Applyi ng Ergonomics
Your computer is a portable device and ca n be used in a va riety of envir onments. Whenever possible, you should apply the following er gonomic consi derations for both station ary and portable environments.
Position of your computer — Place the comput er directl y in fron t of you as
you work. Keep your forearms horizontal, with your wris ts in a neutral, comfortable position while using the keyboard, touch pad, or external mouse. Let your upper ar ms hang natu rally at your sides . Take brea ks during sessions with your computer. Excessive use of the computer may strain muscles or tendons.
Furniture and posture — Sit in a chair with good back support and
armrests. Adjus t the level of the chair so your feet ar e fla t on the floor. A footrest may make you more comfortable. Sit in a relaxe d, upright posture and avoid slouching forward or leaning far backward.
Viewing angle of the computer’s display — Use the display’s tilting
feature to find the best viewing angle. Also try adjusting the brightness setting of the display. Following these suggestions can reduce eye strain and muscle fatigue.
Lighting — Choos e a locati on where windo ws and lights do not create gla re
and reflection on the display. Use indirect lighting to avoid bright spots on the display. You can also purchase accessories for your display that help reduce glare. Proper lighting adds to your comfort and work effectiveness.
Placement of an external display — When using an external displ ay, set
the display at a comfortable viewing distance. Make sure the display screen is at eye level or slightly lower when you are sitting in front of the monitor.

Connecting the Docking Station
You can conne ct the docking station to the computer while the computer is on or off. Connecting the computer while it is in power s aving mode (Standby or Hibernate) may result in data loss or a computer mal function.
1 Disconnect t he VGA, USB, AC , and Ether net de vices from you r c omputer t o
avoid damaging them.
2 Install th e batt ery i f it is not alrea dy inst alle d. If you in stall a char ged bat tery,
you can connect the doc king station while the com puter is on.
3 Plug one en d of the AC adapter cab le into the DC I N port on the do ck ing
station, and plug the other end into an AC outlet. The Power indicator turns on.

To use your co mputer immediately , use the supplied AC ad apter as a p o w er source. Your s upplied battery is not charged when you unpack it, however, you can begin charging it when you use your AC adapter. Setting Up A Dial-Up Connection
This sectio n describes the basic step s for setting up your dial-up conne ction to the Internet. The Connection Wizard guides you through the process of connecting to the Internet and choosing an Internet Ser vice Provider (ISP) or setting up an ex isting account.
To set up a dial-up connection (Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system )
1 Connect a telephone cable to your computer. See “To conne ct a telephone

You may not need to reinstall the entire contents of your hard disk. To reinstall all the software titles that shipped with your computer, use the System Recovery CD(s). See “Using the System Recovery CD(s)” for more information.

1 Turn on your computer . If your computer is already on, close all open
programs.
2 Logon to the Microsoft® Windows® deskt op. 3 Insert Sony Application Recovery CD No. 1 into your computer’s optica l
drive. The Application Recovery utility loads automatically.
4 Click OK in the VAIO welcome window. The Sony Application Recovery
Program window appe ars . 5 Doubl e- click th e Software folder icon. 6 Double-clic k the application you want to restore, and then follow the on-
screen instructions to complete the recovery process.
Your system may include one or more Application Recovery CDs. If you h ave more
than one Appl ication Rec overy CD, insert the first CD to run the Application
Recovery program. You may be prompted to insert the next CD, depending on the
application you wish to restore.
To reins tall device drivers with th e Application Recovery CD(s)
1 Logon to the Microsoft® Windows® deskt op. 2 Insert Application Recovery CD No. 1 into your comput er’s optical drive. 3 Click Start on the Windows® taskbar, and right-click My Computer. 4 Click Properties. The System Properties dialog box appears. 5 Click the Hardware tab, and click Device Manager. 6 Right-click the unknown device or the device that requires the driver
installation, and click Update Driver fro m the sho r tcut menu.
The unknown devices(s) is identified by a yellow question mark. A device that has a
driver problem is identified by a yellow exclamation point.
7 In the Hardware Update Wizard, click to select In st all from a list or
specific location (Advan ced). 8 Click Next.

