6 Clean only with dry cloth.

7 Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in

accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

8 Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators,

heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including ampliers) that produce heat.

9 Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized

or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. A grounding type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wide blade or the third prong are provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.

10 Protect the power cord from being walked on or

pinched particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.

The apparatus draws nominal non-operating power

• from the AC outlet with its POWER or STANDBY/ON

switch not in the ON position. The mains plug is used as the disconnect device, the

• disconnect device shall remain readily operable.

Caution should be taken when using earphones or

• headphones with the product because excessive sound

pressure (volume) from earphones or headphones can cause hearing loss.

• contact TEAC for a service referral. Do not use the prod-

uct until it has been repaired.

Do not install this apparatus in a confined space

• such as a book case or similar unit.

The apparatus should be located close enough to

• the AC outlet so that you can easily grasp the power

exposed to sunshine, fire or excessive heat. CAUTION for products that use replaceable lithium

• batteries: there is danger of explosion if a battery is

RACK-MOUNTING THE UNIT

Use the supplied rack-mounting kit to mount the unit in a standard 19-inch rack, as shown below.

Remove the feet of the unit before mounting.

CAUTIONS ABOUT BATTERIES

This product uses batteries. Misuse of batteries could cause a leak, rupture or other trouble. Always abide by the following precautions when using batteries.

Never recharge non-rechargeable batteries. The

• batteries could rupture or leak, causing fire or injury.

When installing batteries, pay attention to the polarity

• indications (plus/minus (+/–) orientation), and install

them correctly in the battery compartment as indicated. Putting them in backward could make the batteries rupture or leak, causing fire, injury or stains around them.

When you store or dispose batteries, isolate their

• terminals with insulation tape or something like that

to prevent them from contacting other batteries or metallic objects.

When throwing used batteries away, follow the dispos-

• al instructions indicated on the batteries and the local

disposal laws.

Do not use batteries other than those specified. Do not

• mix and use new and old batteries or different types of

batteries together. The batteries could rupture or leak, causing fire, injury or stains around them.

Do not carry or store batteries together with small

• metal objects. The batteries could short, causing leak,

rupture or other trouble.

Do not heat or disassemble batteries. Do not put them

• in fire or water. Batteries could rupture or leak, causing

fire, injury or stains around them.

If the battery fluid leaks, wipe away any fluid on the

1 – Introduction

Thank you for your purchase of the TASCAM CD-200iL CD Player / iPod Dock.

Before connecting and using the unit, please take time to read this manual thoroughly to ensure you understand how to properly set up and connect the unit, as well as the operation of its many useful and convenient functions. After you have finished reading this manual, please keep it in a safe place for future reference.

1 – Introduction

Precautions for placement

•

The operating temperature should be between 5°C and 35°C (41°F and 95°F).

•

Do not place the unit in the following types of locations. Doing so could degrade the sound quality or cause malfunction.

Places with frequent vibrations Near windows or in other places with direct exposure to

sunlight Near heating equipment and other extremely hot places Extremely cold places Very humid places and places with poor ventilation Very dusty places

•

Place the unit so that is level.

•

In order to assure good heat dispersion, do not place anything on top of the unit.

•

Avoid installing this unit on top of any heat-generating electrical device such as a power amplifier.

Power supply

Connect the unit to the standard power outlet. Hold the plug when connecting and disconnecting the power cord.

Beware of condensation

If the unit is moved from a cold to a warm place, or used immediately after a cold room has been heated or otherwise exposed to a sudden temperature change, condensation could occur. Should this happen, leave the unit for one or two hours before turning the unit on.

About discs

In addition to audio CDs (CD-DA), the CD-200iL can play CD-R and CD-RW discs on which audio CD, MP3, MP2 or WAV format files are recorded. The CD player can also play 3-inch CDs.

Handling of compact discs

•

Always place the compact discs in the trays with their label facing upward.

•

To remove a disc from its case, press down on the center of the disc holder, then lift the disc out, holding it carefully by the edges.

