
will not accept responsibility for any ensuing defects or problems.
All modifications of the device are forbidden for safety reasons. Damage caused by such modifications is not
covered by the warranty. Never overload the machine.
3. Installation and mounting
Your smoke alarm is designed for easy ceiling mounting. A complete installation kit is supplied with every smoke alarm. First, hold the mounting brackets to the ceiling and mark the 2 drilling holes. Drill the holes and attach the mounting brackets to the ceiling with the supplied screws.
For wooden panelling and wooden beams, use a 2.5mm drill and drill to a depth of only 20mm. Attach the support with the supplied screws.
For concrete or brickwork, use a 5.5mm drill and drill to a depth of 25 – 30mm. Make sure that the plugs have a secure grip in the drilling holes, should this not be the case, look for another drilling position or use other plugs.
Insert the battery and attach the alarm system to the brackets. The system is equipped with a safety which makes it impossible to attach the alarm system to the bracket without the battery having been inserted first. When the alarm does not fit into the brackets, make sure the battery is inserted correctly.

4. Recommended mounting locations
Install the smoke alarm in the immediate vicinity of the bedroom. Secure the escape route, as often the bedroom
is the farthest away from the exit. Should there be more than one bedroom, install other alarm systems in each bedroom.
Also install an alarm system in the stair case, because in case of fire, stair cases could serve as chimneys,
expanding the raging fire.
Make sure you install at least one smoke alarm on every floor.
Install a smoke alarm in rooms where smokers are sleeping or where there are electric devices.
Smoke and combustion residues rise and spread horizontally. Install smoke detectors in the centre of the ceiling, as
this is the nearest point for every space in the room. Ceiling mounting is advisable in living quarters, whereas in mobile quarters installation on the sides is the best solution, as to avoid a possible thermal barrier beneath the ceiling.
If you install the detector on the ceiling, make sure that there is at least 60cm between a side wall and 60cm
between every corner (see diagram A) and the detector. Install the detector at max. 50cm below the ceiling.
WARNING! DO NOT INSTALL THE SMOKE ALARM IN:
A kitchen – kitchen smoke could trigger the alarm.
A garage – combustion gases are also formed when you start your car.
In front of heating devices and climate control units.
At the highest point of a saddle roof.
In rooms with temperatures under 5°C (44°F) or above 37.8°C (100°F).
Do not attach the smoke detector to the ceiling of campers or such. The sun warms the ceiling and the air in the
upper part of the room. Warm air can prevent the smoke of a dangerous smouldering fire from reaching the detector.
THE SMOKE DETECTOR WILL NOT FUNCTION WITHOUT BATTERY. WHEN THE LOW-BAT SIGNAL SOUNDS, INSERT A NEW, GOOD BATTERY. TEST THE SYSTEM ON A WEEKLY BASIS.
5. Planning and practising an escape route
THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF AN ESCAPE ROUTE
Create a floor plan on which every door and window is indicated and which contains at least two escape routes
for every room. For windows on the second floor you could need a rope or ladder.
Call a family meeting to discuss the escape route and teach everyone what to do in case of fire.
Acquaint yourself with the alarm sound of the smoke alarm and instruct everyone on how to leave the building in
case of alarm.
Mark the children's bedrooms with red stickers in the upper left corners of the windows. These can be obtained
from your local fire department.
Practise the evacuation at least every six months. Practise helps you to optimise your evacuation plan. It is
important that you know what to do.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF ALARM?
Immediately leave the building according to your evacuation plan. Every second counts, do not waste time by
getting dressed or taking valuable objects with you.
Never open a door without touching its surface. When the door is hot or when you can see smoke coming from
under it, do not open it. Take the alternative route instead. If the door is cool, put your shoulder against it and open the door slightly. Prepare to close the door shut in case of penetrating smoke or heat.
Keep low in smoky air. Breathe through a cloth, wet if possible.
6. False alarm
The smoke alarm is designed to minimise false alarm. Cigarette smoke will normally not trigger the detector, except when the smoke is directly blown in the direction of the detector. Combustion particles, also formed when cooking, could trigger the alarm especially when it is close to cooking devices. A large amount of combustion particles and smoke are usually formed when cooking. If the system indicates an alarm, first check whether there actually is a fire source. If there is no fire, check the possibilities for triggering the fire alarm. If there is any question as to the
cause of an alarm, it should be assumed that the alarm is due to an actual fire and the premises should be evacuated immediately.
7. Use, testing and maintenance
USE: The detector is functional as soon as a battery is inserted. When combustion particles are detected in the air, a loud alarm will sound. The alarm will stop as soon as the air is clean. TEST: Push the test button at least 4 seconds until the alarm sounds. A self test program is activated: the alarm sounds when the circuit, siren and battery are functional. It is advisable to test the system every week to ensure correct operation. When the alarm does not sound, it is probable that the battery is defective. Try a new one.
Maintenance: The alarm is almost maintenance-free. In dusty environments however, it is advisable to use the vacuum cleaner to clean the outer part of the detector.
CHANGING THE BATTERIES
Normally, a carbon zinc 9VDC battery should last 1 year (alkaline battery: 2 years). The smoke detector has a "low-bat" indicator and an audible tweeting. This lasts for 30-40 sec. for 30 days. Change the battery when you hear this. Only use 9V batteries (available in most drug stores, hardware stores and electro shops).
Carbon-zinc type: Eveready #216; Gold Peak #1604P (UL); Gold Peak #1604S; Gold Peak #1604G; Premisafe
#G6F22.
Alkaline type: Eveready Energizer #522; Gold Peak #1604A; Vinnic AM9V; Duracell #MN1604. Lithium Type: Ultralife #U9VL
The smoke detector should be tested with the test button whenever the battery is replaced. Please contact your dealer when the detector fails to operate correctly.

2. Veiligheidsmaatregelen
In enkele gevallen biedt een rookmelder geen voldoende bescherming tegen vuur zoals omschreven in standaard
NFPA 74. Voorbeeld:
roken in bed, kinderen thuis zonder toezicht, schoonmaak met brandbare vloeistof (benzine).
