IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS
1) Read Instructions - All the safety and operating instructions should be read before the product is operated.
2) Retain Instructions - The safety and operating instructions
should be retained for future reference.

4) Follow Instructions - All operating and use instructions
should be followed.
5) Cleaning - Unplug this product from the wall outlet before
cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners.
Use a damp cloth for cleaning.
6) Attachments - Do not use attachments not recommended
by the product manufacturer as they may cause hazards.
7) Water and Moisture - Do not use this product near water
- for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or
laundry tub; in a wet basement; or near a swimming pool;
and the like.
8) Accessories - Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket or table. The product
may fall, causing serious injury to a

stand, tripod, bracket or table recommended by the manufacturer or sold

9) A product and cart combination should be moved with

may cause the product and cart combination to overturn.
10) Ventilation - Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided for ventilation and to ensure reliable operation of
the product and to protect it from overheating, and these
openings must not be blocked or covered. The openings
should never be blocked by placing the product on a bed,
sofa, rug or other similar surface. This product should not
be placed in a built-in installation such as a bookcase or
rack unless proper ventilation is provided or the manufacturer's instructions have been adhered to.
11) Power Sources - This product should be operated only
from the type of power source indicated on the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power supply
to your home, consult your product dealer or local power
company. For products intended to operate from battery
power, or other sources, refer to the operating instructions.
12) Grounding or Polarization - This product may be equipped
with a polarized alternating-current line plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other). This plug will fit into
the power outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If
you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try
reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact
your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not
defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug.
13) Power-Cord Protection - Power-supply cords should be
routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or
pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying
particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the product.

14) Lightning - For added protection for this product during a
lightning storm, or when it is left unattended and unused
for long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet
and disconnect the antenna or cable system. This will prevent damage to the product due to lightning and powerline surges.
15) Power lines - An outside antenna system should not be
located in the vicinity of overhead power lines or other
electric light or power circuits, or where it can fall into
such power lines or circuits. When installing an outside
antenna system, extreme care should be taken to keep
from touching such power lines or circuits as contact with
them might be fatal.
16) Overloading - Do not overload wall outlets, extension
cords or integral convenience receptacles as this can
result in a risk of fire or electric shock.
17) Object and Liquid Entry - Never push objects of any kind
into this product through openings as they may touch
dangerous voltage points or short-out parts that could
result in a fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any
kind on the product.
18) Servicing - Do not attempt to service this product yourself

19) Damage Requiring Service - Unplug this product from the

21) Safety Check - Upon completion of any service or repairs
to this product, ask the service technician to perform safety checks to determine that the product is in proper operating condition.
22) Heat - The product should be situated away from heat
sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves or other

Setting the Main Unit
You can install this unit horizontally or vertically. Attach the Foot to
the bottom of the unit (for Horizontal installation) or bottom of the
Stand (for Vertical installation).

Symbols Used in This Manual
The following symbols appear in some headings and notes in
this manual.
Description refers to playback of DVD-Video discs (includ-
ing DVD-RW/-R and DVD+RW/+R discs (Video mode only)).
Description refers to playback of VR mode (Video Recording
format). The VR mode (Video Recording format) is a recording mode to enjoy editing the program or manual mode
for recording in desired resolution and time.
Unauthorized copying, broadcasting, public performance and lending
of discs are prohibited.
Copy Protection
This unit supports Macrovision copy protection.
On DVD discs that include a copy protection code, if the contents of
the DVD disc are copied using a VCR, the copy protection code prevents the videotape copy from playing normally.