•

Do not touch the signal side (the unlabeled side). Fingerprints, oils and other substances can cause errors during playing.

•

To clean the signal side of a disc, wipe gently with a soft dry cloth from the center towards the outside edge. Dirt on discs can lower the sound quality, so clean them and always store them in a clean state.

•

Do not use any record spray, anti-static solutions, paint thinner or other chemical agents to clean CDs. This could damage the delicate playing surface and cause CDs to become unplayable.

•

Do not attach labels or anything else to discs. Do not use discs that have residue from, for example, tape or stickers that have been removed from the disc surface. Do not use discs that have exposed glue around the edges of stickers, for example. Loading such discs in the unit could cause them to become stuck or cause the unit to malfunction.

•

Never use commercially-available CD stabilizers. Their use could make playback impossible or cause the unit to malfunction.

•

Do not use cracked discs.

•

Only use circular compact discs. Do not use non-circular promotional, etc. discs.

Cleaning the unit

To clean the unit, wipe it gently with a soft dry cloth. Do not wipe with chemical cleaning cloths, paint thinner, ethyl alcohol or other chemical agents to clean the unit as they could damage the surface.

Once every five years, please contact the retailer where you purchased the unit or a TASCAM service center for internal cleaning. If the unit is not cleaned for a long time and dust is allowed to accumulate inside it, fire or malfunction could result. Cleaning is more effective when conducted before the humid season. Please check with us about the cost of internal cleaning.

•

Some record companies sell copy-protected discs or copy-controlled discs that may not play back correctly in this unit. Since such discs may not conform with the CD standard, do not use them in this unit.

•

If you experience problems with such non-standard discs, you should contact the producers of the disc.

2 – Names and functions of parts

1 POWER switch

Press this switch to turn the unit on or off.

CAUTION

Before turning the power on, minimize the volume of the connected device. Failure to do so could cause loud noises that might result in harm to your hearing or other trouble.

2 Disc tray

Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to open the disc tray and load/remove the disc.

Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to close the disc tray.

3 OPEN/CLOSE button

Use to open and close the disc tray.

4 PLAY/PAUSE button

Press during playback to pause. When playback is stopped or paused, press to start playback.

5 STOP button

When the current source is CD playback.

When in program setting mode, press this button when a track is selected to cancel the selection and return to the state where you can select a track again. (See “Setting the program” on page 22.)

Press this button when you can add a track to a new program step to clear the entire program. (See “Clearing the program” on page 24.)

6 SEARCH m/,[.//] buttons

Press briefly to select tracks (skip). Press and hold to search a track.

7 PHONES jack and knob

Use this standard stereo jack to connect stereo headphones. Use a plug adapter when connecting headphones with mini-plugs.

Use the PHONES knob to adjust the headphone output level.

8 AUX IN jack

Use this stereo mini jack for line level audio input. Connect a portable digital audio player or other external

audio device to it.

CAUTION

Before connecting an external device to the AUX IN jack, minimize the volume of that device. Failure to do so could result in sudden loud noises that could, for example, harm your hearing.

9 DOCK FOR iPod

This iPod dock is compatible with Lightning connectors and 30-pin connectors. (See “Connecting an iPod or iPhone” on page 14.)

NOTE

When connecting an iPod or iPhone with a 30-pin connector, be sure to attach a dock adapter suitable for your iPod or iPhone to the 30-pin dock connector. Dock adapters are not included with this product. Use one that came with your iPod or iPhone or purchase an Apple Universal Dock Adapter made by Apple Inc.

2 – Names and functions of parts

•

Audio input through the AUX IN jack can only be output as analog audio. It cannot be output as digital audio.

•

During CD playback, digital output is possible when the pitch control function is on, but the sampling frequency will be changed in proportion to the pitch control value. For this reason, when the pitch control function is on, some devices might not be able to properly receive audio from the digital outputs of this unit.

Making connections

Examples of connections that can be made with a CD-200iL are shown below.

Precautions before making connections

•

Before connecting other devices, read their operation manuals carefully and connect them properly.

