ContactHeartRateSensors
ContactHeartRate(CHR)sensorssendyourheartratesignalstotheConsole.TheCHRsensorsarethestainlesssteelpartsofthe Handlebars.Touse,putyourhandscomfortablyaroundthesensors.Besurethatyourhandstouchboththetopandthebottomof thesensors.Holdfirm,butnottootightorloose.BothhandsmustmakecontactwiththesensorsfortheConsoletodetectapulse. AftertheConsoledetectsfourstablepulsesignals,yourinitialpulseratewillbeshown.
OncetheConsolehasyourinitialheartrate,donotmoveorshiftyourhandsfor10to15seconds.TheConsolewillnowvalidatethe heartrate.Manyfactorsinfluencetheabilityofthesensorstodetectyourheartratesignal:

Movementoftheupperbodymuscles(includingarms)producesanelectricalsignal(muscleartifact)thatcaninterferewith pulsedetection.Slighthandmovementwhileincontactwiththesensorscanalsoproduceinterference.

Callusesandhandlotionmayactasaninsulatinglayertoreducethesignalstrength.
• •
SomeElectrocardiogram(EKG)signalsgeneratedbyindividualsarenotstrongenoughtobedetectedbythesensors.
CHRdetectionmaybelimitedtowalkingorslowjoggingduetotheextrememuscleartifactsandhandmotiongeneratedbya comfortablerunningstyle.Ifyourheartratesignaleverseemserraticaftervalidation,wipeoffyourhandsandthesensors
and try again.

HeartRateCalculations
Yourmaximumheartrateusuallydecreasesfrom220BeatsPerMinute(BPM)inchildhoodtoapproximately160BPMbyage60. Thisfallinheartrateisusuallylinear,decreasingbyapproximatelyoneBPMforeachyear.Thereisnoindicationthattraining influencesthedecreaseinmaximumheartrate.Individualsofthesameagecouldhavedifferentmaximumheartrates.Itismore accuratetofindthisvaluebygettingastresstestthanbyusinganagerelatedformula.
Youratrestheartrateisinfluencedbyendurancetraining.Thetypicaladulthasanatrestheartrateofapproximately72BPM, whereashighlytrainedrunnersmayhavereadingsof40BPMorlower.
TheHeartRatetableisanestimateofwhatHeartRateZone(HRZ)iseffectivetoburnfatandbetteryourcardiovascularsystem. Physicalconditionsvary,thereforeyourindividualHRZcouldbeseveralbeatshigherorlowerthanwhatisshown.
Themostefficientproceduretoburnfatduringexerciseistostartataslowpaceandgraduallyincreaseyourintensityuntilyour heartratereachesbetween60–85%ofyourmaximumheartrate.Continueatthatpace,keepingyourheartrateinthattargetzone forover20minutes.Thelongeryoumaintainyourtargetheartrate,themorefatyourbodywillburn.
Thegraphisabriefguideline,describingthegenerallysuggestedtargetheartratesbasedonage.Asnotedabove,youroptimal targetratemaybehigherorlower.Consultyourphysicianforyourindividualtargetheartratezone.

FitnessTest
TheFitnessTestmeasurestheimprovementsofyourphysicalfitnesslevel.Thetestcomparesyourpoweroutput(inWatts)toyour heartrate.Asyoubecomemorefityouwillproducemorepower(Watts)atagivenheartrate.
Whentheteststarts,thepower(Watts)slowlyincreases.Thismeansyouwillworkharder,andasaresult,yourheartrate increases.TheWattscontinuetoincreaseautomaticallyuntilyourheartratereachesthe“TestZone.”Thiszoneisindividually computedtobenear75percentofyourmaximumheartrate.WhenyoureachtheTestZoneyourmachineholdstheWattssteady for3minutes.Thisletsyoureachastablecondition(whereyourheartratebecomessteady).Attheendofthe3minutes,the Consolemeasuresyourheartrateandthepoweroutput(Watts).Thesenumbers,alongwithinformationaboutyourageand weight,arecomputedtoproducea“FitnessScore”.
Note:FitnessTestscoresshouldonlybecomparedtoyourpreviousscoresandnototherusers.
Overtime,youwilloutputmoreWattsofpoweratacertainHeartRate.CompareyourFitnessScorestoseeyourimprovement.

TheHeartRateControl(HRC)programletsyousetaheartrategoalforyourworkout.Theprogrammonitorsyourheartrateinbeats perminute(BPM)fromtheContactHeartRate(CHR)sensorsonthemachineorfromaHeartRateMonitor(HRM)cheststrap.
