the equipment. It instructs you how to safely and easily install
this bumper kit onto your machine.
All the information in this manual is relative to the most recent
product information available at the time of printing. Please be
aware that this Operator’s Manual may cover a range of product
specifications for various models. Characteristics and features
discussed and/or illustrated in this manual may not be applicable
to all models. MTD LLC reserves the right to change product

machine are observed from the operating position

Determine The Model of Your Rider
This manual is designed for installation of your new bumper kit
attachment on several different tractor platforms. It is important
for you to determine which model of tractor that you have.
To determine the model of tractor, locate the model plate
found underneath the seat. The model plate consists of an 11
digit/letter model number and a serial number. For ease in this
installation and for future use, copy your tractor’s model number
& serial number below now:

Note: This information is also important should you have to call
MTD for any reason regarding this installation process.
The 5th number in your model number determine your rider’s
model series.
When you fill in your model number in the space above, the
actual model series number should fall into the gray shaded area.
Follow the instructions that pertain to that particular model. For
instance, 100, 600, 800, 900 newer 700 model series follow one
set of instructions. And older 700 model series follows the other
set of instructions.

This Bumper kit is shipped with a hardware pack enclosed. This hardware pack may contain extra parts for installation on a different
rider from which you have. Please check your hardware pack against the illustration below in accordance with your model of rider as
determined in this manual.

WARNING! Before beginning installation, place the
tractor on a firm and level surface. Place the PTO in the
disengaged (OFF) position, stop the tractor engine
and set the parking brake.
NOTE: References to LEFT and RIGHT indicate the left and
right sides of the tractor when facing forward in the operator’s
position. Reference to the FRONT indicates the grille end; to the
REAR the drawbar end.
Mounting Bumper to Model 100, 600, 800, 900 and
Model year 2007 & Newer 700 Tractors
WARNING! Muffler may be hot! Make sure engine
has cooled down before installing bumper.
NOTE: On some older units, a shoulder bolt may already be
present. If this is the case, skip Step 1.
Install the two shoulder bolts onto the tractor as seen in 1.
Mounting Bumper to Model Year 2006 and Prior
700 Series Tractors
WARNING: Muffler may be hot! Make sure engine
has cooled down before installing bumper.
To mount the bumper to the tractor, slide the bumper 1.
over the front brackets, aligning the top-rear holes in the

Fig. 3-1, and secure with two lock nuts from the hardware
pack.
To mount the bumper to the tractor, hook the notched 2.
ends (slots) of the bumper onto the shoulder bolts on the
sides of the tractor frame. See Fig. 3-1.
Align the holes in the bumper with the holes in the tractor 3.
frame and insert the quick release pin through the top hole
of the bumper assembly from the outside as seen in Fig.
3-1. Repeat on the opposite side.

Insert a 5/16-18” shoulder bolt, from the hardware pack, on 2.
each side of the tractor through the upper notched section
of the bumper and then the aligning tractor mounting
hole. Secure with a 5/16-18 flange lock nut from the
hardware pack. See Fig. 3-2.
Insert a 5/16-18” hex bolt on each side from the outside 3.
through the holes and secure with the hex flange nuts. See
Fig. 3-2.
IMPORTANT: If the tractor is equipped with a muffler guard
between the tractor brackets, the hex bolts should be bolted into
the guard. The nuts will not be necessary.