•

Turn the power OFF or set the power to standby for this unit and all units to be connected to it.

•

Set up all the units so that they are powered from the same line. When using a power strip, for example, use a thick cable with a high current capacity to reduce fluctuation of the power voltage.

During data CD playback, the sampling frequency of this unit’s digital output is converted to 44.1 kHz before output regardless of the sampling frequency of the playback file.

•

This unit cannot convert analog audio input through the

AUX IN jack into digital audio and output it.

•

If the pitch control function is on during CD playback, the sampling frequency of the digital audio output signal is changed by an amount equivalent to the pitch control value. In this case, some devices might not be able to accept digital audio signals output from this unit.

Connecting an iPod or iPhone

This unit can control an iPod or iPhone and output its audio when it is connected to the iPod dock on the front. This unit can also recharge the iPod or iPhone.

CAUTION

•

When an iPod or iPhone is inserted into this unit’s iPod dock, the top of the iPod or iPhone is higher than the top of the unit. Leave 2U or more space open about the unit to prevent interference with devices installed above it.

•

An iPod or iPhone without a Lightning or Dock connector cannot be connected to the dock. (See “Connecting external audio players” on page 16.)

•

Always remove any case from an iPod or iPhone before connecting it. Connecting with a case on might prevent complete connection and proper operation and playback.

•

Always use a dock adapter that is suitable for the iPod or iPhone that you are using. The use of an unsuitable adapter could damage the connectors of both devices.

•

iPod models that do not support USB mode will not be recharged when connected to this unit. They will also not respond to pressing the PLAY/PAUSE button on this unit. When playback operations are conducted from the iPod itself, analog audio will be output from this unit.

•

Do not connect an iPod or iPhone to this unit using a Lightning to 30-pin Adapter. If you do so, the playback sound might not be output and iPod or iPhone control and recharging might not be possible.

NOTE

•

When an iPod or iPhone is connected to this unit’s iPod dock, it will be recharged whenever this unit’s power is ON. When the iPod or iPhone is completely charged, the unit stops charging. When the unit’s power is OFF, it does not charge the connected iPod or iPhone. During charging, a battery icon appears on the iPod or iPhone screen that shows the charging status. Please see the operation manual for the iPod or iPhone that you are using for details.

•

If one iPod/iPhone is connected to the Lightning connector and another is connected to the 30-pin Dock connector, the one that was connected last can be controlled and recharged. The iPod or iPhone that was connected earlier cannot be controlled or recharged. If this unit, the iPod/ iPhone connected to the Lightning connector and the iPod/iPhone connected to the 30-pin Dock connector are all off, when this unit is turned on again, the iPod/iPhone connected to the Lightning connector will be the one that can be controlled and recharged.

•

When closing the iPod dock, always pull the unlocking lever on the top of the iPod dock to unlock it when pressing PUSH OPEN on the front of the dock.

Removing a dock adapter

As shown in the illustration below, insert a flathead screwdriver into the hole in the dock adapter and then use the driver to remove the adapter.

When removing the dock adapter, use a hand to hold the iPod dock in place.

Removing the iPod or iPhone

•

Before connecting or disconnecting an iPod or iPhone, set the current source to turn this unit off.

•

In order to avoid applying excessive force when connecting or disconnecting an iPod or iPhone, align it with the Dock connector and proceed gently. Refer to the illustration below.

Connecting external audio players

By connecting the analog output (line out or headphones jack) of another type of audio player or an iPod/iPhone that does not have a Lightning or Dock connector to the AUX IN jack on the front of this unit, you can output sound from these audio players through the output jacks of this unit. Since the AUX IN jack does not have an input level adjustment, adjust the output level from the connected device.

CAUTION

•

Minimize the volume of an external device before connecting it to the AUX IN. Failure to do so could cause a sudden burst of loud noise, which might result in hearing damage, for example.

•

Before connecting or disconnecting with the AUX IN jack, set the current source to turn this unit off.

