Purpose

Amethyst III offers the utmost in performance, flexibility, high-density, and delay capability to increase the robustness and maximize uptime of your broadcast and transmission chains—and ensure that your MPEG-2 transport stream (ATSC or DVB) can be properly secured.
Figure 1-1. High-density and delay compensation
Available with Gigabit Ethernet interfaces or ASI interfaces, Amethyst III is perfectly suitable for any type of architecture: new IP-centric networks as well as widely deployed ASI based head-ends.
To maximize service availability, Amethyst III is equipped with dual power supply/pl configurable bypass mechanism on Gigabit Ethernet and ASI interfaces, even in case of power failure.

Robust, Highly Configurable Testing

Amethyst III supports a variety of tests depending on your requirements. You can individually select and configure these tests through an easy-to-use graphical user interface. For example, it is easy to select and set error severity criteria as well as a persistence time to avoid unwanted switching when transitory events occur. Amethyst III supports TR 101 290 tes
ts (Priority 1/2/3), which enable a complete health-status check of your digital DVB network. It also supports testing and monitoring models that provide the same level of comprehensive information for ATSC environments. To improve redundancy, template checking of expected packet IDs, rate limits, and/or scrambling status of various critical program components is available. For DVB-T systems, it also performs relevant measurements on MIP packets.

Chapter 1 ’Overview’ — Purpose

DVB-T SFN Capability

Amethyst III ASI provides smart redundancy switch for DVB-T terrestrial networks, that is, seamless switching support for:
Transport streams with MIP from NetProcessor SFN adapters
Transport streams with MIP (duplicated signal) transmitted over two separate paths (delay compensation required)
Amethyst III realigns the transport streams according to MIP and preserves the structure of DVB-T megaframes on its output in case of switching. Service outage caused by DVB-T modulator is avoided. Perfectly combined with the NetProcessor, Amethyst four independent (or combined) switches in 1-RU.
III supports up to

DVB-T2 SFN Capability

Amethyst III ASI provides smart redundancy switch for DVB-T2 terrestrial networks, that is, seamless switching support for:
T2-MI streams from NetProcessor T2 gateways (v04.70 or upper)
T2-MI streams (duplicated signal) transmitted over two separate paths (delay compensation required)
Amethyst III realigns the T2-MI streams and preserves the structure and timestamp on its output in case of switching. Service outage caused by DVB-T2 modulator is avoided. Perfectly combined with the NetProcessor, Amethyst switches in 1-RU.
III supports up to four independent (or combined) T2-MI

Delay Compensation Capability

Amethyst III also offers delay compensation capability by simultaneously analyzing delayed (from several milliseconds to several seconds) input streams. If one input is detected as being corrupted, Amethyst compensates the time difference and switches seamlessly to the other, uncorrupted stream without any disturbance to end users. Typical applications include network distribution redundancy.

Configuration and Supervision

III
Amethyst III has an embedded Ethernet 10/100Base-T port and contains a fully configured Web server that you can access remotely through any standard browser for equipment control and supervision. It also provides a complete display of switching configurations along with easy-to-read input/output status information, error-log data, and bit rate graphics. The Amethyst applications.

Chapter 1 ’Overview’ — System Applications

System Applications

Amethyst III is intended to protect Digital TV network, for applications requiring fast and efficient 1 + 1 Transport Stream redundancy in various architecture models:
Full ASI architectures
Full IP architectures

Device Redundancy

Amethyst III can protect:
ASI single- or multi-output devices.
Up to 4 [1 + 1] ASI Inputs can be managed.

Head-End Redundancy

Head-End redundancy is similar to device redundancy where multiplexers are the devices to be secured.

Network Redundancy Application

The stream is duplicated for redundancy purposes and is conveyed by two paths, one being more direct than the other one.

For instance, on path #1 than by path #2. Consequently, the second stream arrives later
n the first one.

In this case, Amethyst III’s time delay feature lets you apply a delay on input 1 (path #1). Secondly, the delay compensati resynchronize the two streams. Stream conveyed by path #1 is thus
ayed to be synchronized with the stream of path #2. In this case,
del sync
hronization is made on a user-defined PID (e.g.: PAT with PID=0).

SFN Stream Redundancy

Figure 1-13. System overview: DVB-T/T2 SFN stream redundancy (ASI only)
For SFN systems in DVB-T/T2, it is imperative that the terrestrial transmitters broadcast:
The same signal
On the same cell
At the same frequency
At the same time
To do so in DVB-T, Amethyst III uses the signaling information present in the transpor
t stream, namely the Megaframe Initialization Packets (MIP),
which are generated by the SFN adapters in the head-end.
When redunding 1+1 SFN adapters, it is necessary to preserve the M
IP positioning when switching from one piece of equipment to another. Amethyst III is able to realign two streams
originating from two Thomson Video Networks NetProcessor SFN adapters by using the PID of the MIP (PID=21).
To do so in DVB-T2, Amethyst III realigns the T2-MI streams present in the tra
nsport stream. The T2-MI streams host DVB-T2 frames data and
various parameters (signaling, transmission and synchronization).
When redunding 1+1 T2 gateways, it is necessary to preserve the T2-MI struc
ture and timestamp. Amethyst III is able to realign tw
o streams originating from two Thomson Video Networks NetProcessor T2 gateways.
In both DVB-T/T2 architectures, Amethyst III guarantees the broadcasting contin
uity, as the terrestrial transmitters detect no discontinuity when switching from a piece equipment to another. Service outage caused by the modulators resynchronization (up to 30 seconds) is avoided.