Nonuse Periods
• When the unit is not being used, switch the unit to the standby
mode.
• When left unused for a long period of time, the unit should be
unplugged from the household AC outlet.
No Fingers or Other Objects Inside
Do not put your fingers or objects in the disc slot.
Location and Handling
• Do not place anything directly on top of the unit. Do not place the
unit directly on top of the TV.
• Depending on the TV, noise or disturbance of the picture and/or
sound may be generated if the unit is placed too close to your TV.
In this case, please ensure enough space between your TV and the
unit.
• Do not cover or place the unit in enclosed spaces to prevent excessive temperature build up.
• Do not place the unit in direct sunlight, or near heat sources.
• Depending on the environment, the temperature of the unit may
increase slightly. This is not a malfunction.
• Keep the unit away from strong magnetic objects.
• Do not place any object containing water or other liquids on the
unit. In the event that liquid should enter the cabinet, unplug the
unit immediately and contact the retailer or service center approved
by SHARP immediately.
• Do not remove the unit’s cabinet. Touching parts inside the cabinet
could result in electric shock and/or damage to the unit. For service
and adjustment inside the cabinet, call a qualified dealer or service
center approved by SHARP.
• Be sure to remove a disc and unplug the AC power cord from the
output before carrying the unit.
Warning of Dew Formation
Dew may form inside the unit under the following conditions:
• Immediately after a heater is turned on.
• In a steamy or humid room.
• When the unit is suddenly moved from a cold to warm environment.
If dew forms inside this unit, it may not operate properly. In such case,
turn on the power and wait for more than 2 hours for the moisture to
evaporate.
Maintenance
Servicing
1. Please refer to relevant topics in the “TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE”
on page 20 before returning the product.
2. Do not attempt to service this unit yourself. Instead, unplug it and
contact a SHARP Approved Service Center for inspection.
(See CONSUMER LIMITED WARRANTY at the end of this manual.)
3. Be sure the service technician uses authorized replacement parts
or their equivalents. Unauthorized parts may cause fire, electrical
shock, or other hazards.
Following any service or repair, be sure the service technician per-

forms safety checks to certify that this unit is in safe operating order.
5.
If this unit becomes inoperative, do not try to correct the problem by yourself. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Turn off,
unplug the power plug, and please call our help line mentioned on
page 20 to locate an Authorized Service Center.
Cleaning the Cabinet
• Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do
not use a solution containing alcohol, spirits, ammonia or abrasive.
Cleaning Discs
• When a disc becomes dirty, clean it with a cleaning cloth. Wipe the
disc from the center out. Do not wipe in a circular motion.
• Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercially available cleaners, detergent, abrasive cleaning agents or antistatic spray
intended for analog records.
Recommended Measures for Optimum Picture Excellence
This unit is a precision device constructed using extremely accurate
technology.
• The disc cannot be played if the disc drive component is worn out
or if the internal pick up lens is dirty.
• If this unit still does not perform properly although you refer to
the relevant sections and to “TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE” on page
20, the laser optical pickup unit may be dirty. Consult a SHARP
Approved Service Center for inspection and cleaning of the laser
optical pickup unit.
Disc Handling
• When you handle a disc, hold it by its edge and try not to touch the
surface of the disc.
• Always store a disc in its protective case when it is not used.

Only 5 inch discs are available on this unit.
If you cannot play back a disc which bears one of the marks
above, check the following notes.
*1: This unit conforms to the NTSC color system. Discs recorded in
other color systems such as PAL cannot be played back.
*2: Certain DVD-Video discs do not operate as described in this
manual due to the intentions of the disc’s producers.
*3: Scratched or stained discs may not be played back.
*4: Some discs cannot be played back because of incompatible
recording conditions, characteristics of the recorder or special
properties of discs.
*5: You can play back discs which bear the marks above. If you use
nonstandardized discs, this unit may not play them back. Even if
they are played back, the sound or video quality will be compro-
mized.
*6: Depending on the recording status of a disc, the disc may not
be played back at all or normally (the picture or sound may not
be smooth, etc.). In this case, you need to finalize the disc with
the DVD recorder. Refer to the manual accompanying the DVD
recorder.
*7: Only the discs recorded in the video mode and finalized can be
played back. Unfinalized discs cannot be played back. Depending
on the recording status of a disc, the disc may not be played back
at all or the picture or sound may not be smooth, etc.
*8: If the recorded portion of the disc is too small (less than 2 3/16
inches (55 mm) across), it may not play back properly.
*9: Do not glue paper or put stickers on to the disc. These may dam-
age the disc, and the unit may not read it correctly.
*10: Also DTS CD is available when the unit is connected to the DTS
decoder.
: This label indicates playback compatibility with DVD-RW discs
recorded in VR mode (Video Recording Format).
Hint
• This unit cannot play back the DVD-RW/-R recorded of the oncecopy programs.
• This unit cannot play back the DVD-R discs recorded in VR mode
(Video Recording Format).
Unplayable Discs
• NEVER play back the following discs. Otherwise, malfunction
may result:
3 inch (8 cm) disc, DVD-RAM, CD-I, Photo CD, Video CD, DVD with
region codes other than 1 or ALL, DVD-ROM for personal computers,
CD-ROM for personal computers
Hint
• Never insert a disc which is broken or abnormal shape (other than
5 inch (12 cm) round disc).
• Do not use a single CD adaptor which makes 3 inch (8 cm) to 5
inch (12 cm) disc.
• On the following disc, the sound MAY NOT be heard.
Super Audio CD
Hint
• Only the sound recorded on the normal CD layer can be delivered.
The sound recorded on the high density Super Audio CD layer
cannot be delivered.