Preparing the remote control

Inserting batteries

1. Open the lid.

2. Confirm ¥/^ polarity, and insert two AA batteries.

3. Close the lid.

Replacing the batteries

Replace both batteries with new ones when the range of the remote control becomes short or if the function buttons become unresponsive.

Cautions about the use of batteries

Misuse of batteries could cause them to leak, rupture or otherwise be damaged. Please read and abide by the precautions on them when using batteries. Also see “CAUTIONS ABOUT BATTERIES” on page 4.

Cautions about using the remote control

•

Use of this remote control could cause other devices that can be controlled by infrared rays to be operated accidentally.

•

Use the remote control within the following range.

Loading a CD

To load a CD, press the OPEN/CLOSE button on the main unit or on the remote control to open the disc tray, and put the CD into the tray with the label facing up.

Press the OPEN/CLOSE button again to close the disc tray. After loading the disc, the unit reads the disc’s information and the display shows the total number of tracks and total playback time if it is an audio CD or the total number of tracks in the current folder or on the entire disc if it is a data CD.

NOTE

•

When the current source is the tray, instead of pressing the OPEN/CLOSE button to close the disc tray, you can press the PLAY/PAUSE button to close the disc tray and begin playback automatically after it closes.

•

If you open the disc tray while this unit is in use, the following settings are lost.

4 – CD playback

In this chapter, we explain playback functions that can be used with tracks on CDs.

The following explanations assume that a CD that contains audio files/tracks has been loaded in this unit, the power is ON and the “Selecting the output source (current source)” on page 18.)

Playable discs and files

This unit can play back the following types of discs and files.

CD-DA (audio CD) format discs

Music CDs that are commercially available and CD-R and CD-RW discs that have been recorded as audio CD format can be played. In this manual, these types of discs are called “audio CDs.”

Data CDs

This unit can play back CD-ROM/R/RW discs with MP3, MP2 and WAV files in ISO 9660 Level 1, Level 2 and Joliet formats. In this manual, these types of discs are called, “data CDs.”

NOTE

•

This unit cannot read CD-R/RW discs that have not been finalized.

•

For details about playable sampling frequencies and bit rates, see “Playback file formats” on page 30.

•

During data CD playback, the sampling frequency of this unit’s digital output is always 44.1 kHz regardless of the playback file sampling frequency. Digital output is possible when pitch control is ON, but the sampling frequency is altered in proportion to the pitch control value. When the pitch control function is ON, therefore, some equipment might not be able to receive the digital output of this unit.

•

This unit’s display can only show single-byte characters (alphabet and numbers). File with names that use Japanese, Chinese or other double-byte characters can be played back, but those characters will be shown as _ on the display.

•

This unit identifies MP3 and MP2 files by their “.mp3” and “.mp2” file extensions. This unit cannot play MP3/MP2 files that do not have the correct “.mp3” and “.mp2” file extension, so always include these file extensions at the ends of MP3/MP2 file names. This unit cannot play files that are not in the MP3/MP2 data format even if they have an “.mp3” and “.mp2” file extension.

•

The unit identifies WAV files with the “.wav” file extension. This unit cannot play WAV files that do not have the “.wav” file extension, so always include the “.wav” file extension at the end of the name of an WAV file. The unit cannot play files that are not in the WAV data format even if they have the “.wav” file extension.

•

Data CDs with more than 999 files or 512 folders might not play correctly.

•

Depending on disc conditions, this unit might not be able to play some discs, or skips in the sound might occur.

Folders and tracks on data CDs

This unit treats all the audio files on data CDs as “tracks”. Some data CDs store files inside folders in the same way that computers usually do. In addition, multiple folders can be stored inside another folder creating a multilevel structure. (The maximum number of folder levels is 16.)

You can use this unit’s folder search function to look for audio files among multiple folders. Searching starts from high-level folders and then moves to lower-level subfolders.

If there are audio files in the root directory of a data CD, this root directory is also treated as a folder.

Folders that do not directly contain audio files will be ignored when searching folders. For example, folders C and D in the illustration below would be ignored when searching folders.

