SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
SHORT CORD INSTRUCTIONS
A. We do not recommend using an extension cord with this device.
B. If an extension cord is absolutely necessary :
1 - The marked electrical rating of the extension cord should be at
least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance.
2 - To reduce the risk of injury, do not drape cord over the counter
top or table top where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over unintentionally.
C. This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than other).
To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug is intended to fit into a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to modify the plug in any way.

BEFORE USING FOR THE FIRST TIME
Remove all packaging. Follow the steps below to run a first brew cycle to rinse the system. Use a full tank of water and do not use coffee or coffee filter.
MAKING COFFEE
Fill the water tank with cold water taking careful note of the number of cups. Use filtered water if possible.
Cups are measured as 5 oz. each. The carafe is marked with cup measurements and the water tank has dual water windows with graduated markings on each side of the machine.
Brewing delicious coffee is an art and a science. Your machine is designed to deliver the ultimate result in the cup, with that result being highly dependent on 4 basic factors : the water, the coffee, the ratio and the grind. Read more about these important factors on the following pages.
BREWING COFFEE
English
Add paper or permanent filter to the brew basket.
Krups original accessories: #4 paper filters 100-pack. Item # 983 #4 size gold tone filter. Item # 049
Add ground coffee to the basket. Measure one rounded coffee scoop per 5 oz. cup of water. This simple step is critical to the taste of your brewed coffee. See your brewing guide on page 9 for more detail.
Close the lid and insert the carafe into the machine.
Be sure the carafe sits straight and level on the heating plate before starting the brew cycle. *NOTE : If you use the carafe to fill the tank with cold water rinse the
carafe with hot water before starting the brew cycle. This will help raise the temperature of the coffee in the carafe.
English
For immediate brewing, press the On/Off button and the brew cycle will begin.
DURING THE BREW CYCLE STEAM RISES FROM THE TOP OF THE MACH INE. BE CAREFUL TO KEEP HANDS AWAY FROM THIS AREA UNTIL AFTER TH E BREW CYCLE IS COMPLETED.
!
The On/Off button will glow red while the machine is brewing and stay lighted for 2 hours while the coffee is kept warm on the heating plate.
You can turn the machine off at any time by pressing the On/Off button again.
Auto-Off Function :
The heating plate will maintain the temperature in the carafe for up to 2 hours after which the machine shuts off automatically. This is for safety and convenience. For best results brew only as much coffee as you will drink within 30-60 minutes, or transfer the coffee to a thermal carafe immediately after brewing. The machine will automatically turn off after 2 hours. This setting is not adjustable.
Pause and Serve Feature :
You can remove the carafe during the brew cycles to pour an early cup. Keep in mind that this will change the taste you would normally get from a full pot in a complete cycle. Be sure to replace the carafe quickly to avoid overflow during the brew cycle.

CLEANING
USING THE PROGRAMMABLE TIMER
-- Clock / Timer available only on specific models --
Setting the Clock :
The clock must be set to the correct time before using the programmable brewing function. To set the clock press the Hours button (H) and the Minutes button (Min). The clock shows AM or PM near the bottom of the display.
Programming the timer :
Press the Program button (PROG). The On/Off button will blink with a blue light. You can only program the start time while the On/Off button is blinking with blue light. If the function becomes inactive while you are entering the time press program (Prog) to reactivate this function. When the programmed start time is set the machine will validate automatically after 5 seconds and shut-off.
To activate the timer :
Press the AUTO button and the On/off button will show a solid blue light. Brewing will not begin until the time that was set in the Program function (above).
Be sure to prepare the machine for a brew cycle with water in the tank, coffee in the brew basket and carafe securely in place.
At the programmed time the machine will automatically turn on and start a brew cycle. The On/Off button will glow red while brewing.
The preset time is retained in memory so subsequent automatic brew cycles for the same preset time can be activated by simply pressing the Auto button.
Used ground coffee and the paper filter can be disposed in the trash or compost. Do this soon after brewing. If possible do not let wet coffee sit in the machine overnight.
The filter basket holder has a handle to allow easy disposal of the grounds.
The filter basket holder should be cleaned regularly with soap and water.
English
DESCALING
Your coffee machine should be descaled periodically or whenever the brew cycle has slowed noticeably. Normally it should not take more than 10 minutes to brew a full pot. It is recommended to descale at least every 3 months using a descaling solution designed for use in coffee machines.
Visit Krups website www.Krupsonlinestore.com for approved descaling products.
Before descaling remove the permanent filter (if applicable) from the brew basket. Do not put ground coffee in the filter basket.
Fill the water tank, add the descaling powder to the water and stir it to dissolve the powder.
Press ON and let 1/2 the water run through and into the carafe, then turn the machine off.
Let the solution sit in the machine for 20-30 minutes.
Turn the machine ON again and let the rest of the water run through.
Discard the water and run another cycle with clean water to rinse the system.
The warranty excludes coffee machines which have stopped working or do not work properly due to lack of descaling.

Choose your beans wisely. It is best to use premium whole beans from a trusted brand or roaster. Arabica beans provide the best flavors and have less caffeine and while Robusta beans are easier to grow and less expensive, they have less flavor and higher caffeine content. Robusta beans are sometimes used in blends to add a particular bitterness to the brew. Beans can be roasted very lightly to provide a smooth aromatic taste or roasted dark to provide stronger flavors, and anywhere in between. A good roaster will be able to describe the flavors that the beans will impart to your brewed coffee.
Note: Experiment with different beans and different roasts to identify one or several that suit your tastes.
THE COFFEE
COFFEE BREWING GUIDE
THE RATIO
The amount of ground coffee must be carefully measured against the volume of water for each brew cycle. It is important to use enough coffee to avoid over extraction. A small amount of coffee would be overwhelmed by a large volume of hot water. The carafe measures “cups” as 5 oz each. Maximum capacity is slightly more than 50 oz total water volume before brewing. The volume of brewed coffee will be slightly less because the ground coffee will absorb a certain amount. Krups recommends using 7 grams of ground coffee per 5 oz cup of water. 7 grams can be measured in one rounded tablespoon. If the resulting brew seems too strong you can adjust by using slightly less ground coffee. If you prefer a much lighter taste it is best to brew at the recommanded ratio and dilute the resulting brew with a measure of hot water. This allows the best flavor to be extracted from the beans while avoiding over extraction of too small an amount of ground coffee.
THE WATER
The water is a critical factor in the taste of your brewed coffee. Filtered water is normally the best choice to help avoid the minerals and chlorine that can be found in municipal water systems. However if your water tastes good then it should be good for your coffee. Never pour milk, prepared coffee, tea, etc. into water tank.
THE GRIND
The method of grinding and the level of fineness of the grind have a significant impact on the resulting taste of the brewed coffee. Ideally you should grind fresh roasted whole beans just before brewing. Be aware that this machine is set to brew the most common grinds found on store shelves. Typically preground coffees are of a similar size, medium-coarse. A very fine grind will produce much stronger flavors but risks becoming extracted during the brew cycle producing a more bitter taste. You can learn more about coffee grinding and about Krups range of grinders at our website www.krupsusa.com
