The DBE 4120 is a single service encoder, which performs the compression of video and audio sources. The provision of extensive hardware and software options allows customising and upgrading the system in order to match with customer requirements.
The video source is a SDI signal for the standard model but a composite video (PAL, SECAM or NTSC) source can also be provided as an option. Video compression is achieved either in MPEG-2 4:2:0 MP@ML or 4:2:2P@ML standard.
A TS input option allows daisy chaining of several encoders in order to multiplex related services within the same output transport stream. Two audio channels, which can be de-embedded from the SDI stream or received through separate analogue or AES/EBU audio sources, are processed. Audio compression is performed according to the ISO/IEC 11172-3 layer 2 standard. On option, up to eight additional stereo audio can be multiplexed with the SDI primary signals, as well as data.
The DBE 4120 has been designed as a 2 RU height, 19" sub-rack, easy to install and operate. A range of network interfacing options is proposed for PDH or SDH network interconnection with ATM mapping. Thanks to its user-driven menu, it can be easily controlled and monitored locally from the front panel keypad, or remotely through an Ethernet link with the DBS 2930 management software or with an SNMP agent in an NMS environment.

Benefits
4:2:2 and 4:2:0 high performance compression
Thanks to its second generation Thomson chipset, designed in order to improve the performance encoding, the DBE 4120 encoder features advanced processing capabilities such as adaptive video pre-processing and new compression features such as five-level hierarchical motion estimation, far-ranging motion vector calculations and two-pass rate control, resulting in valuable savings of bit rate for the same video quality. Furthermore, when picture content must be preserved, the encoding can be simply changed by software controlled switching from the 4:2:0 format into the 4:2:2 format.
Maximum interfacing flexibility
Besides the basic encoder configuration, four extension slots and software options are available such that a specific combination of cards and software additional functions can be used to tailor a customised configuration: composite video input, addition of analogue or AES/EBU audio channels, ATM interface for PDH or SDH networks, data and VBI multiplexing for broadcast customising, scrambling for content protection, etc.
Helper Channel capability (option)
The Helper Channel software option allows minimizing the loss in picture quality when several encoding-decoding processes occur in cascade. The Helper Channel information is carried by using one VBI line. Automatic detection of re-encoding data set is achieved.
Extensive audio handling (option)
Up to eight additional audio signals can be compressed. These are embedded within the incoming SDI signal or external AES/EBU coded audio. Overall encoder capability may be achieved with 10 digital stereo audio channels.
Low and ultra-low delay mode capability (option)
Delays in live interviews between different locations can be optimized with the low delay mode option, providing less than 290 ms end-to-end delay, and now down to 140 ms with the ultra-low delay mode.
VBI lines transport
The DBE 4120 encoder provides the capability of transporting VBI lines from either 50 or 60 Hz, SDI or analogue sources system.
Scrambling capability
DVB compliant common scrambling is provided as an option, in order to preserve the content and the access, as may be required for instance for post-production.

Management
The DBE 4120 management can be achieved locally through the front panel keypad and LC Display, or remotely from the TBS supervision system.
The local management performed through the front panel menu-driven interface allows to select the proper video input (SDI, PAL, etc) and the profile (4:2:2P@ML or MP@ML) to control the transmission parameters and to recall, store or erase up to 12 pre-set configurations. Also controlled through the encoder front panel interface are the basic parameters of the encoder (alarm and bit rate monitoring, reboot, delay mode, scrambling mode) and that of the optional system components (network interface)
For remote management two possibilities are offered, depending of the specific requirements: either with the DBS 2930 software dedicated to MPEG-2 system, or with as an embedded SNMP agent within a Network Management System environment.
