Chapter 1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the TD-W8901N 150Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router.

1.1 Product O verview

The device is designed to provide a simple and cost-effective ADSL Internet connection for a private Ethernet or IEEE 802. 11n/ IEEE 802.11g/ IEEE 802.11b wireless networ k.
The TD-W8901N connects to an Ethernet LAN or computers via standard Ethernet ports. The ADSL connection is made using ordinary telephone line with standard connectors. Multiple workstations can be networked and connected to the Internet using a single Wide Area Network (WAN) interface and single global IP address. The advanced security enhancements, IP/MAC Filter, Application Filter and URL Filter can help to protect your network from potentially devastating intrusions by malicious agents from the outside of your network.
Quick Start of the Web-based Utility is supplied and friendly help messages are provided for the configuration. Network and Router management is done through the Web-based Utility w hich can be accessed through local Et hernet using any web browser.
ADSL
The TD-W8901N supports full-rate ADSL2+ connectivity conforming to the ITU and ANSI specifications. In addition to the basic DMT physical layer functions, the ADSL2+ PHY supports dual latency ADSL2+ fra m ing (f as t and interleaved) and the I.432 A TM Physical Layer.
Wireless
In the most attentive wireless secur it y, the mode m router provides multiple protect ion me asure s. I t can be set to turn off the wireless network name (SSID) broadcast so that only stations that have the SSID can be connected. The m odem rout er provides wireless LAN 64/12 8-bit WEP encryption security, WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK authentication, as well as TKIP/AES encryption security.

Chapter 2. Hardware Install at ion

2.1 The Front P ane l

you have already made a right connection, please contact your ISP to make sure if your Internet service is available now.
2. If the Internet LED is off, please check your ADSL LED first. If your ADSL LED is also off, please refer to Note 1. If your ADSL LED is GREEN ON, please check your Internet configuration. You may need to check this part of information with your ISP and make sure everything have been input correctly. Refer to 4.1.1 Device Info and 4.3.1 Internet information.

2.2 The Back Panel

POWER: The Power plug is wher e you will connect the power ad apt er . ON/OFF: The switch for t he power.  WiFi: Press this but t on to enable or disable Wireless LAN interface.  WPS/RESET: The switch for the WPS function. If your client devices, such as wireless
adapters, support Wi-Fi Protected Setup, then you can press this button for about two seconds to quickly establish a connection between the router and client devices and automatically configure w ir eless sec urity for y our w ireless net wor k. For det ails, plea se re fer t o

If you press this button for more than 8 seconds, you will enable the RESET
function. There are tw o w ays to reset the modem router's factory defaults.

Method one: With the modem router powered on, press and hold down the WPS/RESET
button on the rear panel for at least 8 seconds until some LEDs go off, then release the button. Method two: Restore the default setting from “Maintenance-SysRestart” of the modem router's Web-based Utility.

ADSL: Through the port, you can connect the modem router with the telephone. Or you can
connect them by an external separate splitter. For details, please refer to

2.4 Connecting the

The Product should not be located where it will be exposed to moisture or ex ces sive heat.  Place the m odem router in a location where it can be connected t o the various devices as w ell
as to a power source.
Ma ke sure the cab les a nd pow er cor d ar e safely placed out of the way so th ey do not cr eat e a
tripping hazard.
The modem router can be placed on a shelf or desktop.  Keep away from the strong electromagnetic radiation and the device of electromagnetic
sensitive.
Generally, TD-W8901N is placed on a horizontal surface. The device also can be mounted on the wall as shown in Figure 2-3.

