SILVA MARINE COMPASS 100B/H
SILVA 100 /125 is especially s uitable for sailing boa ts, motor s ailing ves sels and larger m otor yachts. The comp ass permi ts up to 45° he eling and unlimited tilting for e and aft.
SILVA 100 /125 is suppli ed with a yellow mai n lubberl ine and two yellow a id lines 45 ° on each side of t he main lubbe r line. It has a b uilt-in clin ometer +/- 45°.
The co mpass is del ivered with built-in il luminatio n.
The co mpass can b e supplied w ith compen sators as an o ptional ex tra.
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The packaging includes:
• Compass unit
• Illumination
• Mounting kit
ILLUMINATION
This compass can b e supplied w ith illumination 12 V. Adaptatio n to 24V-illu mination co nnected in s eries by a re sistor of 27 0 ohm, 0.5 W.
POSITIONING
SILVA 100 /125 should be p ositione d vertica lly or slopi ng (max 30°) . Vertical ly only, il a comp ensator i s fitted.
BULKHEAD MOUNT
The co mpass shou ld be positi oned where it can be easil y read from al l angles, e ven in darkness w hen illumi nated. Posi tion the comp ass as far as possible aw ay from iro n objects o r other disturbin g magnetic s ources as lo ud speakers, win dscreen w ipers, ins trument s etc. NB! SILVA s electronic ins truments do not distur b the compas s. When c hecking fo r magnetic di sturbance, use a n ordinar y SILVA handhel d compass , held in the fore -and-aft direc tion aroun d the intende d mounting si te. In most ca ses 0.5 to 1 met re betwee n the com pass and the s ource of dis turbance w ill be sufficie nt. Do not for get to switc h on all elec trical eq uipment nea r the compas s when makin g this check .
MOUNTING
SILVA 100 /125 is intende d for flush mo unting. The co mpass must be moun ted exactly at righ t angles to the boat’s l ongitudin al directi on. NB! Do not t ake It for gra nted that for in stance a bulkhead is at a right angle to the b oats longi tudinal dir ection. D rill a hole b y using the enc losed temp late. The co mpass must have a certain mo unting dept h, otherw ise the comp ass’ expan sion membr ane is ettected, which c ould lead lo leakage.
COMPENSATION AND DEVIATION
Comp ensation i s recommended, if t he deviati on is more than 5 degre es, when th e compass is in its normal mounting position. If the er ror is less than 5 de grees, it i s sufficient to produce a d eviation t able. Comp ensation i s made with th e two compe nsation adjuste r screws ”E /W” an d ”N/S” in order to redu ce the errors cau sed by iron ob jects or ot her source s of magnetic d isturbance. Th e compe nsation ad juster scr ews are situated at t he compass lower f ront edge. When c ompensat ing, the boa t should be in an a rea that is not affe cted by per manent- or ele ctromagnetic disturbances.
1. Aim the boat d ue North an d turn the ”N/ S” screw until the compas s reading is 0°.
2. Aim th e boat due Eas t and turn the ”E/ W” scre w until the compass r eading is 90 °.
3. Aim th e boat due Sou th. If the compass d oes not show 18 0°, turn the ”N/S” s crew until th e erro r is halved. (E .g. If the er ror is 6° - turn the screw until th e error is 3 °.)
4. Aim th e boat due Wes t. If the comp ass does not s how 270°, tu rn the screw until th e error is halved.
5. Go through th e procedur e again and che ck the adjus ted values .
6. Check the compass e very 20 de grees and produc e a deviatio n table and de viation curve.
As the magne tic conditi ons in a boat ar e liable to cha nge, we reco mmend chec king of the com pass o nce a year and alway s after inst allation of equip ment which m ight affec t the compa ss.
NB! Do no t regard the c ompass as a n accurat e navigati onal inst rument un til the comp ensation is c arried o ut and the dev iation ta ble is prod uced. Whe never in dou bt, pleas e seek the advi ce of a compa ss adjust er!
MAINTENANCE
To clean th e compass , use a mild soa p solution o r detergent . Do not use str ong solven ts, such as spirit, acetone or petroleum. The co mpass tole rates temp eratures d own to -30 °C. It is adv isable not to subje ct it to severe cold fo r long peri ods.
