TECHNICAL BULLETIN
HP4100 Firmware Revision Provides Accurate Estimated Pages Remaining Values
HP has recently revised the engine firmware on HP4100 printers. The revision corrected a major flaw in the Supply Status Page information. The Estimated Pages Remaining field value now starts at HP's rated page yield based on the HP part number on the cartridge smartchip. Static Control's smartek
chip contains the C8061X part number corre-
sponding to the 10,000 page rated yield cartridge. When initially installing an aftermarket cartridge with a smartek
chip into a HP4100 printer with the latest firmware, a value of 10,000 pages will appear in the Estimated Pages Remaining field.
HP4100 printers with prior engine firmware versions exhibited wildly varying, and highly inaccurate, Estimated Pages Remaining values. In some cases it could start as low as a few thousand pages and sometimes could be thousands of pages higher than the 10,000 page rated yield. This was a printer firmware issue, not a chip issue. The variations in the Estimated Pages Remaining values were the same for both OEM chips and the smartek
chip.
A dedicated 8061A version of the smartek
chip will be required in order to provide an accurate Estimated Pages
Remaining value for the 6,000 page, low-yield cartridge version. The new 8061A version of the smartek
chip is
currently available.
The printer firmware issues affecting the Supply Status Page information was corrected in the HP4100MFP released in March of this year. We identified this change at that time and consequently all production volumes of the smartek
HP4100 chip have been coded with the 8061X cartridge part number so that the smartek
chip would function correctly with the HP4100MFP. Consequently, there are no issues or requirement to upgrade our current smartek
chip.
The newest version of the HP4100 printer firmware is 01.027.2. The firmware version is shown on the Configuration Page, accessible either through the printer control panel or the embedded webserver. HP has frequently revised this firmware, but this is the first instance we have identified that had an impact on the Supplies Status Page information or its interplay with the cartridge chip. Upgrading a HP4100 printer to the newest firmware requires installation of a replacement DIMM available from HP. The printer firmware is not software upgradeable, unlike the JetDirect
®
network
interface card. HP labels the part as a ROC DIMM, the part number is C4168-67904, and HP's list price is $74.00.