Note:

2.4 Connecti ng t he Modem Router

Before installing the device, please make sure your broadband service provided by your ISP is available. If there is any problem, please contact your ISP. Before cable connection, cut off the power supply and keep your hands dr y. You can follow the steps be low t o install it.
Step 1: Connect the ADSL Line.
Method one: P lu g one en d of the t wi sted-pa ir A DSL cable into th e ADSL port on the rea r panel of TD-W8901N, and insert the other end into the wall socket.
Method two

• LINE: Connect to the wall jack

• MODEM: Connect to the ADSL port of TD-W8901N
Plug one end of the twisted-pair ADSL cable into the ADSL port on the rear panel of TD-W8901N. Connect the other end to the MODEM port of t he ext er nal splitter.
Step 2: Connect the Ethernet cable. Attach one end of a network cable to your computer’s
Ethernet port or a regular hub/switch port, and the other end to the LAN port on the TD-W8901N.
Step 3: Power on the computers and LAN devi c es. Step 4: Attach the power adapter. Connect the p ower adapt e r to t he power connector on the rear
of the device and plug in the adapter to an electrical outlet or power extension. The

Chapter 3. Quick Installation Guide

3.1 TCP/IP Configuration

The default IP address of the TD-W8901N 150Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router is
192.168.1.1. And the default Sub net Mas k is 255.255.255. 0. These v alues can be chang ed as you
desire. In this guide, we use al l t he default values for description. Connect the local PC to the LAN port of the Modem Router. And then you can configure your PC
to an obtain IP address in the following way:
1) Set up the TCP/IP Protocol in "Obtain an IP address automatically" mode on your PC. If you need instructions as to how to do this, please refer to T3 in
Troubleshooting.
2) Then the built-in D H CP s erver will assign IP address for the PC.
Now, you can run the Ping command in the command prompt to verify the network connection. Please c lick the Start menu on your desktop, select run tab, type cmd or command in the field and press Enter. Type ping 192.168.1.1 on the next screen, and t hen press Enter.
If the result displayed is similar to the screen below, the connection between your PC and the modem router has been e stablished.

The LEDs of LAN port whi ch y ou lin k to the d ev ice and t he LE Ds on y our PC's adapter s hou ld be lit.
2) Is the TCP/IP configurat i on for your PC correct?
If the modem router's IP address is 192.168.1.1, your PC's IP address must be within the range of 192.168.1.2 ~ 19 2. 168. 1. 254.

3.2 Login

Once your host PC is prop erly configured, please proceed as fo llows t o us e the Web-based Utility: Launch your web browser and ent er http://tplinkmodem.net or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
After that, you will see the screen shown below, enter the default User Name admin and the default Password admin, and then click Login to access to the Web-Management page. You can follow the steps below to c om pl et e the Quick Start.

Step 1: Select the Quick Start tab, then click RUN WIZARD, and you will see the next screen.

Step 3: Select your country and ISP, and select your ISP Connection type (Here we take
PPPoE/PPPoA mode for example), and complete the corresponding settings with the
information provided by your ISP, then click the NEXT button.

If the Access Point is activated, the wireless function will be available even without the external antenna because of an additional printed antenna. To adopt the wireless security protection measures, please refer to 4.3.3 Wireless.

Chapter 4. Software Configuration

This User Guide recommends using the “Quick Installation Guide” for first-time installation. For advanced users, if you want to know more about this device and make use of its functions adequately, maybe you will get help from this chapter to configure the advanced settings through the Web-based Utility.
After your successful login, you can configure and manage the device. There are main menus on the top of the Web-based Utility; subm enus will be av ailable after y ou click one of t he main menus. On the center of the Web-based Utility, there are the detailed configurations or status information. To apply any settings you hav e alter ed on the page, please click the SAVE button.

4.1 Status

Choose “Status”, you can see the next submenus: Device Info, System Log and Statistics. Click any of them, and you w il l be able to configure the corresponding function.

Choose “Status→Device Info” menu, and you will be able to view the device information, including LAN, WAN and ADSL. The inf ormatio n wil l var y dependin g on t he set tings o f the modem router configured on the I nt er fac e Set up screen.

4.1.2 System Log

Choose “Status→System Log” menu, and you will be able to query the logs of the modem router.

Click the CLEAR LOG button to clear the logs. Click the SAVE LO G button to save the logs.

4.1.3 Statistics

Choose “Status→Statistics” menu, and you will be able to view the net work traffic over Ethernet, ADSL and WLAN.

4.3 Interface Setup

Choose “Interface Setup”, you can see the next submenus:.
