Troubleshooting
If you experience any problems with the unit, please take a moment to
look through this chart and see if you can solve the problem yourself
before you call your dealer or ESOTERIC customer service/ technical
support. Moreover, the problem might be caused by something other
than this unit. Confirm that connected devices are also functioning
properly.
General
No power.
e Check the connection to the AC power source. Confirm that the
AC source is not a switched outlet and, if it is, that the switch is
turned on. Make sure there is power to the AC outlet by plugging
another item such as a lamp or a fan into it.
Make sure the power cord is firmly seated in the IRC connector

Remote control does not work.
e Press the POWER button of the main unit to turn it on.
e If the batteries are exhausted, change the batteries (page7).
e Use the remote control unit within the effective range (7
m/23feet) and point it toward the remote sensor on the front
panel.
e Make sure that there are no obstacles between the remote
control unit and the main unit.
e If a fluorescent light or radiant type electric heater is near the
unit, turn it off.
Check all buttons on the remote control to ensure none of them
are stuck in the down position.
Other units with remote controls operate incorrectly.
e Note that other units with remote controls may operate
incorrectly because of infrared light “overspill” when you operate
the remote control of this unit.
Will not play.
e Reload the disc with the label side up. If the label side is not up,
place the disc on the tray correctly.
e If the disc is dirty, clean the surface of the disc. If the disc is
scratched or has any sticky substance on its surface, do not
play the disc until you have corrected the condition of the disc.
Do not use after-market stick-on labels or “disc enhancement”
devices that sit on top of a disc or wrap around a disc under any
circumstances. Do not use felt pen edge enhancement options
on a disc played back in this unit. Use of these enhancements
may also cause a disc read error.
e If the unit has moisture condensation, leave the unit for one or
two hours with the power turned on.
e If a disc is noticeably scratched do not use it.
Buttons do not work properly.
e If another operation is still in progress, wait a moment and try
again.
Severe hum or noise is heard.
e Place the unit as far away from TVs as possible.
Make sure your unit is grounded to the D/A converter and/
or preamplifier. Use the ground lug on the back of the P-02 to
connect to other devices.
There is no sound from the speakers or sound is distorted.
e Check that your D/A converter, amplifier and speakers are
connected securely (page8).
e
Set the digital output correctly for the connectors in use (see
pages 20, 22–23).
e Check the operation manual and settings of the amplifier.
e If the disc is dirty, clean the surface of the disc.
e If the unit is in pause mode, press the PLAY button to resume
normal playback.
No digital output from a Super Audio CD
e Digital audio output from a Super Audio CD requires an Esoteric
ES-LINK compliant D/A converter (D-01, D-02, D-03 or D-05) or a
D/A converter with i.LINK (AUDIO) terminals.
e
For multi-channel sound output, connect a D/A converter that
supports multi-channel output to the i.LINK (AUDIO) connector, set
the output to "Multi" (see page 19), and set the disc playback area
to "SACD Multi" before starting playback (see page 18).
Word Sync
The WORD indicator flashes.
e The word sync mode is selected, but there is no clock source. Set
the word sync mode to “OFF” or “auto” (page 22).
e An incompatible signal is being input. Check word sync
connections and the settings made on connected devices.
The display shows “No Word!”
e No word clock signal is being received. Check cables, connections
and the settings of the external word clock generator.
e If no word clock signal is being received, set the word sync mode
to “OFF” or “auto” (page22).
The display shows “WRD ERROR!!”.
e An invalid word sync signal is being received. Check the
connection of the WORD SYNC connector and setting of the
connected clock generator.
The input frequencies permitted for this unit are 44.1 kHz, 88.2
kHz, 176.4 kHz, 10MHz and 22.5792 MHz (page 22).
The display shows “WRD UNLOCK!” “10M UNLOCK!”
e The unit is unable to lock to the input word sync signal. Check
the settings of connected devices (page 22).
The display shows “TRAY ERR!” when the disc tray is opened
or closed.
e “TRAY ERR!” appears when the disc tray stops when opening or
closing because of an obstacle in front of the tray or because the
disc has not been properly loaded. Remove the cause of the error
and press the OPEN/CLOSE button again to open or close the
tray.
Since this unit uses a microcontroller, external noise and other
interference can cause the unit to malfunction. If this occurs,
turn the power off and restart operations after waiting for
about one minute.

i.LINK (IEEE 1394)
i.LINK is also known as IEEE 1394, an international specification.
This unit supports i.LINK (AUDIO).
By connecting an i.LINK (AUDIO)-capable device to the IEEE 1394/i.
LINK (AUDIO) terminal on this unit using an i.LINK cable, you can
transmit Super Audio CD multi-channel signals, which could only be
transmitted in analog format in the past. In addition to being able
to transmit signals in their original digital format, the unit can also
transmit 2-channel linear PCM data and multi-channel compressed
audio signals.
If you have multiple i.LINK-capable devices, you can connect them
through other devices to transmit data between them. Generally,
you do not need to be concerned with the order of connection, but
please read the section below about data transfer rates to ensure
optimal setup.
DTCP copyright protection system
To play back audio recorded on Super Audio CD or DVD discs using
i.LINK, both the player and the D/A converter need to support the
DTCP (Digital Transmission Content Protection) copyright protection
system. This unit is ready for DTCP.
Data transfer rate
There are three transfer rates: 100 Mbps (S100), 200 Mbps (S200),
and 400 Mbps (S400). This unit is capable of transferring data at the
maximum rate of 400 Mbps.
For connection with an i.LINK-capable device, use a commerciallyavailable S400-compliant 6-pin i.LINK cable.
How to connect multiple i.LINK-capable devices
Daisy chain connection
You can daisy-chain up to 17 devices including this unit.

When connecting multiple i.LINK-capable devices, avoid connecting
a device that has a slower transfer rate between devices that have
higher transfer rates since this will reduce the transfer rate of the
whole system. Connect devices that have higher transfer rates as
close to the source as possible.
NOTES
< i.LINK formats include "MPEG-2 TS" for BS digital sources and "DV"
for digital video for DVD recorders, as well as "i.LINK (AUDIO)"
(A&M Protocol). Never connect devices that do not support i.LINK
(AUDIO) to this unit. Doing so could cause this unit and the other
equipment to malfunction or be damaged.
< When in the process of data transfer, avoid plugging and
unplugging i.LINK cables or switching the power on or off.
< Among i.LINK-capable devices are some that are not capable of
relaying data when not turned on.
< Some i.LINK-capable devices might not respond to this unit’s
commands.
< A receiving device might not support the output modes of this
unit. Read through the instruction manual of any device that you
wish to use before making connections.
An i.LINK connection is necessary for multi-channel playback of a
Super Audio CD without downmixing.
The i.LINK interface of this unit is designed in accordance with the
following specifications:
1) IEEE Std 1394a-2000 Standard for a High Performance Serial Bus
