With this unit, you can enjoy:
Video from DVDs, VCDs, and DivX fi les that are stored on USB devices. Audio from audio CDs, radio, tape, • external devices, and MP3/WMA fi les that are stored on USB devices. Pictures from picture discs or stored on
USB devices. The unit offers you multiple sound effect settings that enrich sound with Digital Sound Control (DSC) and Dynamic Bass Boost (DBB). The unit supports the following media formats:

Install remote control batteries
Caution

1 Open the battery compartment. 2 Insert 2 AAA batteries with correct
polarity (+/-) as indicated.
3 Close the battery compar tment.
Set the clock
1 In standby mode, press and hold OSD/
DISPLAY on the remote control.
The hour digits are displayed and begin » to blink.
2 Press VOL +/- on the remote control to
set the hours.
3 Press OSD/DISPLAY .
The minute digits are displayed and » begin to blink.
4 Press VOL +/- to set the minutes. 5 Press OSD/DISPLAY to con rm the time.
Tip

Select the correct TV system
Change this setting if the video does not appear correctly. By default, this setting matches the most common setting for TVs in your country.

[NTSC] - For TV with NTSC color system.

Do not push on the disc tr ay or put any objects other than discs on the disc tray.

3 Insert a disc with the printed side facing
up, then close the disc compartment.

With the PBC feature, you can play VCD interactively according to the menu screen.
1 During play, press MENU to enable/
disable PBC.
When PBC is enabled, the menu » screen is displayed.
When PBC is disabled, normal play is » resumed.
Select an audio language
You can select an audio language on DVDs or DivX video.
1 During play, press AUDIO .
The language options appear. If the » selected audio channels is unavailable, the default disc audio channel is used.
Note
For some DVDs, the language can only be changed from the disc menu. Press MENU to access the menu.
Select a subtitle language
You can select a subtitle language on DVDs or DivX® discs.
During play, press SUBTITLE .

Use the disc menu
When you load a DVD/(S)VCD disc, a menu may be displayed on the TV screen. To access or exit the menu manually:

For VCD with PlayBack Control (PBC) feature (version 2.0 only):

Play MP3/WMA/picture fi les
You can play MP3/WMA/picture fi les copied onto a disc or USB device.
1 Insert a disc or connect a USB device. 2 Select a source:
For discs, press DISC . For USB devices, press USB . The disc menu is displayed on the • TV screen.

Play DivX video
You can play DivX fi les copied onto a CD-R/ RW, recordable DVD or USB device.
Note
This unit does not support DivX 6. 0 or above.
1 Insert a disc or connect a USB device.
Play control
Repeat play
You can select various repeat functions during play. The repeat play options vary depending on the disc type.

For DVD
[CHAPTER] : repeat the current chapter
[TITLE] : repeat the current title
[REP ALL] : repeat the disc
[OFF] : switch off the repeat mode
For VCD/MP3/CD/DivX
[REP 1] : repeat the current track
[REP DIR] (for MP3 disc only): repeat the current folder
[REP ALL] : repeat the disc
[OFF] : switch off the repeat mode
1 To return to normal play, press MODE
repeatedly until play mode is no longer
displayed.
Repeat A-B (DVD/VCD/CD/MP3/ WMA)
1 During music or video play, press
REPEAT A-B at the start point.
2 Press REPEAT A-B at the end point.

Play options
Display play information
1 During play, press OSD/DISPLAY
repeatedly to select different play information.
Program
Note
You can program a maximum of 16 tracks/ titles/JPEG picture fi les.
You can program favourite tracks/titles/JPEG picture fi les for play in specifi ed order.
1 In stop mode, press PROG to enter
program mode.
2 Select in the menu and then enter
track/album, title/chapter, or picture fi le number.
3 When the program is complete, press
to start play.
To change a program, repeat the • steps above. To clear the program, press
twice.
Note
The section A and B can be set only within the same chapter/track .
Search by time or chapter/track number
1 During play, press GOTO until a time
eld or chapter/track fi eld is displayed.
For the time fi eld, enter the play position in hours, minutes and seconds. For the chapter/track fi eld, enter the chapter/track. Play starts automatically at your • selected point.

Change camera angle
Some DVDs contain alternate scenes, such as scenes recorded from different camera angles. For such DVDs, you can select from the available alternate scenes.
1 During play, press ANGLE repeatedly to
switch between camera angles.
Change the audio channel
Note
This feature is only available for VCD/DivX play.
1 During play, press AUDIO repeatedly to
select an audio channel available on the
disc:

Zoom in/out image
1 During video/picture play, press ZOOM
repeatedly to zoom in/out the image.
When the image is zoomed in, you • can press the image.

