KILSAW INSTRUCTION MANUAL
MODEL 552, 553 & 554 HEAVY DUTY POWER SAWS
BEFORE CONNECTING YOUR TOOL TO A POWER SOURCE
Be sure you have read all safety rules and understand all the instructions in this manual for safe operation of the tool.
VOLTAGE WARNING: Before connecting the tool to a power source (receptacle, outlet, etc.) be sure the voltage supplied is the same as that specified on the nameplate of the tool. A power source with voltage greater than that specified for the tool can result in SERIOUS INJURY to the user-as well as damage to the tool. If in doubt, DO NOT PLUG IN THE TOOL. Using a power source with voltage less than the nameplate rating is harmful to the motor.
GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS: This tool should be grounded while in use to protect the operator from electric shock. The tool is equipped with an approved three-conductor cord and three-prong grounding-type plug to fit the proper grounding-type receptacle. The green (or green and yellow) conductor in the cord is the grounding wire. Never connect the green (or green and yellow) wire to a live terminal. If your unit is for use on less than 150 volts, it has a plug that looks like Fig. "A". If it is for use on 150-250 volts, it has a plug that looks like Fig. "D".
An adapter, Fig. "B" and "C" is available for connecting Fig. "A" plugs to two-prong receptacles, (see Note). The green-colored rigid ear, lug, etc., extending from the adapter must be connected to a permanent ground such as to properly grounded outlet box. No adapter is available for Fig. "D" plugs.
EXTENSION CORDS: Use only three-wire extension cords which have three-prong grounding-type plugs and three-pole receptacles which accept the tool's plug. Replace or repair damaged or worn cord immediately. The following table shows the correct size to use depending on cord length and nameplate amperage rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gage. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage, resulting in loss of power and overheating. NOTE: The smaller the gage number, the heavier the cord.

ATTACHING THE BLADE: 1. Press the lock button and turn wrench until lock button engages detent. Saw shaft is now locked. Continue to depress button, turn wrench counterclockwise and remove stud and outer washer. 2. Retract the lower guard all the way into the upper guard. 3. Slide blade into slot in the foot and mount it over the inner washer on the shaft. When mounting a blade make sure the saw teeth and arrow on the blade point in the same direction as the arrow on the lower guard. 4. Release the lower guard and replace outer washer and stud.
VARI-TORQUE CLUTCH: The vari-torque clutch is designed to help prevent "motor overload" and "saw kickback". When the clutch is properly adjusted the blade will stall and the saw
shaft will continue to turn when the load is too great. To adjust the clutch: Press the locking button to prevent the saw shaft from turning and snug-up the blade stud about 1/8 turn beyond finger tight. If the blade stalls too easily in a normal cut, the stud is too loose. If the motor stalls with the blade, the stud is too tight.
90° CUTTING ANGLE: Loosen bevel and depth adjustmentcheck for 90°. If blade is not 90° to foot, adjust tab with a crescent wrench. Now tighten bevel adjustment first, then depth adjustment.
DEPTH ADJUSTMENT: Not more than one tooth of the blade should extend below the material to be cut for minimum of splintering. Any depth past one tooth should be used only when splintering is no problem. Disconnect the plug. Loosen the wing nut located at the rear and left of the saw. Hold the foot down with one hand and raise or lower the saw by the handle. Tighten the wing nut at the depth setting desired. Check desired angle.
BEVEL ADJUSTMENT: Disconnect plug from power source. The foot can be adjusted up to and including 450 by loosening the wing nut at the front of the saw. Align the desired angle and tighten.
BLADE GUARDS: The upper and lower guards are for the protection of the operator. It is important to keep these clean on the inside, make certain the lower guard operates properly and that you never grasp lower guard at any place but the retracting handle or guard lift lever. The lower guard must stop against the rubber bumper when released. Periodically remove the blade and clean the upper and lower guards.

