Transporting
The steam ironing system is fitted with two castors. These allow the appliance to be pulled and pushed on flat surfaces while in the folded up position.
^ Hold the steam ironing system by the
handle and tip it slightly towards you until the castors are free to move.
Always transport up and down stairs with two people. The ironing board must be at the bottom when transporting this way.
This makes it easier to transport across carpet edging, door thresholds and single steps.
14
^
Use the handles on the base of the tower to transport horizontally.
,
Do not transport the appliance with the ironing board at the top. Otherwise, the locking mechanism on the tower may come loose and the ironing board could cause injury or damage to property.
Move the steam ironing system to a
^
desired location.
^ Pull the release handle upwards
while holding the handle on the back of the tower to keep it steady.
The locking mechanism of the tower will be released and, at the same time, the X-frame will unfold.
Assembling
Pull the back of the ironing board
^
upwards with both hands until it clicks into place at the horizontal position.
^
Hold the release handle pulled out and guide the ironing board until it clicks into place at a position of approx. 45°.
The board will hold independently in this position.
^
Ensure the ironing board is engaged on both sides of the tower. Otherwise the height of the ironing board will not be able to be adjusted.
15
Assembling
The steam ironing system is now assembled. This is the lowest working position with a height of 83 cm.
16
Height adjustment
You can adjust the steam ironing system to suit your individual height.
Make sure the mains connection cable does not become jammed while doing this.
Ensure the ironing board is locked into place on both sides of the tower (see 'Assembling'). Otherwise the height of the ironing board will not be able to be adjusted.
Assembling
At the same time, use your other
^
hand to pull the handle on the back of the tower upwards.
or
^ Push the handle on the tower
downwards to lower the ironing board.
^
Activate one of the dials located on either side of the tower by turning it towards q as far as it will go and then hold it there.
Do not push down on the ironing board itself.
^
When the ironing board is at the required height, release the dial and it will return to the centre position.
We recommend adjusting the ironing board to about the height of your hips in order for you to be able to iron comfortably.
The ironing board will remain at the set position until adjusted again.
As an additional means of stabilising the ironing boad at the required height, it audibly clicks into place when any load is placed on it.
The highest working position is approx. 102 cm.
17

The iron must not be stood with the pointed end facing upwards. It may tip over and fall off the tower. Always place the iron with the sole plate resting against the iron rest.
20
Before using for the first time
Before using your Miele steam ironing system, you should first familiarise yourself with all functions in order to be able to use them correctly.
Remove all packaging from the
^
steam ironing system (e.g. film on tower, etc.).
When using for the first time, a slight smell may be given off during the heating-up phase. This will dissipate with further use.
Pumping, boiling and knocking noises may be heard during the heating-up phase. These are normal noises that occur during operation.
Water hardness
For trouble-free operation of the steam ironing system, and to ensure that the descaling reminder appears at the appropriate time, it is important to set the water hardness level for your area. The water hardness level indicates how much calcium is dissolved in the water. The higher the calcium content, the harder the water, and the harder the water, the more often the appliance will need to be descaled.
Your local water authority will be able to tell you the hardness of water in your area. This information can often be obtained from the internet homepage of your local water authority.
Set the water hardness according to the values given in the chart below. The programmed water hardness level can be recognised by the flash frequency of the indicator light k.
°dH mmol/l °f Flash
frequency
1 - 4 0.2 - 0.7 2 - 7 1 short
5 - 7 0.9 - 1.3 9 - 13 2 short

46 - 70 8.3 - 12.6 83 - 126 10 short
21
Before using for the first time
If you cannot obtain information on your water hardness level from your local water authority, you can measure the hardness yourself using the test strip supplied:
^ Dip the strip in your drinking water for
approximately one second, then shake off any excess water. The result will be evident after about a minute.
Set the water hardness according to the values given in the chart below. The programmed water hardness level can be recognised by the flash frequency of the indicator light k.
Please go to 'Switching on'.
If the water hardness in your area is different, set the appliance to the appropriate level.
Where the water hardness fluctuates e.g. between 1.4 - 3.1 mmol/l (8 - 17 °d German scale), always programme the appliance to the higher value (3.1 mmol/l in this example).
In the event of a fault, it will help the service technician if you know the hardness of your local water supply.
Enter the water hardness level here:

The steam ironing system is set at the factory to the highest water hardness level (70 °dH - AU/NZ 12.6 mmol/l). If this setting corresponds to the hardness of your water, you do not need to do anything more.
22
Setting the water hardness level
You can programme the water hardness level using the buttons on the control panel.
The programming procedure can be cancelled at any time by pressing the s button. The procedure can then be restarted from the beginning again.
To programme the water hardness level:
^ Switch off the steam ironing system
using the s button if it is switched on.

Press and hold the j button and simultaneously switch on the appliance with the s button. Hold the j button until the indicator light k lights up yellow.
If this does not happen, start the procedure from the beginning again.
The indicator light k flashes 10 times at intervals and the indicator light k gives one long flash (default setting).
The programmed water hardness level can be recognised by the flash frequency of the indicator light k (see chart for water hardness).
Before using for the first time
Press the j button briefly to select
^
the number of flashes which equates to your water hardness level. Each press of the button moves you up a level. When the highest water hardness level is reached, the setting starts from the beginning again.
To avoid your warranty becoming invalidated, ensure the water hardness level is correctly programmed.
Example:
Your water hardness level is 22°dH (AU/NZ 4.0 mmol/l).
– The indicator light k flashes 10 times
at intervals (default setting).
– Press the j button six times.
– The indicator light k flashes six times

The indicator light k will flash for the number of times which corresponds to the water hardness level which has been set (see chart).
^
Press the s button to switch the steam ironing system off.
23
Switching on
Switching on the steam ironing system
Press the On/Off button s.
^
The circle around the s button will light up yellow.
The system will start to heat up. Some steam may escape from the iron during the heating-up phase.
Pumping, boiling and knocking noises may be heard during the heating-up phase. These are normal noises that occur during operation.
The indicator light * illuminates when the steam ironing system and the steam function are ready to use.
Depending on the number of operating hours the steam ironing system has been used, it may carry out automatic rinsing (see 'Automatic rinsing') or auto matic descaling (see 'Automatic descaling').
Filling the water container
The indicator light k illuminates if the water container is empty or not fitted in the steam ironing system.
^ Remove the water container.
Hold the water container by the integrated handle, then pull out at the top and lift out to remove.
When removing the water container, some drops of water may come out before the container's valves have completely closed. This can be avoided by taking out the water container slowly.
-
As long as the rinsing or descaling process is running, the steam ironing system cannot be used for ironing.
24
Turn the cap on the back of the water
^
container anti-clockwise and remove.
^ Tilt the water container and fill it with
fresh tap water (approx. 15 °C to 35 °C). This allows it to be filled by taps with not much room underneath. It is not possible to overfill the water container.
Switching on
If the water container is filled and refitted immediately after the indicator light k lights up, no waiting time is required. The indicator light * will indicate that the steam function is ready to use again.
As long as the indicator light k is illuminated, the steam system is not active. The iron, however, may be used.
Environmental tip: You can save energy by removing the water container and ironing without steam. In this case, the steam generator does not need to be heated.
If the steam ironing system is not going to be used for a long time, empty the water container completely.
The water container can be removed and refilled at any time, even in the middle of ironing. The required water level is determined by the amount of ironing to be done.
^
Place the cap in the opening and turn it clockwise as far as it will go.
^
Push the water container back into the appliance.
The indicator light k will go out after a short time.
The time it takes for the steam function to be ready again depends on the how long it took to refill the water container.
25
Switching on
Water quality
Use only fresh tap water in the appliance.
You may also use water that has been prepared with commerical water filters.
With a water hardness level of 14 °dH (AU/NZ 2.5 mmol/l) or higher, you may mix tap water with commerically distilled water at a ratio of 1:1. This will halve the water hardness level. You need to set the appropriate LED flashing rhythm for the halved water hardness level. Example: Mains tap water with a water hardness level of 60 °dH (10.8 mmol/l) has a level of 30 °dH (5.4 mmol/l) when mixed at a ratio of 1:1. According to the water hardness chart, the flashing rhythm of the indicator light k is 7x (see 'Setting the water hardness level').
Do not use distilled water only to fill the water container. This could result in damage to the steam ironing system.
Do not use water from water softener systems. This could result in damage to the steam ironing system.
Do not use condensed water, e.g. from other appliances such as an air-conditioner, tumble dryer etc., or rain water.
Do not use water containing additives, e.g. fragrances, starch etc., or carbonated water.
26
CoolDown function
If the iron is not moved for longer than three minutes, it ceases to heat. After a while, steam is not generated and the indicator light * goes out. When the iron is moved again, it begins heating up automatically. The time it takes to generate steam again will depend on how long the steam generator was switched off.
The indicator light * illuminates when the steam ironing system and the steam function are ready to use.
Do not leave the appliance unsupervised if the iron or steamer is connected. Always disconnect from the mains electricity supply when leaving the steam ironing system unattended.