Select TV system
Select the color system that matches the connected T V.
1 Press SETUP . 2 Select [SYSTEM SETUP] > [TV SYSTEM] ,

[NTSC] For TV with NTSC color system.
[PAL] For TV with PAL color system.
[AUTO] For TV with multiple color systems.

Set screen saver
The screen saver protects the TV screen damage due to prolonged exposure to a static image.
1 Press SETUP .
The system setup menu is displayed. »
2 Select [SYSTEM SETUP] > [SCREEN
SAVER] , and then press

[ON] Enable the screen saver.
[OFF] Disable the screen saver.

Change parental control password
You can set a password to restrict play of certain discs.
1 Press SETUP . 2 Select [SYSTEM SETUP] > [PASSWORD] ,
and then press

3 Enter the four-digit password with
Numeric keypad 0-9 and then press OK .
To change the password, enter a • new password, and then press OK .
4 Press SETUP to exit.
Note
The default password (0000) remains valid even if a new password is set.
Restrict DVD play
Some DVDs may have a parental level assigned to the complete disc or to cer tain scenes on the disc. You can set a playback permission level for the scenes with this setting.
Select TV type
The T V format determines the aspect ratio of display according to the type of TV you have connected.

Note
VCD, SVCD, and C D have no level indication, so parental control function has no effect on those kind of discs. Some DVDs are not encoded with a rating though the movie rating may be printed on the Disc cover. The r ating level features does not work for such discs.

DivX is a popular media technology created by DivX, Inc. DivX media fi les contain highly compressed video with high visual quality that maintains a relatively small fi le size. DivX les can also include advanced media features like menus, subtitles, and alternate audio tracks. Many DivX media fi les are available for download online, and you can rent and purchase DivX videos with the DivX VOD (Video on Demand) service. To use this service, you need the DivX VOD registration code of the unit. For more information and instructions, visit www.divx.com/vod.

Select a suitable audio downmix when you play a DVD recorded in Dolby Digital format.

[LT/RT] Select this if the unit is connected to a Dolby Pro Logic decoder.
[STEREO] Select this when output delivers sound from only the two front speakers.

Tip
For optimal FM reception, fully ex tend and adjust the position of the FM antenna. For optimal MW r eception, adjust the position of the main unit.
1 Press TUNER to select the tuner source. 2 Press TUNER to select FM or MW. 3 Press and hold / for more than 2
seconds.
The radio tunes to a station with » strong reception automatically.
4 Repeat step 3 to tune to more stations.
To tune to a weak station, press • / repeatedly until you fi nd optimal reception.
Program radio stations automatically
Program radio stations manually
Note
You can program a maximum of 40 preset r adio stations (20 FM radio s tations and 20 MW r adio stations).
1 Tune to a radio station. 2 Press PROG to activate program mode.
[PROG] (program) blinks on the » display.
3 Press / to allocate a number (1 to 20)
to this radio station, then press PROG to confi rm.
The preset number and the frequency » of the preset station are displayed.
4 Repeat the above steps to program other
stations.
Note
To overwrite a programmed s tation, store another station in its place.

Maintenance
Clean the cabinet
Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with • a mild detergent solution. Do not use a solution containing alcohol, spirits, ammonia or abrasives. Clean discs When a disc becomes dir ty, clean it with • a cleaning cloth. Wipe the disc from the centre out.
Do not use solvents such as benzene, • thinner, commercially available cleaners, or antistatic spray intended for analogue records. Clean the disc lens Af ter prolonged use, dir t or dust may • accumulate at the disc lens. To ensure good play quality, clean the disc lens with Philips CD lens cleaner or any commercially available cleaner. Follow the instructions supplied with cleaner. Clean the heads and the tape paths To ensure good recording and play • quality, clean the heads A , the capstan(s) B , and pressure roller(s) C after every 50 hours of tape operation. 12 Troubleshooting
Warning
Never remove the casing of this apparatus.
To keep the warranty valid, never try to repair the system yourself. If you encounter problems when using this apparatus, check the following points before requesting service. If the problem remains unsolved, go to the Philips web site www. philips.com/welcome. When you contact Philips, ensure that the apparatus is nearby and the model number and serial number are available.
No power
Ensure that the AC power plug of the unit is connected properly. Ensure that there is power at the AC outlet. To save power, the system switches off automatically 15 minutes after track play reaches the end and no control is operated.
No sound or poor sound
Adjust the volume. Check that the speakers are connected correctly. Check if the stripped speaker wires are clamped.
Left and right sound outputs reversed
Check the speaker connections and location.
No response from the unit
Disconnect and reconnect the AC power plug, then turn on the system again. As a power-saving feature, the unit switches off automatically 15 minutes after track play reaches the end and no control is operated.
Remote control does not work
Before you press any function button,
rst select the correct source with the remote control instead of the main unit. Reduce the distance between the remote control and the unit.