4 – CD playback

Playback modes

This unit can play back tracks using the following three playback modes.

Continuous playback mode (default setting)

Tracks on the CD are played back in numerical order.

NOTE

When the folder playback function is on with a data CD, the tracks in the current playback folder are played back in numerical order.(See “Folder playback (data CDs)” on page

21.)

Shuffle playback mode

The tracks on the CD are played back in random order regardless of their track numbers. Playback stops after all tracks have been played once.

NOTE

When the folder playback function is on with a data CD, the tracks in the current playback folder are played back randomly.(See “Folder playback (data CDs)” on page 21.)

Programmed playback mode

Tracks on the CD are played back in the programmed order. (See “Programmed playback” on page 22.)

NOTE

When the folder playback function is on with a data CD, the tracks in the current playback folder can be added to the program.(See “Folder playback (data CDs)” on page 21.)

Selecting the playback mode

Press the main unit PLAY MODE/INTRO CHECK [SOURCE SEL] button or the remote PLAY MODE button to cycle through the playback modes. During playback, however, only continuous and shuffle playback modes can be selected.

To select programmed playback, press the main unit PLAY

In this manual, unless stated otherwise, explanations are given assuming that the playback mode is continuous.(See “Playback modes” on left column.)

4 – CD playback

Selecting a track

There are two ways to select a track. You can move (skip) to the previous or next track, or you can select a track directly by its track number.

Skipping to the next or previous track

Use the main unit SEARCH m/, [.//] buttons or the remote search (m/. and //,) buttons to skip to tracks.

Search forward and backward

You can search forward and backward in a track while listening to it.

1. Play or pause the desired track.

2. Press and hold a SEARCH m/, [.//] button on the main unit or a search (m/. or //,) button on the remote control to start searching forward or backward.

3. Release the button that you are holding to stop searching and return the unit to the state it was in before searching (playback or pause).

NOTE

Searching forward and backward is possible with data CDs.

Folder playback (data CDs)

When playing a data CD and the folder playback function is on, the folder number is shown in the folder number area on the display, and the set folder (current folder) can be used as the playback area.

Follow the procedures below to set the playback folder.

When the folder playback function is off, the folder number area of the display. In this case, the entire data CD will be used as the playback area.

Selecting by track number

Use the number (0–9) buttons on the remote control to directly select tracks for playback.

Track numbers can have up to two digits for audio CDs and up to three digits for data CDs.

1. Use the number (0–9) buttons on the remote control to input the track number. Enter the track number starting from the largest digit.

To select track 1:

Press the 1 button one time.

To select track 12:

Press the 1 button followed by the 2 button.

2. Press the PLAY/PAUSE button on the main unit or the remote control. The selected track begins to play.

If you press the STOP button on the main unit or the remote control, the display stops showing the track number input and the display returns to its previous state.

NOTE

The number (0-9) buttons cannot be used to select a track when in program or shuffle playback mode.

Setting the playback folder

1. Press a main unit FOLDER g/t [PITCH –/+] button or remote control FOLDER g/t button to show the folder number in the folder number area on the display and turn the folder playback function on.

2. Use the main unit FOLDER g/t [PITCH –/+] buttons or remote control FOLDER g/t buttons to select the playback folder.

After selecting the playback folder, the transport will move to beginning of the first track in that folder.

NOTE

•

Continue pressing a main unit FOLDER g/t [PITCH –/+] button or remote control FOLDER g/t button to change folders in order. When you change to a different folder, it becomes the current folder.

•

When the folder playback function is on, using REPEAT ALL plays back all tracks inside the current folder repeatedly.

•

4 – CD playback

Programmed playback

To use programmed playback, you must set a program either before or after setting the playback mode to programmed playback mode. (See “Selecting the playback mode” on page

20.) When in programmed playback mode, press the PLAY/PAUSE

button on the main unit or the remote control to start playback of the set program in order from the first track (program step

01). Press a main unit SEARCH m/, [.//] button or

remote control search (m/. or ,//) button to skip to the previous or next program step.

