First Steps
STEP 1
Attach the strap as shown below. Repeat for the second eyelet.
STEP 2
The camera uses a rechargeable EN-EL5 Li-ion battery (supplied). Charge the battery
with the supplied MH-61 battery charger before first use or when the battery is running low.
Attach the Camera Strap
Charge the Battery
Connect the power cable to the charger (q) and then plug it into a power
outlet (
w). The CHARGE lamp will light (e).
Remove the battery terminal cover and insert the
battery as shown, matching the projections on the
battery to the indentations in the charger.
The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. Charging is
complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking.
An exhausted battery charges in about two hours.

After charging the battery, insert it as described below.
Insert the Battery
Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover.
The orange battery latch is pushed aside as the
battery is inserted. The battery is fully inserted
when the latch clicks back into place.
Inserting the Battery
Inserting the battery upside down or backwards
could damage the camera. Check to be sure the battery is in the correct orientation.
Close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover.
Removing the Battery
Turn t he ca mera off before removing or inserting batteries.
To eject the battery, open the battery-chamber/memory
card slot cover and slide the battery latch in the direction
shown. The battery can then be removed by hand
that the battery may become hot during use; observe due
caution when removing the battery.

Turn the Camera On
Rotate the mode dial to U (auto).
The Quick Start Guide describes how to take pictures in U (auto) mode, an automatic, “point-andshoot” mode recommended for first-time users of
digital cameras.
Press the power switch to turn the camera on. The
green power-on lamp will be lit and the monitor
will turn on.
Memory Cards
The camera stores pictures in internal memory (approximately 21 MB) or on removable
Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. Internal memory is used for recording and deletion
only if no memory card inserted.
To insert a memory card:
1 If the power-on lamp is lit, press the power switch to turn the camera off.
2 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as
shown in Step 3– and slide the memory card in until it
clicks into place. Insert the card as shown at right; do not
insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the
memory card, close the memory card slot cover as
shown in Step 3– .
3 Turn the camera on. If the message shown at right is dis-
played in the monitor, the memory card must be formatted before it can be used in the camera. Press the multi
selector up or down to highlight For mat and press B.
Do not turn the camera off or remove the battery or memory card until formatting is complete.
Note that formatting permanently deletes all pictures
and other data on the memory card. Before formatting, be sure to make copies of
any pictures you wish to keep.
To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp is
off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in to partially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand.

Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock
A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date.

Ready the Camera
Hold the camera steadily in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash, and AFassist illuminator.
STEP 3
Frame a Picture
Frame the subject near the center of the monitor. Use the
zoom control to adjust the size of the framed subject.

Select T to zoom in on the subject so that it fills a larger area
of the frame. Select W to zoom out, increasing the area visi-

Lightly press the shutter-release button about
halfway, stopping when you feel resistance. The
camera will set focus and exposure for the subject in the center AF area. Focus and exposure
remain locked while the shutter-release button
is pressed halfway.

Press the power switch to turn the camera off. The power-on lamp will go out.
Auto off (Stand-by Mode)
If no operations are performed for about five seconds in shooting mode, the monitor
will dim to save power. Using any of the camera controls will reactivate the display. If no
operations are performed for about a minute, the monitor will turn off; after a further
three minutes, the camera will turn off automatically.
Using Camera Menus
A variety of shooting and playback settings can be
adjusted from the camera menus. Press the F button
to display the menu for the current mode and use the
multi selector to select an option as described on page 6.
If a “?” icon is displayed in the monitor, help for the current
menu item can be viewed by pressing the zoom control
to T (L). To return to the original menu, press the zoom
control to T (L) again.
To exit the menu, press the F button
again.

PictureProject
Install the supplied PictureProject software to transfer pictures to a computer for easy
viewing and storage (note that administrator privileges are required to install, use, or
uninstall PictureProject).
1 Organize: View and organize pictures.
2 Edit: Crop pictures, adjust brightness and hue, and use other retouch tools.
3 Design: Arrange pictures.
4 Collection list: Group pictures into collections and folders.
5 Picture list: View the pictures in the current collection or folder.
PictureProject can also be used for a variety of other tasks, including printing pictures,
sending pictures by e-mail, viewing slide shows, and copying pictures to CD or DVD.