Insert the battery with its polarities (+/– signs) aligned as indicated. Replace the battery. Aim the remote control directly at the sensor on the front of the unit.
No disc detected
Insert a disc. Check if the disc is inserted upside down. Wait until the moisture condensation at the lens has cleared. Replace or clean the disc. Use a fi nalized CD or correct format disc.
The aspect ratio of the TV screen cannot be changed even though you have set the TV display format.
The aspect ratio if fi xed on the loaded DVD disc. The aspect ratio may not be changed for some TV systems.
Audio or subtitle languages cannot be set
The disc is not recorded with sound or subtitles in multiple languages. The audio or subtitle language setting is prohibited on the disc.
The DVD player does not respond when buttons are pressed.
Disconnect the power plug from the jack, and insert again.
Poor radio reception
Increase the distance between the unit and your TV or VCR . Fully extend the FM antenna. Connect an outdoor FM antenna instead.
Timer does not work
Set the clock correctly. Switch on the timer.
Clock/timer setting erased
Power has been interrupted or the power plug has been disconnected. Reset the clock /timer.
Cannot display some fi les in USB device
The number of folders or fi les in the USB device has exceeded a cer tain limit. This phenomenon is not a malfunction. The formats of these fi les are not supported.
USB device not supported
The USB device is incompatible with the unit. Try another one.

A
Analog audio
Sound that has not been turned into numbers. Analog sound is available when you use the AUDIO LEFT/RIGHT. These red and white jacks send audio through two channels, the left and right.
Aspect ratio
Aspect ratio refers to the length to height ratio of TV screens. The ratio of a standard TV is 4:3, while the ratio of a high-defi nition or wide T V is 16:9. The letter box allows you to enjoy a picture with a wider perspective on a standard 4:3 screen.
AUDIO OUT sockets
Red and white sockets that send audio to another system (TV, Stereo, etc).
B
Bit rate
Bit rate is the number of bits that are conveyed or processed per unit of time. The bit rate is usually measured in some multiple of bits per second (kilobits per second: kbps). The term bit rate is a synonym for data transfer rate (or simply data rate).
C
Chapter
Chapter Sections of a picture or a music piece on a DVD that are smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters. Each chapter is assigned a chapter number that enables you to locate a specifi c chapter.
D
Digital Audio
Digital Audio is a sound signal that has been conver ted into numerical values. Digital sound can be transmitted through multiple channels. Analog sound can only be transmit ted through two channels.
Disc menu
A screen display that allows election of images, sounds, subtitles, multi-angles, etc., recorded on a DVD.
DivX®
The DivX® codec is a patent-pending, MPEG-4 based video compression technology developed by DivX®, Inc. It can shrink the fi le size of digital video and still maintain the high visual quality.
Dolby Digital
A surround sound system developed by Dolby Laboratories that contains up to six channels of digital audio (front left and right, surround left and right, center and subwoofer.)

JPEG
A very common digital still picture format. A still-picture data compression system proposed by the Joint Photographic Expert Group, which features small decrease in image quality in spite of its high compression ratio. Files are recognized by their fi le extension ‘.jpg’ or ‘.jpeg.’
M
MP3
A fi le format with a sound data compression system. MP3 is the abbreviation of Motion Picture Exper ts Group 1 (or MPEG-1) Audio Layer 3. With the MP3 format, one CD-R or CD-RW can contain about 10 times more data than a regular CD.

Multichannel
Usually DVD is specifi ed to have each sound track constitute one sound fi eld. Multichannel refers to a structure of sound tracks having three or more channels.
P
Parental control
A function of the DVD to limit playback of the disc by the age of the users according to the limitation level in each country. The limitation varies from disc to disc; when it is activated, playback will be prohibited if the sof tware’s level is higher than the user-set level.
PBC
Playback Control. A system where you navigate through a Video CD/Super VCD with on-screen menus that are recorded onto the disc. You can enjoy interactive playback and search.
PCM
Pulse Code Modulation. A digital audio encoding system.
T
Title
On commercial DVDs, this is the longest section of a movie or music feature on DVD. Each title is assigned a title number, so that you can locate the title you want. When you record programs, they are stored as titles. Depending on the recording settings, recorded titles may automatically contain several chapters.
V
VIDEO OUT socket
Yellow socket that sends the DVD picture video to a TV.
R
Region code
A system that allows discs to be played only in the region designated. This unit only plays discs that have compatible region codes. You can fi nd the region code of your unit on the product label. Some discs are compatible with more than one region (or ALL regions.)
S
Surround
A system that creates realistic, three­dimensional sound fi elds. It is usually achieved with multiple speakers that are arranged around the listener.