When in programmed playback mode and playback of an audio CD is stopped, the total number of tracks in the program and the total program time are shown.

When using a data CD, only the program number is shown.

NOTE

To select programmed playback, when stopped or when a CD is not loaded, press the main unit PLAY MODE/INTRO

CHECK [SOURCE SEL] button or the remote control PLAY MODE button.

When the folder playback function is on for a data CD, tracks in the current folder can be added to the program.

Setting the program

When no program is set, follow the procedures below to set a program using the remote control.

The program cannot be set from the main unit.

You can set a program at any time regardless of the current playback mode.

CD programs are cleared when the disc tray is opened or the current folder is changed.

You can check the contents of the program.

1. Press the PROGRAM EDIT button on the remote control while playback is stopped to put the unit into program setting mode.

Replacing a program track

You can replace a track that has already been added to the program.

1. Press the PROGRAM EDIT button on the remote control while playback is stopped to put the unit into program mode.

2. Follow the steps in “Checking the program” above and press the PROGRAM EDIT button to show the program step with the track that you want to replace.

3. Use the remote number (0–9) buttons or skip (m/. and //,) buttons to select the desired track and press the PROGRAM EDIT button.

After replacing a track, the display shows the empty step at the end of the program and you can add another track to the end of the program if desired.

Time and text information display

You can set what type of time and text information is shown on the display.

Press the DISPLAY [SHIFT] button on the main unit or the DISPLAY button on the remote control to show for two seconds the type of information (playback time or text information) that is currently set to appear in the main area of the display. Press this button again while this is being shown to change the type of information displayed.

When changing, the types of information that can be displayed differ depending on the type of disc loaded, its status and the operation state of this unit.

After pressing the DISPLAY [SHIFT] button on the main unit or the DISPLAY button on the remote control, the currently selected type of information to be shown on the main display appears for two seconds as follows.

Pitch control playback

With pitch control playback, this unit can alter the pitch (sound frequency and playback speed) of CDs during playback.

Follow the procedures below to use pitch control playback.

1. Press the REPEAT [PITCH ON/OFF] button while pressing and holding the DISPLAY [SHIFT] button on the main unit or press the PITCH button on the remote control to turn pitch control ON.

Intro check function

The intro check function can be used to automatically play back the first 10 seconds of every track on a CD one after another.

During playback or when stopped, press and hold the main unit PLAY MODE/INTRO CHECK [SOURCE SEL] button or the remote control INTRO CHECK button to start intro check playback. The this function is active.

When the pitch control function is on, digital output is possible, but the sampling frequency will be changed by an amount equivalent to the pitch control value. When the pitch control function is on, some devices might not be able to receive this unit’s digital output.

•

The pitch control function cannot be used with an iPod or iPhone.

•

5 − iPod/iPhone Playback

When an iPod or iPhone is connected to the iPod dock on the front of this unit, this unit can output the iPod or iPhone’s sound and control it. Moreover, when this unit is on, it can also recharge the iPod or iPhone. (See “Connecting an iPod or iPhone” on page 14.)

Connect an iPod or iPhone following the instructions in “Connecting an iPod or iPhone” on page 14.

Always insert a dock adapter suitable for your iPod or iPhone into the connector. Dock adapters are not included with this product. Use the dock adapter included with your iPod or iPhone or a commercially-available Apple Universal Dock Adapter made by Apple Inc.

Read the instructions in “Connecting an iPod or iPhone” on page 14 carefully and proceed with caution when connecting and disconnecting an iPod or iPhone in order to avoid damage to the connectors and sudden loud noises .

Depending on the operation of the unit, the following messages will appear in the main display area.

7 – Troubleshooting

If you have problems with your system, look through this chart and see if you can solve the problem yourself before calling the nearest retailer or TASCAM representative.

No power

e Is the unit’s power plug completely inserted into a working

power outlet?

e Is the iPod or iPhone connected correctly with the unit’s

dock connector?

e Is the unit’s power plug completely inserted into a working
