CD/TAPE/RADIO IN
Using a 1/8" mini-plug cable (stereo recommended)
connect your personal CD/tape/radio, etc., via the line
out to the BackTrak™ BT-300 or BT-316M. Simply
plug one end into the BackTrak™ and the other into
your music source (using the appropriate adaptor and/
or cable). You may also connect via the headphone
jack of the music source, however, in some cases,
this may result in input overload and consequent distortion.
MIX/SPLIT
This switch lets you choose what you'll hear in the
headphones. In the MIX position, hear yourself playing mixed with the sample in both the left and right
channels of your headphones. In the SPLIT position,
hear yourself in one channel, and the sample in the
other channel.
LINE OUT
Using standard 1/4" plugs, you can connect the output of the BackTrak to any amplifier (such as a guitar
amp) and listen to both the sample and your instrument.

BT-300 BT-316M OpGd -2002.p65

Congratulations on choosing a
Sabine BackTrak™ phrase
trainer. You now own a powerful
digital sampler that can capture up to 30
seconds of audio material from a stereo radio, cassette, CD player, or any line level instrument
output (via appropriate cable). Play back your recorded
material over and over at your choice of 4 speeds - all
without changing the pitch! The best part is you can jam
along during playback while listening privately through
headphones or through an amplifier!

The BackTrak™ BT-300 and BT-316M have four play-
back speeds (full speed, 2/3 speed, 1/2 speed, 1/3
speed). These speeds allow you to slow your recorded
sample while maintaining the “key” or “pitch” in which
the original was recorded. The BackTrak™ BT-316M's
powerful 16-bit audio processing gives superb play-
back clarity at all speeds!
Your BackTrak™ lets you slow down parts or phrases
of songs so that you can "decode" & learn them. You
can speed up the playback once you decipher the notes.
Before long, you'll decode and master the most difficult musical passages. For lyrics, the BackTrak™ lets
you slow down a wordy section so you can hear each
lyric at a speed you can understand.
The BackTrak™ BT-316M's Power-Off Sample
Memory retains your last recorded sample even when
the BT-316M is turned off! That means you can keep
your sample safely stored until you have it mastered!

BACKTRAK™ QUICKSTART INSTRUCTIONS
The BackTrak BT-300 and BT-316M require the following accessories
• 1/8th inch stereo mini plug cable (male on both ends or with
appropriate adaptors for your CD/cassette player) This connects
your CD or cassette player, etc., to the BT-300 or BT-316M.
• Headphones (1/8th inch stereo mini plug)
GETTING STARTE D
1. Plug your BackTrak power cord into the BackTrak power
jack on the rear of the unit, and plug the transformer into
any standard 110 VAC 50/60Hz (USA) wall outlet.
2. Connect your audio source (CD or cassette player, radio,
etc.) from either the headphone or line out jack and into
the LINE IN jack (1/8" mini plug) of your BackTrak™. For
best results, use a line level signal into the BackTrak's
1/8" stereo LINE IN jack.
3. Play your audio source and simultaneously press STOP
and PLAY on the BackTrak™ to begin recording a sample.
4. Press STOP on the BackTrak™ to end the recording.
5. Choose your BackTrak's playback SPEED and press
PLAY.
To play along with the BackTrak™ through your
headphones, plug your instrument into the
BackTrak 's INSTRUMENT IN jack.
HOT TIPS!
• Make sure the output of your CD/tape is turned up enough to
give the BackTrak™ a strong input signal -- otherwise it may
sound "noisy".
• Turn the RECORD LEVEL of the BackTrak™ as high as pos-
sible without distorting.
• When playing along with the recorded loop, adjust the level on
your instrument to mix well with the sample level.
• For best results, experiment with the HEADPHONE and RECORD
LEVEL in order to find the best settings for your setup.
•
BackTrak™
can record YOUR playing too! NOTE: to do this,
use a mixer or pre-amp to change instrument output to line level.
• The headphone output on some music sources may overload
the BackTrak's input and cause distortion. For best results, use a
RECORD
Pushing the STOP and PLAY buttons simultaneously puts the BackTrak™ into “RECORD
MODE”. Both the STOP and PLAY LEDs will illuminate. The BackTrak™ will record up to 30 seconds of program. If the phrase you are sampling is
less than 30 seconds, you choose the length of
your recording by pressing STOP (just like on a
tape recorder).
PLAY
Pushing PLAY at any time
will start the playback of the
recorded sample from the
beginning. No matter how
long your sample (up to 30
seconds), you can repeatedly press play to hear your
sample from the beginning.
The sample plays back again and
again until you press STOP.
PLAY LIGHT
When an audio program is recorded into the
BackTrak’s memory, the PLAY LED will blink
slowly. If source audio is being fed into the
BackTrak’s input and the BackTrak™ is in STOP
mode, the audio can be heard through the HEADPHONES or LINE OUT.
STOP
Pushing the STOP button will stop either recording or playback of the BackTrak™.
SPEED
The SPEED button lets you control the playback
speed. Each time the SPEED button is depressed,
the indicator LEDs will cycle between FULL, 2/3,
1/2 or 1/3 speed.
line level output.
BACKTRACK BASICS
RECORD LEVEL
This controls the input levels to be recorded. Since
the array of devices you can use as a source of program material will have output levels that vary (such
as a cassette or cd player, a radio, a VCR, etc., via
line outs, headphone outs, etc.), the BackTrak allows
you to compensate for low and high line output levels.
Simply adjust the RECORD LEVEL so that the recording is loud and clear without distorting. You can adjust this level before or during the recording of a
sample; however, we suggest you find an opti-
INSTRUMENT IN
Using 1/4" phone jacks, you can plug in an instrument (guitar, keyboards, etc.) to listen to your playing
through the BackTrak's headphone or line out. NOTE:
The BackTrak™ does NOT record via this input.
INPUT CHANNEL L/L + R/R
Allows you to select which channel(s) of your program
source to record. In some instances, the part you
wish to record may be more prominent in a particular
channel. Use this switch to choose which (or both)
channels you want to record.
mal level through experimentation and then
record your audio source at that level.
NOTE:
Each new sample re-
corded will erase the previously
recorded sample! The BT-
316M saves the most recent
sample after you turn the power
off. The BT-300 will not save
your sample after the unit is
turned off.
HEADPHONE LEVEL
This controls the output volume level
of both the sample and your instrument.