Installing the Batteries for the Remote
Control
Install two AA size batteries (supplied) matching the
polarity indicated inside battery compartment of the
remote control.
Hint
• Do not mix alkaline and manganese batteries.
• Do not mix old and new batteries.
Operable Range
Keep in mind the following when using the remote
control:
• Make sure that there is no obstacle between the
remote control and the remote sensor on the unit.

CONNECTIONS
Connection to a TV
CAUTION:
• Be sure to turn off the unit and equipment to be connected before connecting.
• Read through the Operation Manual for the equipment to be connected.
• Be sure that the colors of the jacks and plugs match up when connecting the cable.
• Be sure to keep the unit connection cables separate from the TV antenna cable when you install the unit, because it may cause electrical
interference when you are watching television programs.
CAUTION:
• Connect the unit directly to the TV. Do not connect the unit to a VCR, then connect the VCR to the TV. Copyright protection in the VCR could distort the picture
playing on the unit.

Hint
• The unit is sending each video signals simultaneously. If you connected an S-VIDEO OUT and/or a COMPONENT VIDEO OUT with the VIDEO
OUT, make sure your TV’s input mode is set correctly according to the connection you made.
• If you want to listen to the audio through audio equipment, connect only the S-video, component video cable or video cable to the TV.
• You will not be able to hear all of the sound being output by the unit if you use the video/audio cable (supplied) to a monaural TV that has
only one audio input jack.
If your TV is compatible with 525 progressive scanning and you want to enjoy that high quality picture;
You must select the connection Method 3 above and progressive scanning mode. To set the mode, set “PROGRESSIVE” to “ON” in the DISPLAY
menu, so that the PROGRESSIVE indicator on the front panel lights on. See pages 16, 17 for more details.
• When “PROGRESSIVE” is “ON”, video signals from the unit’s VIDEO OUT and S-VIDEO OUT jacks will be distorted or not be output at all.
If your TV is not compatible with progressive scanning;
Use this unit in interlace mode and
unit for more than 5 seconds,
set “PROGRESSIVE” to “OFF” either in the DISPLAY menu or by pressing and holding
so that the PROGRESSIVE indicator on the front panel lights off.

If your TV has Antenna input jack only, it is still possible to connect this unit to your TV by using a STEREO AUDIO/VIDEO RF Modulator
(commercially available).
In this case, follow the instructions below.
1. Connect the AUDIO/VIDEO output jacks of this unit to the AUDIO/
VIDEO input jacks of your RF Modulator by audio and video cables.
2. The antenna input jack of your TV may have been already occupied.
If so, disconnect the RF cable from your TV, and then connect the
RF cable to your RF Modulator (usually marked “ANT IN”).
Connect your RF modulator to your TV by another RF cable.

Set your RF modulator’s channel 3/4 switch to either 3 or 4, whichever the
TV channel is least used in your area. If your RF modulator has a Modulator/
Antenna switch, set it according to your RF modulator’s manual.
5. Turn on your TV and choose the same channel as you set the RF mod-
ulator’s channel 3/4 switch to. For more details, follow the instructions
supplied with the RF Modulator.
