Thepurposeofthedrainwireistodrainexcessvoltagefromthecableshield, givingitapathtosafety.Thedrainwireprotectsthecable'sinnersignal conductorsfromelectricalnoiseemittedbyothercablesanddevices.
Althoughthedrainwireisnotintendedtogroundtheproduct'sinternal circuits,it'simportantthatthedrainwireisconnectedtothevessel’scommon RFgroundpoint,whichshouldbeusedforallequipmentinyoursystem. Ifseveralitemsrequiregrounding,thedrainwiresanddedicatedground connections(ifavailable)ofallequipmentshouldfirstbeconnectedtoasingle localpoint(e.g.withinadistributionpanel),andthenthispointconnectedvia anappropriately-ratedconductortothevessel'sRFcommongroundpoint.

OnvesselswithoutanRFgroundsystem,thedrainwiresanddedicated groundconnections(ifavailable)ofallequipmentshouldbeconnected directlytothevessel’snegativebatteryterminal.
Thedcpowersystemshouldbeeither:
•Negativegrounded(“bonded”),withthenegativebatteryterminal connectedtothevessel'sRFground.
•Floating,withneitherbatteryterminalconnectedtothevessel'sground.
Thepreferredminimumrequirementforthepathtoground(bondedor non-bonded)isviaaflattinnedcopperbraid,witha30Aratingorgreater. Ifthisisnotpossible,anequivalentstrandedwireconductormaybeused, ratedasfollows:
•forrunsof<1m(3.3ft),use6mm2(10AWG)orgreater.
•forrunsof>1m(3.3ft),use8mm2(8AWG)orgreater.
Inanygroundingsystem,alwayskeepthelengthofconnectingbraidor wiresasshortaspossible.