Installing PictureProject
Turn the computer on and insert the PictureProject installer CD into a CD-ROM
drive. Before proceeding, exit all other applications and turn off any viruschecking software.
Select a language and click Next.
Windows XP/2000: The Install Center program will start and a “Select Language”
dialog will be displayed.
Windows Vista: Follow the on-screen instructions to display “Select Language“
dialog.
If the Install Center program does not start automatically, select Computer or MyComputer from the Start menu (Windows Vista/Windows XP) or double-click
the My Computer icon on the desktop (Windows 2000 Professional) and double-click the CD-ROM (PictureProject) icon.
Macintosh: Double-click the PictureProject installer CD icon on the desktop,
then double-click the We lcom e icon. After entering the administrator name
and password and click OK, the Install Center program will start. “Select Language” dialog will be displayed.
Click Easy Install.
Easy Install: Install the minimum software needed
to run PictureProject.
Custom Install: Install selected software.
Try other Nikon Software: Download trial versions of
other Nikon software from a Nikon website
(Internet connection required).

Install the PTP driver (Windows XP only).
If prompted to install the PTP drivers, click OK and follow the on-screen
instructions to complete installation (some versions of Windows XP may display a setup wizard).
Follow the on-screen instructions to install Panorama Maker.
Click Ye s to install QuickTime (some time may be required to complete installation on some systems).
Installing QuickTime Under Windows Vista
See the Apple website for Windows Vista support information. Nikon recommends downloading and installing the most up-to-date version of QuickTime for
Windows Vista.
Macintosh
If earlier version of QuickTime is installed, Macintosh users will be prompted to
install QuickTime following installation of PictureProject. Follow the on-screen
instructions to complete installation.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install Fotoshare.
Macintosh
Macintosh users must install Nikon Fotoshare manually when installation of
PictureProject is complete. To install Nikon Fotoshare, open the “Fotoshare”
folder on the PictureProject installer CD and drag the Nikon Fotoshare icon to
the “Applications” folder on the computer hard disk.
After reading the license agreement, click Ye s (Windows) or Accept (Macintosh) to proceed.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install PictureProject.

Click Finish (Windows) or Quit (Macintosh) to
exit the PictureProject installer.
DirectX 9 (Windows XP/2000)
If DirectX 9 is not already installed, a DirectX 9 installer dialog will be displayed.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install DirectX 9.
Click Ye s (Windows) or OK (Macintosh) to close the “Install Center” window. If
prompted to restart the computer, follow the on-screen instructions.
The PictureProject Import Assistant will be
displayed. To proceed without cataloging images,
click Close. Images can be cataloged at any time;
see the PictureProject reference manual on the
silver CD for details.
Remove the PictureProject installer CD from the CD-ROM drive.
Software Updates
If the computer is connected to the Internet, PictureProject will periodically check for
updates. If an update is detected when PictureProject starts, an update dialog will be
displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to update to the latest version of
PictureProject.

Before You Begin
Before copying pictures to a computer, confirm that:
• PictureProject is installed: If PictureProject is not installed before the camera is con-
nected, a hardware wizard may be displayed. Click Cancel to exit and then discon-
nect the camera.
• The appropriate option is selected in the camera USB menu: If you are using Windows 2000,
you will need to change the Interface > USB option in the camera setup menu fromMTP/PTP (the default setting) to Mass storage as described below.
Rotate the mode dial to R.Highlight Interface and press B.
Highlight USB and press B.Highlight Mass storage and press B.
Use a Reliable Power Source
Nikon recommends using a fully charged battery or the optional EH-62A AC adapter kit
to power the camera for extended periods. Do not use another make or model of AC
adapter.

Turn the camera off.
Connect the USB cable as shown below. Connect the camera directly to the
computer; do not connect the cable via a USB hub or keyboard. Do not use
force.
Turn the camera on. PictureProject will automatically detect the camera and
the PictureProject Transfer window will be displayed in the computer monitor.
Click Transfer to copy all the pictures in the camera memory to the computer.
Windows Vista/XP
If the dialog shown at right is displayed, select the
PictureProject option and click OK. To bypass this
dialog in future, check Always use this program forthis action.