If you notice any condensate under the ironing board, soak it up with a towel. Sensitive flooring can be damaged by drops of water.
During pauses in ironing, condensate can build up in the steam hose, which is expelled when the steam button is pressed again. To prevent the textiles from becoming too damp, the first burst of steam after a pause should not be directed onto the textiles themselves.
Ironing without steam
If you wish to iron without steam, remove the water container. This stops the steam generator heating up and therefore reduces your energy consumption.
^
If the indicator light k illuminates, fill the water container (see 'Filling the water container').
If you are using the steam function for a long period of time, ensure there is sufficient ventilation in the room as the moisture level in the room may increase dramatically.
Condensate may form in the ironing board if the steam function is used for a long time while ironing.

Ironing
Fan
The fan is controlled using the o, p or n, m buttons.
Only on B 1312:
Pressing the o button activates the steam inflation function.
Pressing the p button activates the steam extraction function.
B 1826 and B 1847:
The n button allows you to switch between the steam extraction and inflation functions. Each press of the button changes the function.
Pressing the m button switches between the two power settings of the fan. Each press of the button changes the setting. Power setting1=1fanisactive Power setting2=2fans are active
Steam extraction function
The steam extraction function helps to penetrate fabrics with steam, avoids the formation of condensate on the ironing board, and fixes fabrics to the ironing board so that they do not easily slip.
Steam inflation function
The steam inflation function creates an air cushion between the fabric and the ironing board, thus helping to prevent seams from being crushed. The benefits are evident when ironing quillings and sequined garments and this function also enables the removal of creases without flattening fabrics too much.
Automatic switching-on/off
The automatic switching-on/off function ensures that the fan starts up precisely at the correct moment when using steam.
The fans are located on the underside of the ironing board.
After a brief run-on time, the fan stops automatically because it is not needed during pauses in ironing, e.g. when clothes are being folded.
Memory function
The memory function remembers the fan direction and power setting that was last used.
33
Ironing
Heated ironing surface
The ironing surface of the ironing board is heated automatically when the steam ironing system is switched on. This function reduces the formation of condensate in the ironing board.
34
Steamer
Steamer (only on B 1847)
The B 1847 steam ironing system is equipped with a steamer, in addition to the conventional iron.
The steamer* can also be used on the B 1312 and B 1826 steam ironing systems (*optional accessory).
The steamer a makes it easier to smooth out creases in hanging items, e.g. dresses, jackets. It is supplied with a removable brush attachment b which helps to lift fibres in fabrics.
The steamer is lighter than the iron. Nor does it have a hot sole plate, therefore avoiding the risk of causing shiny patches on fabrics due to inadvertent contact.
The steamer can even be used when the ironing board has been dismantled.
The steamer can be connected to the steam ironing system via the steam connection socket.
Take the steamer out of the storage

