Sonance AF8 Installation Instructions Manual

AF8 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Connection to your system is very simple; however, your attention to correct wiring will assure the highest quality sound from your system. Please read the complete instructions before beginning your wiring.
The AF8 is a non-addressable, 200 watts (RMS) impedance matching system that allows the connection of up to eight pairs of 8 ohms speakers to one amplifier or receiver, while maintaining a safe operating impedance (nominal 8 ohms at amplifier).
IMPORTANT NOTE: The connection procedure should only be made with the amplifier power off. Please wait for at least two minutes after turning off your amplifier before making connections.
AMPLIFIER RECOMMENDATION: It is possible to us the Sonance AF8 with an amplifier or receiver from any manufacturer provided the amplifier delivers sufficient power to drive the speakers. Because of the differences in amplifiers and and receivers from many manufacturers, Sonance recommends using an amplifier with a minimum power rating of 50 watts per channel.
AF8 PLACEMENT: A major benefit of the AF8 is the versatility in placement options. Because there is no house current (AC) required for operation, it may be placed anywhere that is convenient. Make sure to place the unit somewhere that is accessible for servicing or wiring changes.
BEHIND EQUIPMENT STACK OR IN CABINETRY: This placement allows the installer to keep wire congestion away from the electronics in the equipment rack.
IN ATTIC, BASEMENT, UTILITY ROOMS SOFFITS AND CRAWL SPACES: With no AC required, the AF8 can be installed using four screws to anywhere that is convenient for connection of all speakers.
ON A STANDARD EIA EQUIPMENT RACK: With the optional AF8 bracket kit (Part #14-0219), the AF8 can be mounted with other rack equipment. The AF8 uses two standard EIA rack spaces (3½”).
WIRING: Always use high-grade Sonance MediaLinQ
®
speaker wire. We recommend at least 18 gauge wire for
runs of 50 feet or less, 16 gauge wire for runs of 50 – 100 feet, and 14 gauge wire for runs over 100 feet.
SOURCE CONNECTIONS: Connect the left and right speaker outputs of the receiver or amplifier to the left and right inputs of the AF8. Make sure to match positive (+) and negative (–) polarities.
SPEAKER CONNECTIONS: Connect your first set of speakers to the terminals marked 1L and 1R. Continue this process in succession for up to eight pairs of speakers. Make sure to match positive (+) and negative (–) polarities.
POSITIONING OF OUTPUT TAPS: Impedance of the speaker system is set manually by the installer. A set of output taps are located in the back of the AF8, and the installer sets the proper position of the taps according to the total speaker impedance. Use the chart below to determing the proper position of the taps.

USING OTHER THAN 8-ohm SPEAKERS: If speakers other than nominal 8 ohm speakers are used in the system it is necessary to calculate the total impedance of the speakers used.
When using an 8-ohm pair of speakers use the value: .125 When using a 6-ohm pair of speakes use the value: .167 When using a 4-ohm pair of speakers use the value: .25
1. Add the values of the speakers in the system. For example, if the system had four pairs of 8 ohm speakers, one pair of 6 ohm speakers and one pair of 4 ohm speakers the formula would be:
(4 x .125) + (1 x .167) + (1 x .25) = .917
2. Divide 1 by the result. The answer is the total resistance of the speaker system. In the example, 1
÷
.917 = 1.09.
For answers between:
8.0 and 4.0, the proper output tap position is the 4 ohm position.
4.0 and 2.0, the proper output tap position is the 2 ohm position.
2.0 and 1.0, the proper output tap position is the 1 ohm position.