13 Click the folder name of the device in which you want to reinstall, and click

operating system automatically reinstalls the device driver(s) from the Application Recovery CD.
15 Click Finish, and remove the Application Recovery CD from the optical
drive.
16 Turn off your computer by clicking Start, and then Turn off computer. 17 Wait 30 seconds, and turn on your computer.
Your syste m includes one or more Applicat ion Recovery CDs. Insert Application
Recovery CD No. 1 to star t the application or driver recovery process. You are prompted to insert the next CD(s), depending on the application or driver you want to restore.

Using the System R ecovery C D (s)
The System Recovery CD(s) enabl es you to form at your hard disk and restores all original software programs. Your computer is returned to the original factory settings.
The System Recovery process removes all software t hat you may have installed since you started using your computer. Reinstall any software programs th at were not included with the compute r when you purchased it.

You can use the Syste m Re cove ry CD(s) to reinstall the operat ing system and software titles that shipped with your computer if they become corrupted or are erased. You may not need to reinstall the entire contents of your hard drive. If you experience a problem with your computer, reinstalling an individual devic e driver or software title may correct the problem. Use the Application Recovery CD(s) to reinstall individua l progra ms and to reinsta ll device drivers . See “Using the Application Recovery CD(s)” for more information.
The System Recovery CD(s) contains a backup copy of all the software originally installed on your hard disk. It ca n be used only to re cover the hard disk of the computer you purchased.
System Recovery options
Default System Drive Recovery — All data on Drive C is deleted. The
factory default s ettings and software progr ams are restored on this drive
only.
Change Partition Size — All partitions, custom installations, and changes
are removed from the hard drive. You can set the partition sizes for both the
Drive C and Drive D. The original, preinstalled operat ing system and
software program s are rest ored .
Recovery to Original Factory Defaults — All data and partitions are
removed from the hard drive. All origina l factor y settings , operat ing system,
and preinstalled software are restored.
The System Recovery utility does not back up your system ’s data. If you wish to retain your system data, perform a backup to an external media.
To use the S yst em Recovery CD( s)
Your system may take a few minutes to load necessary files. A blue screen may appear during the downloading process.
1 Insert the Sony System Recovery CD in the optical drive. The fi r st CD must
be in the drive befor e you restart your computer.
2 Turn off your computer by clicking Start, and then Turn off computer. 3 Wait 30 seconds, and turn on your computer. The System Recovery utility
restarts from the optical drive.

The BIOS Setup Utility appears.
3 Press the right arrow key to select the Exit menu. 4 Press the down arrow key to select Get Default Va lues, and p res s Enter.
The Setup Confirmation window appears. 5 Press Enter again to select Yes. 6 Make sure Exit (Save Changes) is selected, and then press Enter. The
Setup Confirmation window appears again. 7 Make sure Yes is selected, and press Enter. The computer restarts from the
Recovery CD.
Your system may include one o r m ore System Recovery CDs. If you have more than
one Syste m Re covery CDs, insert the f irst CD to run t he System Recovery program .
You are prompte d to inser t t he seco nd CD onc e t he info rmat i on from the f irst CD has
been installed.
The recove ry process takes from 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

