Features of this unit

Remote control with large LCD screen
The remote control’s two-way communication capability and large LCD screen allows you to view the various information and operation status of the main unit close at hand, while controlling operations.
Listening to the audio data stored on a computer (Home Network function)
This unit supports the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standard. When connected to a DLNA­compliant computer (server) over a wireless LAN (Local Area Network) network, this unit can play back audio data stored on the computer through the speakers of the main unit (Home Network function). Installing the supplied VAIO Media plus software to your computer allows it to be used as a server.

CHARGE indicator
Lights up while the remote control is being charged on the charger. The indicator turns off when charging has completed (page 15).
Display window

Use to stop an operation (playback, recording, etc.).

Use to start or pause playback.

Use to display the HOME menu (page 12).
BACK button
Use to go back to the previous display. Use to go to the next higher directory when viewing a list.

Display window
This section introduces display windows that are frequently used.
Home menu
Appears when you press the HOME button. In this menu, you can select a function with the /// buttons. Press the ENTER button to enter the selected function.
General display
The figure below is an example of the display when a function is selected.

Locate the antenna away from the unit and other AV equipment. Adjust the location and angle for good AM reception.

DAB wire antenna
Use an external DAB antenna (aerial) for a more robust DAB signal. It is recommended you only use the supplied DAB wire antenna for areas of strong DAB reception or as a temporary measure until you install an optional external antenna. Use a 75 coaxial cable with male F type connector to connect the unit to an external antenna. Ensure the antenna is fully extended.
FM wire antenna
Adjust the location and angle for good FM reception.
If preferred, use a commercially available 75 coaxial cable to connect the unit to an external antenna to improve reception.
Ensure the antenna is fully extended.
Connect the power cord to a wall

Note
Keep the FM and AM antennas away from the power cord, remote control, remote control charger, AC power adaptor and USB cable to avoid picking up noise.

Connecting the AC power adaptor (remote control)

The remote control is not fully charged when you first unpack it after purchase. Make sure to fully charge the remote control before using it.
Connect one end of the AC power

adaptor to the DC IN jack of the charger and the other end to a wall outlet.
About automatic demonstration
When you charge the remote control, demonstration images will appear on the display 60 seconds after charging starts. (By default, the display on the remote control lights up and the demonstration images are displayed when the unit is turned off.) To cancel the demonstration, see “Cancelling automatic demonstration” (page 24).
Notes
Do not try to change the built-in battery by yourself.

If you experience a problem with the built-in battery, contact your nearest Sony dealer.
Battery installed devices should not be exposed to

excessive heat such as direct sunlight, fire, or the like.

Using an iPod

Insert an iPod dock adapter into the iPod dock before use. The iPod dock adapter is not supplied with the unit. Use the iPod dock adapter supplied with your iPod. For details on the iPod dock adapter, refer to the operating manual of your iPod.

Preparing a computer to use as a server (VAIO Media plus)

A server is a device which delivers content to a DLNA-compatible playback device on a home network. By installing the supplied VAIO Media plus software (which has a DLNA compliant server function) on your computer, you can enjoy audio data stored on the computer with this unit via your wireless network. For details on the operation of the VAIO Media plus software, refer to the “Help” of the VAIO Media plus software.

Installing the VAIO Media plus software on your computer

To use VAIO Media plus as server software, install the VAIO Media plus software provided on the supplied CD-ROM on your computer.
Turn on your computer and login

with administrator rights.
Insert the supplied VAIO Media plus

CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.
The installation launcher starts automatically, then a Software Setup window appears on the screen. If the installation launcher does not start automatically, double-click “SetupLauncher. exe” on the disc.

Note on firewall software
If the firewall function in commercially available software is enabled on your computer, VAIO Media plus may not work correctly even after the initial setup is completed. In case this happens, refer to the “Help” of the VAIO Media plus software.

Starting up the VAIO Media plus software

On the computer, go to the [Start] menu, and select [All programs] – [VAIO Media plus] – [VAIO Media plus] to start up the software.
The introduction window appears the first time you start the VAIO Media plus software. When it appears, follow the instructions that appear on the screen to set up the initial settings. The Windows Firewall, Share name and Share status settings are automatically configured.

Connecting the unit to your home network (network setting)

After you have installed VAIO Media plus on your computer, carry out the network settings to connect the unit to your computer. If you have any trouble with the network connections, consult the “Troubleshooting” section (page 54).

Setting up the unit to connect to your home network

Note
You may encounter setup difficulties if the unit and the wireless router/wireless LAN access point are located too far from each other. If you do, place the devices closer to each other.
During this setup procedure, you will need some additional information. Make sure you know the following:
the identification name broadcast by your

wireless network (SSID) if your wireless home network is secured by

encryption, the network key (security key)*1 for your network.
*1 E.g., password for your network, WEP key, WPA
key, or WPA2 key
This information should be available from your wireless router/wireless LAN access point operating manual, from the person who set up your wireless network, or the from the information provided by your internet service provider.
For details on the network name (SSID), network key (security key), WEP, WPA and WPA2, see pages 78 and 79.

