Features
High S/N Ratio
A 24-bit A/D converter with a dynamic range of over 113 dB and a 20-bit D/A converter with a signal-to-noise ratio of over 118 dB are housed in this unit. High performance results from its compact device geometry.
External Sync Terminal
The unit has an external WORD SYNC input terminal (BNC connector), as well as an AES/EBU sync input to the digital input, which makes it ideal for use in many diverse working environments. The supported sampling frequencies are 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz.
Digital Output Selectable from among Three Word Lengths
A switch selects the word length of digital output from 24 bits, 20 bits, or 16 bits.
Internal Sampling Rate Converter
An internal sampling rate converter in the D/A conversion excludes jitter from digital input, and makes it possible to accept word lengths of up to 24 bits.
I/O Signal Level Meter
The unit comes with a 20-segment high-precision peakhold level meter. An A/D or D/A signal level is alternatively indicated.
Provided with Two Kinds of Digital I/O
Compatible with both AES/EBU and S/P DIF digital I/O, the unit demonstrates its performance in a broad repertoire of applications, including analog I/O for editing on Macintosh/Windows

Precautions
Notice for the Customers in the United Kingdom
IMPORTANT
The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code:
Blue: Neutral
Brown: Live As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this apparatus may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows: The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter N or coloured black. The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter L or coloured red. Do not connect either wire to the earth terminal in the plug which is marked by the letter E or by the safety earth symbol Y or coloured green or green-and-yellow.
On safety
Should any liquid or solid object fall into the cabinet,
unplug the unit and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
Unplug the unit from the wall outlet if it is not to be
used for an extended period of time. To disconnect the cord, pull it out by grasping the plug. Never pull the cord itself.
On installation
Do not install the unit in a location near heat sources
such as radiators or air ducts, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, mechanical vibration or shock.
On operation
Before making program source connections, be sure to
turn the power switch off and unplug the unit.
When the unit is not used, turn the power off to
conserve energy and to extend the useful life of your unit.
On cleaning the cabinet
Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth lightly moistened with mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, scouring powder or solvent such as alcohol or benzine.
On repacking
Do not throw away the carton and the packing material. It makes an ideal container to transport the unit in. When shipping the unit for repair work or to another location, repack it as it was.
Warning/Precautions
On operating voltage
This model is operable from both line voltages of 120 V and 230 V and is internally switched automatically to meet the line voltage whichever is available. In a 120 V AC zone, use the supplied plug adaptor with the power cord. If a plug of any other kind is required, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.
If you have any questions or problems concerning your unit, please contact your nearest Sony dealer.

2 A/D INPUT LEVEL controls
Adjust the level of analog signal input to the A/D converter. The control has a variable range of 30 dB, representing a digital full scale (0 dBFS) at an analog input level of +24 dBu when it is fully turned counterclockwise, +14 dBu when set at the center position, and –6 dBu when fully turned clockwise. (Graduation of the control excludes a head room of 20 dB.) A 31-point click level control assures enhanced reproducibility with any analog input level setting.

3 Level meter and OVER indicator
The level meter indicates a level of A/D or D/A selected with METER selection switch 4. Metered indications are given in dBFS. 0 dBFS corresponds to a digital full scale. If the digital full scale lasts for three words or more, the OVER indicator will light in red.

7 DIGITAL INPUT and input selection switch
The central switch selects between AES/EBU input for pro use and IEC958 input (commonly known as “S/P DIF”). A sampling rate converter not only eliminates jitters that are harmful to sound quality from digital input but also supports sampling frequencies from 32 kHz to 48 kHz and word lengths from 16 bits to 24 bits automatically.
Note
AES/EBU input and IEC958 input cannot be mixed together.

8 ANALOG OUTPUT
Analog output from the D/A converter (equivalent to XLR3-32), with pin 2 being hot. When the level meter reads 0 dBFS, analog output is yielded at an analog level of +24 dBu. The output level can be varied to the average output level (+8 dBu/FS) of a CD player by setting an internal jumper connector. If you want the output level changed, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.
WARNING!
Have this setting carried out by a Sony service person. To avoid electrical shock hazards that could result in physical injury or death, never open the cover.
9 ANALOG INPUT
Analog input to the D/A converter (equivalent to XLR3-31) at a maximum input level ranging from –6 dBu to +24 dBu.
Note
Not to connect a microphone or musical instrument directly to this unit, but to use a mixer or compressor/limiter to adjust and compress their input before submitting it to the A/D converter.

Trouble-shooting guide
Trouble-shooting guide
In the event of any unexpected problems, please read this manual thoroughly and check the following points before calling for repairs. If after that, normal operation cannot be resumed, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
Condition
Synchronizing the digital input (DIGITAL INPUT) puts certain sources out of sync.
External synchronization from WORD SYNC input (BNC) does not work.
The D/A output level is too high.
Causes / Solutions
A digital signal that has been subjected to a pitch control
that alters the sampling frequency has been supplied. (This unit does not support a pitch control that alters the sampling frequency.)
An unsupported sampling frequency has been supplied.
A sync signal with a sampling frequency other than
48 kHz and 44.1 kHz has been supplied. (This unit does not support sampling frequencies, such as 32 kHz.)
This unit has a D/A output level of +24 dBu in relation
to 0 dBFS. See 8 on page 5.