connection socket on the tower. Push the sliding switch on the steam hose towards the back. When disconnecting the hose, make sure to pull on the plug, not the hose.
Plug the steamer's hose into the
^
steam connection socket. Pull back the sliding switch on the plug of the hose and release it after plugging in.
You can exchange the iron and the steamer at any time while ironing. You do not need to switch off the steam ironing system to do this.
After switching between the iron and the steamer, there is a short waiting period before steam can be used again. This ensures that either the iron or the steamer has heated up sufficiently.
The steamer is ready to use when the indicator light * illuminates on the tower.

The distance maintained between the steamer and fabrics is dependent upon the delicateness of the material, and can vary from fabric to fabric. Always test first on an inconspicuous part of the fabric.
During pauses in steaming, condensate can build up in the steam hose, which is expelled when the steam button is pressed again. To prevent the textiles from becoming too damp, the first burst of steam after a pause should not be directed onto the textiles themselves.
The release of steam from the steamer is controlled by the a button on the back of the steamer.
To activate short bursts of steam:
^
Press the button briefly and then release it.
To activate continuous steam:
^
Press and hold the button for the required duration.

Never store the iron or the steamer while they are still plugged in.
If the steam ironing system is not going to be used for a long time, empty the water container completely.
^
Disconnect the iron or steamer from its connection socket on the tower. Push the sliding switch on the steam hose away from the socket. When disconnecting the hose, make sure to pull on the plug, not the hose. Be careful as the plug may still be warm directly after using the iron or steamer.
A few drops of water may escape from the steam hose when it is removed.
^
The FashionMaster can now be moved to its storage location.
Do not store the FashionMaster in rooms susceptible to frosting, as frozen water in the water container, steam generator and steam hose may cause damage to the appliance.
41
Cleaning and care
Automatic rinsing
Automatic rinsing cleans the steam generator of mineral deposits from vaporised water.
After water throughput of approx. 3 litres, the water in the steam generator is drained into the residual water drawer the next time the appliance is switched on.
The rinsing process lasts for a few minutes. You will recognise the rinsing process has been activated after switching on when the indicator light on the iron does not illuminate, the iron does not heat up and steam cannot be used. Water is drained into the residual water drawer. While it is doing this, some steam may be released and burbling noises can be heard. No other function can be used while the rinsing process is running. Only after automatic rinsing has finished is the steam ironing system ready to use again.
Preparing the rinsing process
42
^ Adjust the steam ironing system to its highest working
position (see 'Height adjustment') so that the residual water drawer can be removed later.
^
If the indicator light k illuminates after switching on the appliance, you need to fill the water container (see 'Filling the water container').
^
If the indicator light 2 illuminates after switching on, empty and refit the residual water drawer.
Rinsing process
The contents of the steam generator are drained into the residual water drawer. Some steam is released and burbling noises can be heard.
The indicator light 2 lights up.
Emptying the residual water drawer
The residual water drawer may be warm after rinsing.
Remove the residual water drawer when prompted by the indicator light 2.
Cleaning and care
^
Remove the drawer, empty, clean and dry it.
The residual water drawer can be cleaned in a dishwasher or by hand with a solution of warm water and washing-up liquid.
43
Cleaning and care
Ensure that the metal contacts at the top of the residual water drawer are clean and dry. It is via these contacts that the appliance is informed when the residual water drawer is full or fitted in the appliance. If the contacts are wet or dirty, this information is not transmitted.
Completing the rinsing process
Wait for approx. 20 seconds before refitting the drawer in
^
the appliance.
The indicator light 2 goes out. After heating up, the steam ironing system is ready to use again. The steam function cannot be used until the residual water drawer is refitted. When the indicator light * illuminates, the steam ironing system is ready to use again.
44
Automatic descaling
To ensure trouble-free operation of the steam ironing system, limescale deposits need to be removed regularly. To make this easier, the appliance features an automatic descaling function.
The need to descale is dependent upon the water hardness level set. The descaling intervals are shorter for hard water than for soft water.
Only use the Miele descaling tablets supplied with the appliance. They have been specially developed for the Miele steam ironing system to optimise the descaling process. Other descaling tablets may damage the appliance.
One tablet is required for each descaling process.
More descaling tablets can be ordered directly from Miele or online at www.miele-shop.com (depending on country).
The iron or the steamer must not be connected when the appliance is being descaled. You do not need to supervise the appliance during the descaling process.
Cleaning and care
45
Cleaning and care
Reminder to descale
If two operating hours remain until the appliance must be descaled, the indicator light k begins to flash red. The less time remains until descaling, the faster the indicator light flashes, until it finally lights up constantly.
During the time between which the indicator light k begins to flash and lights up constantly, the descaling process can be started by pressing the j button.
As soon as the indicator light k lights up constantly, the remaining operating hours have expired. You may finish what you are ironing, but descaling will need to be carried out the next time the appliance is switched on. Otherwise, ironing will not be possible.
The residual water drawer can become warm during the descaling process. Remove and empty the drawer only after being prompted to do so by the indicator light 2. Otherwise, the hot water may cause injury and/or damage to property if spilled. To prevent the residual water drawer from being removed inadvertently, lower the steam ironing system to its lowest working position (see 'Height adjustment'). To remove the residual water drawer, the steam ironing system must be raised to its highest working position.
46
The descaling process can be interrupted by switching off the appliance with the s button. After switching the appliance on again, the descaling process will continue from the point at which it was interrupted.
Cleaning and care
The indicator lights in the control panel will guide you through the descaling process. Follow the indicator light prompts, e.g. 2 empty the residual water drawer, k fill the water container etc.
The entire descaling process takes approx. 90 minutes. Carry out the necessary actions only when prompted to do so by the indicator lights. You will need to be present at approx. 20 minutes and a further 60 minutes after starting the descaling process. The steam ironing system can be unattended for the remainder of the descaling process.
It is best to begin the descaling process when the appliance is cool and directly after switching on. This will avoid a waiting time of up to three hours if the appliance needs to cool down.
47
Cleaning and care
Preparing the descaling process
The descaling process can be started when the indicator light k flashes red or lights up constantly.
^ Unplug the steam hose from the steam connection socket.

