When the safety clutch responds, switch off the
machine immediately!
Do not touch the rotating tool!
Remove chips and similar material only with the
machine at standstill.
Caution must be exercised when driving screws
into hard materials (driving screws with metric or
imperial threads into steel)! The screw head may
break or a high reverse torque may build up on
the handle.
Work only with the additional handle correctly
installed.
Always hold the machine with both hands using
the handles provided, stand securely and
concentrate.
A damaged or cracked side handle must be
replaced. Never operate a machine with a
defective side handle.
The thread for screwing in the additional handle

Protect battery packs from water and moisture!
Never use faulty or deformed battery packs!
Do not expose battery packs to naked flame!
Do not open battery packs!
Do not touch or short-circuit battery packs!
If battery fluid from NiCd, NiMH or Li-ion battery
packs leaks out and comes into contact with the
skin, rinse the affected area thoroughly with
water. If battery fluid leaks out and comes into

5Special Product Features
• High performance with a light weight and
perfect ergonomics
• Optimised centre of gravity
• Metabo S-automatic safety clutch:
If the tool jams or catches, the power supply to
the motor is restricted. Due to the strong force
which can arise, always hold the machine with
both hands using the handles provided, stand
securely and concentrate.
• Carrying strap for safe work on scaffolding
• High system flexibility thanks to the capacity to
combine battery chargers and battery packs
(within a voltage class)
• With "AIR COOLED" battery packs
• Additional VibraTech handle for vibration
damping
6Assembly
6.1Assembly of additional handle
For safety reasons, always use the
additional handle (3) supplied.
Insert the additional handle (3) in the thread (2) (on
the left or right machine side) and tighten firmly.

6.2Carrying strap
If necessary, hang the hook on the Metabo
carrying strap (10) on the eyelet (8). Set the
carrying strap (10) to the desired length.
Carrying:
ENGLISH
To prevent unintentional start-up, move
rotation selector switch (7) to
the
centre position (transporting safety
device).
Never carry with a tool inserted.
The machine must only be carried with
the Metabo carrying strap (10) across
chest and back (illustration a, page 3).
Hold the machine steady.
The machine must NOT be carried with
the carrying strap (10) around your neck
(illustration b, page 3).
7Operation
Charge the battery pack before use.
The battery pack reaches its full capacity only
after being charged and discharged 5 times
(charge cycles).
The maximum number of charge cycles can
only reached if an exhaustive discharge of the
battery pack is avoided. If performance diminishes, recharge the battery pack.
Store NiMH battery packs when charged and
recharge after 6 months at the latest.
Li-Ion battery packs (18 V)
have a capacity and signal display:
Press battery pack release button (9) and take out
battery pack (11).
Inserting:
Insert battery pack (11) until it engages.
7.2Setting the direction of rotation, engaging the transporting safety device
(switch-on lock)
Do not activate rotation selector switch
(7) unless the motor has completely
stopped!
Actuate the rotational direction switch (direction of
rotation setting, transporting safety device).
See page 3 (please unfold).

7.3Switching On and Off
To start the machine, press the trigger switch (6).
The speed can be changed using the trigger
switch.
7.4Operating mode selection
Select the desired operating mode by turning the
switch button (4). To turn, push in the lock (5).
Drilling
Hammer drilling
- Press the button and the charge level is
displayed by the LEDs.
- If one LED is flashing, the battery pack is
almost flat and must be recharged.
- If all LEDs are flashing, the electronic system
has switched off the battery pack (selfprotection mode). The battery pack is either
flat (the electronic system protects the
battery pack against exhaustive discharge),
or has become overloaded or too warm
during operation (temperature monitoring).
To continue using the battery pack: Press
the button or insert the battery pack into the
charger, which is ready for use. (Rapid
cooling is possible in the "AIR COOLED"
battery charger.)

Avoid levering with the machine when a
drill bit is fitted.
7.5Tool change with SDS chuck
Before fitting, clean tool shank and
apply special grease (accessories order
no. 6.31800)!
Use only SDS-Plus tools.
Inserting the tool:
Turn the tool while inserting until it locks into
place. The tool is automatically locked.
17026813_0907 BHA 18 NAFTA.book Seite 9 Dienstag, 9. Oktober 2007 1:20 13
Removing the tool:
Turn tool lock (1) in direction indicated by arrow
(a) and remove tool (b).
8Tips and Tricks
Only moderate pressure is required for hammer
drilling. Applying a high degree of pressure does
not increase performance.
When drilling deep holes, remove the drill bit periodically from the hole to remove dust.
When drilling in tiles and other brittle materials:
Set the operating mode to "Drilling".
