Key components of Compaq’s Enterprise Network Storage Architecture (ENSA), the Compaq StorageWorks Fibre
Channel Storage Switch 8 and Fibre Channel Storage Switch 16 are high-performance, scalable switch fabrics
designed for creating SANs with Compaq StorageWorks RAID Array 8000 and ESA 12000 storage subsystems.
Major benefits of these switch fabrics include:
• Eight (Fibre Channel Switch 8) or 16 (Fibre Channel Switch 16) 1 Gb/s non-blocking Fibre Channel connections
for high data throughput
• Switch to switch connectivity over distances of up to 10 kilometers between two switches in support of

Configuration versatility
Single type of interface module automatically identifies a connection's operating mode as either a device or another

Hot pluggable, industry-standard GBICs (Gigabit Interface Converter)
• Short-wave GBIC supports distances up to 500 meters between server and switch, and between storage
subsystem and switch using multi-mode fiber optic cable.
• Long-wave GBIC supports distances up to 10 kilometers between switches using single-mode fiber optic cable.

• Data path in hardware results in low end-to-end latency time, thus increasing throughput.
• Cut-through frame forwarding moves frame traffic efficiently without having to receive the complete frame first.
• In-order delivery of data frames guarantees that frames are delivered to a destination in the same order as
received by the switch from the originator.
• Flexible switch buffering stores a data frame for only as long as is absolutely necessary, moving data faster and
more efficiently through the SAN.
Reliable SAN services
Services are distributed throughout the SAN to prevent an individual failure from stopping overall operations.
Services are performed automatically, regardless of network complexity and are transparent to the user.
• Simple Name Service – discovers Fabric-connected devices, and registers or unregisters the device information
when a connection changes
• Registered State Change Notification – dynamic detection of changes in configuration and port status
• Multicast Service (Alias Server) – sends a single data copy simultaneously to group members
Easy switch management
Administrative functions take place from an existing LAN/WAN-based system or locally in the SAN itself. Supported
management methods include:
• SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)
• Telnet
• Web enabled management tools via StorageWorks Command Console
• Telnet command subset via switch front panel
