Introduction
Supplemental sheet for Instructions for Use for IP C and IP S V1.9 RevD - 05/2013
The instruments manufactured by Leica Biosystems Nussloch GmbH are subject to a continuous improvement process to enable our customers use our instruments safely and efficiently.
We are always striving to improve our products and their handling. Therefore, we revised the locking mechanism for the ink cartridge and the transport tank.
The handling of the new locking mechanism is explained in the following information for use for the
IP S printer.

The following description explains the different handling of the locking mechanism in relation to exchanging the transport tank or the ink cartridge. The exchange is described in the Chap. "4.9 Exchanging the
cartridge" and "6.4 Storing the printer". All other descriptions and tasks in the chapters mentioned remain
unaffected by the different handling.

In the factory condition, a transport tank
is inserted into the printer (refer also to
Chapter 4.9 of the Instructions for Use). This
must be replaced with an ink cartridge before
starting up the printer (see Standard Delivery). Also refer to Chapter 4 Instrument Setup
in the Instructions for Use.
For transport or when the printer is to be disconnected
from the power for long periods (from more than 24 h up to
six months), a transport tank has to be inserted. To do so,
proceed as follows:
• Open the door on the left side of the printer and press
the red retaining bracket (1, Fig. 1) down and pull the
ink cartridge out (2, Fig. 1) approx. 30 mm until the "Ink Empty" LED lights up.
• Take the red protective cap (3, Fig. 1) out of the recess
in the ink cartridge and screw it to the cartridge. Then
remove the ink cartridge.
• Take the transport tank out of the delivery carton, remove
the protective foil and insert the tank until it is about half
way into the cartridge slot (Fig. 2).
• Loosen the red protective cap (85, Fig. 2) by one turn,
then push the tank in all the way repeating 2 or 3 times
to break through the seals.
• Push in the transport tank all the way and check that the
red retaining bracket (1, Fig. 1) is positioned correctly.
• Unscrew the red protective cap (85, Fig. 2) and place it
in the recess provided for the cap in the tank (63, Fig. 2).
• Mark one of the two boxes on the front of the tank to
ensure that the transport tank is used only twice.
• Close the door on the left side of the printer.
→
• The "Ink Empty" goes out, and "88" appears in the dis-
play.
• Press CLEAN to clean the print head (duration: approx.
3.5 min.) - "00" appears in the display. The display will go
→
out when the cleaning process is complete.
• Open the hood then press the CLEAN and LOADED but-
tons at the same time.
• Pressing those buttons moves the print head up and away
+
from the location plate (70, Fig. 4+8, Fig. 3).
• Push the lever (69, Fig. 3) up to allow removal of the
location plate.

Inserting the transport tank (continued)
• Remove the red location plate (70, Fig. 4+8) - clean it using alcohol (95 %-100 %).
• Clean the print head with alcohol (95 %-100 %) and the provided cleaning swabs (Fig. 5). This involves push-
ing the swab underneath the print head, raising it with slight pressure (onto the print head) and moving from
the bottom right to the top left (along the sealing lip). Turn the swab slightly after each upward movement.
• Then push in the new black transport location plate (73, Fig. 8) as far as it will go.
• Push the small lever (69, Fig. 3) back down to secure the transport location plate.
• Press any button to close the print head.
If pressing a button does not end the replacement of the exchange plate, the printer automatically closes the print head after 2.5 min. A signal sounds 30 s before it automatically closes and a countdown
appears on the display. In order to avoid damage to the print head, avoid inserting the transport location
plate at this time; instead wait until the print head closes and repeat the operation to insert the transport location plate.
Fig. 4
• Close the printer hood.
• Retighten the red cap (85, Fig.2) on the transport tank
and close the door on the side of the printer.
70
Switch off the printer and disconnect the
power to prevent damage to the print head!
In order to use the printer again, the transport plate has to be removed and a new
exchange plate has to be inserted. For inserting an ink cartridge, refer to the "Quick
instructions" on the front of the device.

Removing the used ink cartridge
In this manual, an example of how to insert the
ink cartridge is shown using the IP S printer.
This also applies to the IP C printer.
The ink cartridge has to be replaced after
