This manual applies to several models and there are slight
differences among them. Please check the table below to
see what is equipped with your TV before you begin the
operation.

I Introducing the Sony XBR Series
With this TV, you can:
• Receive up to 125 cable channels for a total of 181 possible
off-air and cable channels with the multi-band
VHF/UHRCATV tuner.
• Receive stereo programs and Second Audio Program
(SAP) broadcasts with the built-in Multichannel TV Sound
(MTS) decoder.
• Get superior VCR playback pictures through the S VIDEO
IN jack (when you connect a VCR with an S video output
jack).
• Watch the picture and sound of your VCR through the monitor
output jacks.
• Get hi-fi sound through the variable audio output jacks
(when you connect an audio system).
All of these features are usually provided on recent Sony TVs.
• Watch two or more channels at the same time (“picture-in
picture”).
— Watch another channel or a VCR in a window picture.
— Store a TV picture and call it up. (digital memo)
— Scan other channels simultaneously and choose one of
them.

29XBR85)
• Get three-dimensional sound reproduction with the 3D
sound system (when you connect two main speakers and
one super woofer speaker).
• Get fine picture constantly with the Active Signal Correction
(ASC) s^em. The ASC system adjusts the signals and cor
rects distorted signals for the entire picture on the screen.
• Get natural sound with the Sound Retrieval System
(SRS®)*.
This 8)^em is effective for both stereo and monaural
sound.
• Set up the TV and adjust the picture and the sound in the
on-screen menu. In the on-screen menu, you can set every
thing with mainly three buttons,-!-/- and RETURN.
All of these are unique features of the XBR series.
And here are the Sony 's advanced technology
that have been applied to the XBR series to
obtain high quality picture:
•The New Dynamic picture^ system adjusts picture contrast
automatically to produce more detail in both bright and dark
areas of every scene.
• The Colorpure Filter^ produces fine picture detail without
color spill or color noise.
•The Velocity Modulation (VM) circuitry produces clean and
sharp black and white contrasts.

•The Dynamic Focus'^ circuitry automatically focuses the
scanning electron beam for enhanced sharpness over the
entire picture, especially in the corners.

• The Trinitone^ control allows you to adjust the color
temperature (tint) of the picture so that you can obtain the
best color.
*Sound Retrieval System (SRS*) reproduces the ambience

being present at the concert hall or recording studio. SRS
lets you enjoy optimum sound from anywhere in the room.

1. Unpack the TV
1 Carefully fate the TV set out of the packing carton ac
cording to the instructions on the outside of the carton.
Save the carton and packing materials for later transport.
Note
The supplied accessories are packed in the upper part of the
carton. Be sure not to dispose of them.
2 Place the TV in a dry, cool place so that the ventilation
openings at the side of the unit are not blocked.
3 Plug the TV into an AC 120 volt power outlet.
Note on inserting the plug
One blade of the plug is wider than the other for the
purpose of safety and will fit into the power outlet only one
way. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the
outlet, contact your dealer.
Safety Notes
Should any liquid or solid object foil into the cabinet, unplug
the unit and have it checked by qualified personnel before
operating it any further.
For owners of the KV*29XBR85
The cover for rear panel is pactod inside the TV stand.
1 When you unpack the TV, open the TV stand doors and
take the cover out from inside the stand.
2 When you have finished making all the connections (see
page 15 to 19 for connecting information), attach the
cover as illustrated below:

Attach the supplied screws.
* Or you can attach the main speakers deep at the rear portion
of the TV.
Step 2: Connect the Main Speakers
Make sure to turn off the TV before connecting the speaker cords.
Install the main speakers left and right.
You can place the main speakers anywhere within the reach
of the speaker cords instead of attaching them to the TV.
When installing them on the TV, be sure not to place them on
the woofer. The speakers are provided with camera screws
for installation on a speaker stand, tripod, eta

Notes on the speakers
• Do not carry the TV holding the main speakers.
• The low bass sound is output from the super woofer. Be careful not
to block the openings of the super woofer when installing the TV.
Otherwise, the low bass sound will not be fully reproduced.
• Be sure to use the supplied speakers, since the TV and the speakers
produce sounds as one unit.

3. Prepare the Remote Commander
Install the batteries in the Programmable
Remote Commander
Push to open the lid.

\ Install two size AA (R6) batteries with the correct polarity.
I Replace the lid.
Install the batteries in the Mini Remote
(The Mini Remote is supplied to KV-27XBRS1,32XBR51,
27XBRSSand32XBRSS, only.)
Insert a thin instrument into the hole, and while pressing
it in the direction of the arrow (0), pull out the battery

case((|)).
• Under normal operation, batteries will last up to half a year.
If the Remote Commander does not operate properly, the
batteries might be œchausted. Replace both of them with
new ones.
• To avoid damage from possible battery leakage, remove the
batteries if you will not use the Remote Commander for a
longtime.
I insert a Sony CR2025 battery with the flat surface
' (positive side) upward.
Caution
On the lithium battery
• Keep the iithium batt^ out of the reach of chikiren.
Shouid the battery be swaiiowed, immediateiy consult a doctor.
• Be sure to observe the correct polarity when installing the battery.
• Oo not hold the battery with metallic tweezers, otherwise a short*
circuit may occur.
• Replace the battery with a Sony CR2025 lithium battery.
Use of another battery may present a risk of fire or explosion.
WARNING
Battery may explode if mistreated. Do not recharge,
disassemble or dispose of it in fire.

When you use an infrared remote control VCR, you can
operate the VCR with the supplied Remote Commander