Electrical connection
Electrical connection
All electrical work should be carried out by a suitably qualified and competent person in strict accordance with current local and national safety regulations.
Before connecting the appliance, make sure that the connection data on the data plate (voltage and rated load) matches the mains electricity supply. If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician.
The data plate is located in the tower, behind the water container.
This appliance is supplied with a mains cable and moulded plug ready for connection to a AC single phase 220-240 V 50-60 Hz supply.
The voltage and frequency are given on the data plate, located in the tower behind the water container. Please ensure these match the household mains supply, and contact a qualified electrician if in doubt. The fuse rating is quoted on the plug.
If the electrical connection cable is faulty this must only be replaced by a suitably qualified and competent person.
The appliance must not be connected to the inverter of an autonomous power supply, e.g. a solar power system. When switching the appliance on, a surge in the power could trigger the safety cut-out mechanism. This could damage the electronic unit.
The appliance must not be used with so-called energy saving devices. These reduce the energy supply to the appliance which could then become too warm.
If mains connection cable is damaged, it must be replaced with a Miele cable by a Miele approved service technician only.
WARNING THIS APPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHED
Connection should bi made via a suitable switched socket which is easily accessible. For extra saftey is advisable to install a suitable residual current device (RCD).
Do not connect the appliance to the mains electricity supply by a extension lead or a plug adapter. Extension leads do not gurantee the required safety of ther appliance (e.g. danger of overheating).
For extra safety and protection we recommend connecting the appliance via a 30 mA residual current device (RCD).