Tip
If the name of the network (SSID) that you want to connect to does not appear in the display:
Select [Direct Input] in the list of networks and enter the network name (SSID) manually. For details, see “When the desired network name (SSID) does not appear in the list of networks” (page 19).

and then press and hold ENTER.
Enter the exact sequence of letters and numbers that make up your key. Hexadecimal number and ASCII codes can be entered. For details on how to input characters, see “How to enter text” (this page). When the network key (security key) has already been enterd, it appears as “*****”. If you want to change the network key (security key), press BACK to erase the current key, and then set the new one.
Select [Full automatic] from the

Follow the instructions that appear in the display. When you are instructed to press the AOSS button, press and hold the AOSS button on the wireless router/wireless LAN access point until the AOSS or the SECURITY indicator flashes. The wireless router/wireless LAN access point will then be automatically set.

Setting up the unit to connect to your home network through the Instant (S-IWS) connection

If you have the Sony “GIGA JUKE” Music Server and are using Instant (S-IWS) connection to connect to your home network, you can use Instant (S-IWS) connection to set up the wireless network.

You may have to set up a proxy server, depending on the specifications of your Internet provider or the network settings.

Instant (S-IWS) connection is recommended when the unit is only connected to your “GIGA JUKE” Music Server as a server. When connecting the unit to a computer, the manual connection or the AOSS connection is recommended as it can obtain a security level higher than that of the Instant (S-IWS) connection. Use the manual connection or the AOSS connection if higher security level is a priority.

Setting the clock

Getting started
The time must be correctly set on the clock for the correct operation of some features. Do the procedure below to set the clock.
Note
The unit is factory set to start playing demonstration automatically if no operation is performed for about 60 seconds. To disable the automatic demonstration, set the clock.

Cancelling automatic demonstration

The display on the remote control is factory set to automatically light up and playback demonstration images when the power is turned off.
To disable automatic demonstration, do the following.

About automatic demonstration
If you set the clock, the demonstration setting is automatically set to [Off] and it does not start. Playing a CD

Operations

This unit can play audio CDs and CD-R/RW discs recorded with MP3 audio tracks. See page 66 for details on playable discs.

When you turn on the unit, the disc is not pulled

into the disc slot until “No Disc” appears in the display. Do not attempt to push in the disc until “No Disc” appears.
Do not insert a disc with non-standard shapes

(e.g., heart, square, star). Otherwise the disc may fall into the unit and cause irreparable damage.
Do not use a disc with tape, seals or paste on it as this

may cause malfunction. When pressing on the unit and then reinserting the

disc that appears in the disc slot, do not simply push in the disc. Remove the disc from the disc slot and then reinsert it.
Do not turn off the unit with a disc halfway inserted in

the disc slot. Doing so may cause the disc to fall. When you eject a disc, handle the disc by its edge. Do

not touch the surface. Do not push a disc into the disc slot when the unit is

off. Doing so may cause the unit to malfunction. Do not insert an 8 cm disc with an adaptor. Doing so

may cause the unit to malfunction. Do not place any object on the disc slot. Doing so may

cause the unit to produce noise or malfunction.

Notes on inserting/ejecting a disc
If you insert or eject a disc, the unit will automatically

change to the CD function, even when other function was selected.
If you insert a disc while the unit is recording (an

FM/AM/DAB broadcast or sound from an external component (page 43)), the unit will stop recording and change to the CD function.
You cannot eject a disc in the following cases.

— When audio data is being transferred or recorded to
the USB device.
— When erasing audio files or folders on the USB
device.
To change the play mode
You can change the play mode while playback is stopped. Press OPTIONS to enter the Options menu, select [Play Mode], and then select the desired play mode.

Notes on playing MP3 disc
Do not save other types of files or unnecessary folders

on a disc that has MP3 files. Folders that have no MP3 files are skipped.

MP3 files are played back in the order that they are

recorded onto the disc. The unit can only play MP3 files that have a file

extension of “.mp3”. If there are files on the disc that have the “.mp3” file

extension, but that are not MP3 files, the unit may produce noise which could damage the speaker system or may malfunction.
The maximum number of :

— MP3 folders is 999 (including the root folder). — MP3 files that can be contained in a folder is 150. — MP3 files that can be contained on a single disc is
999.
— folder levels (the tree structure of files) is 8.
Compatibility with all MP3 encoding/writing software,

recording device, and recording media cannot be guaranteed. Incompatible MP3 discs may produce noise or interrupted audio or may not play at all.
Notes on playing multisession discs
This unit can play Multi Session CD when an MP3 file

is contained in the first session. Any subsequent MP3 files recorded in later session can also be played back.
If the disc begins with a CD-DA (or MP3) session, it

is recognized as a CD-DA (or MP3) disc, and other sessions are not played back.
A disc with a mixed CD format is recognized as a CD-

DA (audio) disc.
Repeat play is off.
The unit plays all tracks/files repeatedly in the selected play mode.