Storing Your Computer
Do not place your computer in a location subjec t to:
Heat sources, such as radiators or air ducts
Direct sunli ght
Excessive d us t
Moisture or rain
Mechanical vibra tion or shock
Strong magnets or speakers that are not magnetically shielded
Ambient temperature of more than 95ºF (35ºC) or less tha n 40ºF (5ºC)
High hu midi ty Do not place electronic equipment near your computer. The computer’s
electromagnetic field may cause a malf unction.
Provide adequate air circulation to prevent internal heat buildup. Do not
place your computer on porous surfaces such as rugs or blankets , or ne ar
materials suc h as curtains or draperies that m ay block its ventilation slots.
Leave a space of at least 8 inches (20 cm) behind the back panel of the
computer.
If the computer is broug ht directly from a cold locat ion to a warm one,
moisture may condense insi de your comput er. In this case, allow at leas t one
hour before turning on your computer. If any problems occur, unplug your
computer, and contact your Sony Service Center.
The computer uses high-frequency radio signals and may interfere with
radio or TV reception. Should this occur, relocate the computer a suitable
distance away from the set.
Do not drop the computer or place heavy objects on top of the computer.
Using C ables and Connections
Use only specified peripheral equipment and interface cables; otherwise,
pro blems may result .
Do not use cut or damaged connection cables. If the telephone company makes a service call to your home or office and
determines that your computer is responsible for a problem, the telephone
company may bill you for the service call. Also, if you do not disconnect

your computer when it is adversely affecting the telephone line, the telephone company has the right to disconnect your service until you correct the problem.
Cleaning Your Computer
Clean the computer with a soft, dry cloth or a soft cloth lightly moistened
with a mild deter gent soluti on. Do not use any type of abrasive pad, s couring powder , or solvent such as alcohol or benzine, as these may da ma ge the finish of your computer.
If a soli d o b ject fal l s onto the com pu ter or a liq u id leaks i n to the computer,
immediately turn off and unplug the computer. It is bes t to have the computer checked by qualified personnel be fore you use it again.
A vo id rubbing the LCD screen as this can damage the screen. Use a soft, dry
cloth to wipe the LCD screen.
Always disconne ct the power cord before cleaning the com puter.
Handling the LCD Screen
Do not leave the LCD facing the sun as it can damage the LCD. Be careful
when using the comput er near a window .
Do not scratch the LCD or exert pres s ure on it. This could cause a
malfunction.
Using the computer in low temperature conditions may produce a residual
image on t he scr een . T his i s no t a mal fun cti o n. W hen the co mpu ter ret ur ns t o normal temperature, the screen return s to normal.
The screen becomes warm during operation. This is normal and does not
indicate a mal f unction.
The LCD is manufactured using high-precision technology. You may,
however, see tiny black point s and/or bright points (red, blue, or green) that continuousl y appear on the LCD. This is a normal result of the manufacturing process and does not indica te a malfunction.

Troubleshooting Your Computer
Why doesn’t my computer start?
Make sure the computer is sec urely plugged into a power source and is
turned on. Make sure the power indicator shows the power is on. See
“Connecting a Power Source” for more information.
Make sure the battery is inserted proper ly and is charged. If you are connected to a docking station with a floppy disk drive or an
external flopp y disk drive, make sure the floppy disk drive is empty.
If the computer is plu gged into a power strip or Uninterruptible Power
Supply (UPS), make sure the power st rip or UPS is turned on and working.
If you are using an external display , make sure it is plugged into a power
source and turned on. Make sure the brightness and contrast controls are
adjusted correc tly. See the manual that came with your display for details.
Remove the batt ery from the com puter, unplu g the powe r cord, a nd pl ug it in
again. Turn on the power.
If the power control button does not function, remove the AC adapter and
battery. Wait one minute, and then reattach them before pre ssing the power
button.
Condensation ma y cause the computer to malfu nction. If this occur s, do no t
use the computer for at least one hour.
Unplug the power cord, press the reset button by using a thin, strai ght object
(such as a paper clip), r emove the battery, plug it in again, and turn on the
power.
Why does a BIOS error appea r when my comp uter starts?
If the message “Press <F1> to resume, <F2> to setup” appears at the bottom of the screen. Follow these steps:
1 Press F2. The BIOS Set up menu appears. 2 Set the date (month/day/year). Press Enter. 3 Press the Down Arrow key to select System Time, and then set the time
(hour: minute: second). Press Enter.

