Overview

Use the application to create and manage bar code templates to specify the location and type of bar code that users frequently scan. Other applications (such as Solution Composer) can access these templates to reduce the time it takes to scan and identify bar codes on a document.
This document provides instructions on how to use and troubleshoot the application.

Optimizing bar code detection

Tips on scanning bar codes
When scanning one-dimensional bar codes, position them horizontally to match the linear scaling of the
bars.
If patterns of text and specks are detected erroneously as bar codes, then you can ignore those areas or
rescan the page.
If the bar code is skewed on the page, then position the page so that the bar code is aligned horizontally
or vertically with the scanner.
Tips on designing bar codes
Increase the bar code font size to a more readable size.
Know the type, resolution, orientation, placement, and number of bar codes on a document.
Establish a clear area around the bar code to prevent patterns of text and specks from appearing as bar
codes.
Make sure that there is enough contrast between the bar code and the color of the material that you are
printing on.
Make sure that asterisks appear before and after the bar code characters. Asterisks are used as start and
stop characters for most linear bar codes.

2 From the home screen, touch Bar Code Discovery > Add Template.
3 Do either of the following:
Locate bar codes automatically
To u ch Automatically > Scan.
Notes:
This option searches only for the following bar code types: Code 128, Code 39, EAN13, EAN‑8,
UPCE, Data Matrix, and PDF 417.
This option recognizes bar code types on A3‑ and legalsize paper. If you are not using an A3 or
legalsize paper, or if the bar code cannot be recognized automatically, then locate bar codes manually.
Locate bar codes manually
a To u ch Manually. b Select the paper size and orientation. c To u c h Scan. d From the scan preview, select one or more areas where the bar code appears. e Do either of the following:
If you know the bar code type, then touch Specific Bar Code Types, and then select the type from
the list.
If you do not know the bar code type, then touch All Bar Code Types.
f To u ch Next.
4 Customize the bar code template. You can type a bar code name, set a delimiter, or assign field names.
Notes:
Pi is the only special character that you can use.
A delimiter is a character that separates pieces of information within bar codes, such as
names.
To set a delimiter and assign field names, set Multiple Fields to On.
5 To u ch Create Template, and then type a unique template name.

Troubleshooting

Cannot recognize bar codes

Try one or more of the following:

Make sure that the bar code type is supported

For more information, see “Supported bar code types” on page 4.

Make sure that the bar code is selected on the scan preview

If you select only a part of the bar code, then it may be recognized.

Make sure that the bar code is aligned horizontally or vertically with the scanner

Locate bar codes manually

The application can automatically recognize bar code types on A3 and legalsize paper only. For more information, see
