desktop (Macintosh). Double-click the INDEX.pdf icon to display a language selection screen. Click a lan­guage to display the User’s Manual.

First Steps
STEP 1
Attach the strap as shown below. Repeat for the second eyelet.
STEP 2
The camera uses a rechargeable EN-EL5 Li-ion battery (supplied). Charge the battery with the supplied MH-61 battery charger before first use or when the battery is run­ning low.

Charge the Battery
Connect the power cable to the charger (q) and then plug it into a power outlet (
w). The CHARGE lamp will light (e).
Remove the battery terminal cover and insert the battery as shown, matching the projections on the battery to the indentations in the charger.
The CHARGE lamp will start to blink. Charging is complete when the CHARGE lamp stops blinking.
An exhausted battery charges in about two hours.

STEP 3
After charging the battery, insert it as described below.

Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover.
The orange battery latch is pushed aside as the battery is inserted. The battery is fully inserted when the latch clicks back into place.
Inserting the Battery
Inserting the battery upside down or backwards could damage the camera. Check to be sure the bat­tery is in the correct orientation.
Close the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover.
Removing the Battery
Turn t he ca mera off before removing or inserting batteries. To eject the battery, open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and slide the battery latch in the direction shown. The battery can then be removed by hand that the battery may become hot during use; observe due caution when removing the battery.

Turn the Camera On
Rotate the mode dial to U (auto).
The Quick Start Guide describes how to take pic­tures in U (auto) mode, an automatic, “point-and­shoot” mode recommended for first-time users of digital cameras.
Press the power switch to turn the camera on. The green power-on lamp will be lit and the monitor will turn on.
Memory Cards
The camera stores pictures in internal memory (approximately 21 MB) or on removable Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. Internal memory is used for recording and deletion only if no memory card inserted.
To insert a memory card:
1 If the power-on lamp is lit, press the power switch to turn the camera off. 2 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover as
shown in Step 3– and slide the memory card in until it clicks into place. Insert the card as shown at right; do not insert it upside down or backwards. After inserting the memory card, close the memory card slot cover as shown in Step 3– .
3 Turn the camera on. If the message shown at right is dis-
played in the monitor, the memory card must be format­ted before it can be used in the camera. Press the multi selector up or down to highlight For mat and press B.
Do not turn the camera off or remove the battery or mem­ory card until formatting is complete.
Note that formatting permanently deletes all pictures and other data on the memory card. Before formatting, be sure to make copies of any pictures you wish to keep.
To remove memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp is off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in to par­tially eject the card. The card can then be removed by hand.

STEP 5
Choose a Language and Set the Camera Clock
A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Fol­low the steps below to choose a language and set the time and date.

Use the multi selector to navigate the menus.

Highlight language and press B. Highlight Ye s and press B.
If daylight saving time is in effect, press the multi selector down to highlight Day- light saving and press B to select. Press the multi selector up to return to .
The time zone menu is displayed.
Press right to display submenu or move cursor right

Select home time zone and press B.
Select Month. Repeat Steps – to edit Month, Year, hour, and minute.
Edit Day (order of day, month, and year may differ in some areas)
and press B.
Highlight D M Y. Choose date display order. Press B to set the clock and exit to shooting mode.
When daylight saving time ends, turn Daylight saving off from the Date menu in the setup menu. The camera’s clock is automatically set back one hour. For more informa­tion on setting date and time, see page 84 of the User’s Manual (on CD).

Shooting mode
To take pictures in 0 (auto) mode, rotate mode dial to A (B 14). To select a mode, align the mode icon with the mark next to the mode dial.