SWITCH: Operate the switch with firm and decisive action. Your saw should be running at full speed BEFORE starting the cut and turned off only AFTER leaving the material. To increase switch life, do not turn switch on and off while saw is under load.
GENERAL CUTTING: Always hold the saw handle with one hand and the motor housing with the other. Always maintain a firm grip and operate the switch with a decisive action. Never force the saw. Always use a light and continuous pressure. The saw should be running at full speed before the blade contacts the work.
CAUTION: Never attempt to remove the saw from the work while the blade is in motion or kickback may occur.
When making an incomplete cut or cutting is interrupted, release the switch and hold the saw motionless in the material until the blade comes to a complete stop. Always secure material to be cut with a clamp or vise. For a straight angle cut, use the right side of the alignment slot in the foot. For bevel cuts use the left side. The alignment slot will give an approximate line of cut. A sample cut should be made in scrap lumber to verify actual line of cut. This is needed because of the number of different blade types and thickness available. To insure minimum of splintering on the good side of the material to be cut, face the good side down.
CROSS CUTTING: When cutting across the grain the fibers of the wood have a tendency to tear and lift. Advancing the saw slowly minimizes this effect, but for smooth work use a cross cut or miter blade.
3
RIP CUTS: Cutting with the grain does not present the same problem as does cross-cutting. It is therefore possible to use a larger toothed blade with greater "bite" and cut faster without tearing the wood surface. Rip cuts are often long, slim cuts; that are easily done using the optional rip fence. A bevel cut can also be made with the rip fence attached.
TO RIP CUT LARGE SHEETS: If a rip fence does not allow the desired width of cut, clamp a straight piece of 1" lumber to the sheet as a guide. Adjust your saw for minimum blade exposure. Use the right side of the foot against the guide when cutting.
USING THE MITER GUIDE: A miter guide makes, cross cutting, angular and compound angular cuts easy and accurate Disconnect cord from power source and adjust your saw for minimum blade exposure.
POCKET CUTS: 1. Set depth adjustment according to material to be cut. 2. Tilt saw forward with sighting notch lined up with guide line. 3. Raise lower guard. 4. With saw in forward position and BLADE CLEARING THE WORK, pull the trigger. 5. After the saw has reached full speed lower the rear
end to let the blade enter work. The front end of the foot on the work acts as a hinge point. 6. When foot rests flat on work surface, proceed forward to the end of your cut. 7. Release switch, letting saw come to a complete stop; remove the saw from the work and start another cut. Never under any circumstances pull the saw backwards-kickback may result. Saw should be turned around and cut finished in normal manner.
The corners of a pocket cut may not be completely cut through, use a small hand saw to remove the center piece.
CARE OF BLADES: The best blade will not cut efficiently if it is not kept sharp. Using a dull blade places a heavy load on your saw. Keep extra blades on hand, so that sharp blades are available while dull blades are being sharpened.
Unless you are experienced in sharpening blades, you should do no more than touch up your blades. To provide you with sharp blades, SKIL Service Centers maintain a blade exchange service.
Gum and wood pitch hardened on a blade will slow it down.
CAUTION: The use of any other accessories not specified in this manual could create a hazard.
Preventive maintenance of your Skil Saw is very easy. There are just 2 simple steps to follow:
1. After each use: Disconnect the power plug from the outlet. Clean deposits of dust and dirt from the housing and wipe the cord to prevent deterioration from oil and grease.
WARNING: Certain cleaning agents and solvents can damage plastic parts. Some of these are; gasoline, carbon tetrachloride, chlorinated cleaning solvents, ammonia and household detergents that contain ammonia. Avoiding use of these and other types of cleaning agents will minimize the probability of damage.
Your SKIL Dealer and Service Center have many other blades and accessories available for your tools.

SKIL Water Feed Attachments must be used on SKILSAW Portable Saws equipped with diamond grit blades to prevent blade damage. The attachments also may be used with cut-off wheels. SKIL Water Feed Attachments fasten to SKILSAW Portable Saws. The perforated fork supplies water for both sides of the blade. The attachments have 10 feet of hose with standard connection for attaching to faucet or extension hose.
With power disconnected;
drill a hole with same 13/64-inch drill bit.
SKILSAW Portable Saws using Water Feed Attachments must be grounded for the operator's protection. Your SKILSAW Portable Saw is provided with a 3-conductor cord and plug. The longest prong is your ground connection. If your outlet takes this plugyour unit should be grounded automatically each time it is plugged in. However, be sure your Saw is properly grounded. If you do not have the above type outlet, then use adapter (except in Canada). Connect green lead wire to grounded pipe or metal rod driven deep into earth. If water pipe is used as ground and water meter is insulated, attach jumper wire to pipe on each side of meter. Ground your Saw before connecting plug. If Saw is taken apart or new cord attached, connect green ground wire to frame -- not to switch.
For added protection to operator, the use of heavy rubber gloves and boots is recommended. Always wear safety goggles when using diamond grit blades. If there is any question as to how to install your Water Feed Attachment, consult your nearest SKIL factory branch service station listed in your Saw manual.