4 Press the Right Arrow key to select the Exit tab, and then press the
Down Arrow key to select Get Default Values. The message Load
default values for all SETUP items appears. 5 Press Enter. The Setup Confirmation window appears. 6 Select Yes, and press Enter. 7 Select Exit (Save Changes), and pres s Enter. The Setup Confirmation
window appears again. 8 Select Yes, and press Enter. The computer r est ar t s.
If this occu rs on a regular basis, contact Sony Computing Support
(http://www.sony.com/pcsupport).
Why does the message “Operating system not found” appear when my computer starts, and why won’t Windows start?
If you have connected a docking station with a flop py dis k drive or an
external flo ppy disk drive, m ake sure t here is no disk i n the flopp y disk dri ve
(non-bootable).
If a non-bootable fl oppy disk is in the drive, proce ed as follows:
1 Turn off the computer, and remove the floppy disk.
2 Restart the com puter and confirm that the Windows® operating system
starts properl y.
If Windows still does not start, follow these steps to initialize th e BIOS :
1 Remove any floppy disk from the floppy disk drive.
2 Turn off the computer.
3 Remove any periphe ral devices connected to the com puter.
4 Restart the computer.
5 Press F2 whe n the Sony logo appears. The BIOS Setup window
appears.
6 Press the Right Arrow key to select the Exit menu.
7 Press the Down Arrow key to select Get Default Va lues. The
message Load default values for all SETUP items appears.

8 Press Enter. The Setup Confirmation window appears. 9 Select Yes, and press Enter. 10 Select Exit (Save Changes), and press Enter. The Setup Confirmation

The System Recovery CD restores your computer to its original state, so user data and applications will be lost.
Why does my computer stop responding or won’t turn off?
It is best to turn of f your comput er usin g the Tu rn Off Computer command on t he Windows Start menu. Using other methods, including those listed below, may result in loss of unsaved data.
(Windows XP) Click Start on the Windows® taskbar, se lect Turn Off
Computer, and then click Turn Off. (Windows 2000) Click Start on the Windows® taskbar, and select Shut Down. When the Shut Down Windows window appears, make sure Shut down is selected, and click OK.
If your computer does not turn off, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete simultaneously.
(Windows XP) When the Windows Task Manager dialog box appears, click Turn Off from the Shut Down menu. (Windows 2000) When the Windows Security dialog box appea r s, click Shut Down, and select Shut down again from the Shut Down Windows window.
If your computer still does not turn off, pres s and hold the power button for
at least four seconds to turn of f the power.
Unplug the computer from the AC adapter, and remove the battery from
your computer.
If your computer stops responding while playing a CD or DVD, press
Ctrl+Alt+Delete simultaneously. You can turn off the computer from the Shut Down menu.

Pressing th e Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys simultaneously or turning off the computer with
the power button may result in data loss in files that are currently open.
Why won’t the power management respond?
Your computer’s operating system may become unstable if a lower power state, such as Hibernate, is initiated and changed before the computer completely enters the lower po wer state.
To restore the computer to its normal operating s tability
1 Close all open programs. 2 Restar t th e computer. Follow these steps:
1 Press the Windows key .
2 Press U. The Turn off computer window opens.
3 Press R to select restart.
4 (Windows 2000) Press Enter. 3 If the computer does not restart,
1 (Windo ws XP) Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete simultan e ously. The Windows
Task Manager window appears. (Windo ws 2000) Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete simu ltane ously. The Windows Security dialog box appears.
2 (Windo ws XP) Press Alt to highlight the menu bar, and pres s t he Right
Arrow key to select Shut Down.
(Windows 2000) Press the Right Arrow key to select Shut Down. 3 Press Enter. 4 Press R to select restart. 5 (Windows 2000) Press Enter.
4 If this procedure does not work, press and hold the power button for four
seconds or longer to turn off the computer.

