DESIGNING YOUR OWN DRAFT CHARACTERS
Designingand printingyourown charactershas two requirements:first,
designingtheshapeofthecharacter,calculatingthedatanecessarytomake
the shape,and sendingthat datato the printer,and secondly,sendingthe
commandtoprintthedownloadedcharactersinsteadoftheregular charac-
ters. There are a numberof designconstraintsfordownloaddraft quality

tolettheprintheadprintdotson the secondpassthatoverlaptheprevious
dots,inotier tofillin thespaces andproducedensercharacters.Additionally,tie printhead speedis halved,and the dotsareprintedat doublethe
densityofdraftcharacters.Forthisreason,NLQcharacterscancontainup
to 23dotsin the horizontaldirection.
Fundamentally,theprocessto defineandprintdownloadedNLQcharacter
is the sameasfordraftcharactem,exceptthatyoumustsupplyaboutfour
timesasmuchcharacterdata,andyoumustdesignthecharacterwiththe?SVO
passes of the print head in mind. There are small diffextmceswith the
standardmodein the way the attributeinformationis processedalso.
Inthe draftqualitymodethe attributebytecarriesthedescenderdata,and
specifiestheleftspace andthecharacterwidth.IntheNLQmode,thefirst
bit also carries the descender data, and the next three bits describethe
character’sleft space as with the draft charactem,but the last four bits
describetherightspace.Appropriateallocationof datain thesesevenbits
lets you place the character whe~ you like within the grid, with the
nxtrictionthatthe charactermustbeatleast9 dotswide.
UsethegridinFigure5-4tohelpplotthedata.Duetothetwo-passprocess,
NLQcharacterscancontainupto 16dotsvertically.ml tom23arethedata
forthefirstpass,andm24tom46are thedatafor the secondpass.
Tomakethecharacterdataeasiertocalculate,putthefirstpassdots inside
theboxesonthegridwhenyouaredesigningyourcharacters,andthe second
passdotsonthelines. Rememberthat adjacentdotsmaynotoverlaponthe
samepass;inotherwords,ifone dotisinabox,itsadjacentdotonthesame
passmaynotbeonaline.l%erefom,tomakesmoothcharactm, putthedots

The definingprocessisthesameasfordraftcharacters,exceptthatyoumust
selectNLQmode,andyoumustdefine46 data.If youwishto printyour
NLQ characterswith the regularcharacterset, theremarksregardingthe

INSTALLING APPLICATION SOFTWARE WITH
YOUR PRINTER
Wheninstallingapplicationsoftware,youmayfindthatyourprinteris not
specificallymentionedin thelistsof printersgivenfor installation.How-
ever, this should pose no problem. Read this section, and guidelines
providedwithyoursoftwareon printerinstallation.
Ifyouhaveyourprintersetup in standardmode,then chooseanEpsonLX-

ProprinterIII, simplychoosethis fromthelist of printersavailablein the

PROGRAMMING THE PRINTER WITH DOS

If yoursystemincludesthe filePRINT.COMyoucan use themain DOS
printingcommand.SimplytypethewordPRINTfollowedby thenameof
the file you want to print. To print a fde named README.DOC,for