Why did the computer (LCD) screen go blank?
Your computer screen may go blank if the computer has los t power or is in a
power saving mode (St andby or Hibernate).
Make sure the comput er is pl ugged in to a power s ource and is t urned on.
The power indicator on the computer will be on if the computer is on.
Make sure the battery is inserted proper ly and is charged. If the computer is in LCD (Video) St andby mode, press any key to
activate the computer screen.
If the display mod e is set to ext ernal displa y (suc h as TV), press and hold t he
Fn key while you press F7 several times.
Troubleshooting the Mouse and Touc h Pad
Why doesn’t the mouse work properly?
If you are using a Sony USB mouse, make sure the mouse is securely
plugged into the USB port.
If you are using an external mouse, make sure the mouse is sec urely plug ged
into the mouse connector.
If you are still experiencing problems, use your supplied Applica tion
Recovery CD to reinstall the mouse d rivers. See “Using the Application Recovery CD(s)” on page 46 for more information.
Why doesn’t the touch pad work properly.
You may have disabled the touch pad without connecting a mouse to the
comput er. To enable the to u chpad :
1 (Windows XP) Press the Windows key , and then press the Up
Arrow key to select All Programs. (Windows 2000) Press the Windows key , and then press the Up
Arrow key to select Programs. 2 Press Enter. 3 Press the Down Arrow key to select Sony Notebook Setup, and
press Enter.

4 Select Sony Notebook Setup again, and press Enter. 5 Press the Right Arrow key to select the Device tab. 6 Press the Tab key to select the left panel, and then press the Down
Arrow key to select Pointing Device. 7 Press Alt+S simultaneously. The Mouse P roperties dial og box appears. 8 Make sure the Buttons ta b is selected, and press the Up Arrow key
and Down Arrow key to change the button assignments. Press the
Tab key to move between shortcut menus. 9 Press Enter to save your cha nges and close the dialog box.
Restart the computer to activate the tou chpad again. If your touch pad is interpreting a single tap as a doub le-click, adjust th e
button assignments. Follow these steps: 1 Right- c lick the Touchpad icon on the right side of the Windows®
taskbar. 2 Select Mouse Properties, and press Enter. Th e Mouse Properties
dialog box appears.
3 Make sure the Buttons tab is open, and press the Up Arrow and
Down Arrow keys to change the button assignments.
4 Press the Tab key to select the Default button, and press Enter. The
button preferences automatically update to the original settings.
5 Press the Tab key to select Apply, and press Enter. 6 Press the Tab key to select OK, and press Enter.
If you are still experiencing problems, make sure another mouse was not
installed.
You may need to use your Application Recovery CD(s) to reinstall the
mouse drivers. See “Using the Application Recovery CD(s)” on page 46 for more information.
Why doesn’ t the pointer move whe n I use the touch pad or mouse.
You should restart your computer. Follow these steps:
1 Press the Windows key .

If you are still experi encing problems, make sure another mouse was not
installed.
You may need to use your su pplied Application Re covery CD(s) to reinstall
the touch pad or mouse drivers. See “Using the Appli ca tion Recovery CD(s)” on page 46 for more information.
Troubleshooting the Docking Station
Why did an error message appear when I correctly disconnected the docking station?
An error message may appear if a software application is open or a device is connected to the docking station. Close all software applications that are in use and disconnect a ny devices. Try to dis connect the docking st ation again. If an error message appears after doing these steps, contact Sony Customer Support.

How do I remove a disc from the optical drive?
To remo v e a d isc fr o m th e o p ti ca l dr i v e, ma k e su r e th e co mputer is tu r n ed on . If the computer is in a power savi ng mod e (Standby or Hibernate), the following instructions will not work.
1 Press any key to return to Normal mod e. 2 Press the Eject button.
How can I open th e optical drive tray if the Eject button does not work?
Your computer comes with a manual eject hole on the c over of the optical drive. Insert a thin, straight object (such as a paper clip) into this hole to eject a disc.
