Using InSync
Introducing InSync
Regardless of how reliable any broadcast device is, for mission-critical applications
like broadcast, many facilities require full redundancy in their play-to-air servers.
Disk mirroring, normally the responsibility of the controlling application, can add
significantly to the complexity of the application. With InSync, mirroring is
accomplish ed within the Profile syste m. InSync en sures that the contents of two
systems are maintained as a mirrored pair. In the event of a failure the user routes
control of replay functi on to the slave system, which InSy nc keeps synchronized with
the master.
InSync can also provi de bi-directio nal mirrorin g between two Profi le systems. In this
mode InSync allows each s ystem to opera te as a master system while serving as slav e
to the other.
Profile System requirements
• InSync 3.0 is supported on these Profile systems:
SystemProfile Software
PVS1000V5.2 or later
PVS1100V5.2 or later
PVS2000V5.2 or later
PVS3000V5.4 or later
Not supported on PDR.
• Slave system must be configured to have the same number and type of active
channels (channels used for record and play) as the master system.
• Fibre Channel or Ethernet video network installed and configured, suc h that Media
Manager can make transfers between the Profile XPs. For information about
configuring a network, see the Profile XP System Guide.
• InSync must be installed on the master Profile XP. It can also be installed on the
slave Profile XP, but it should not be run simultaneously on both.
• PortServer must be running on the slave Profile XP. If you use bi-directional
mirroring, PortServer must be running on both the master and slave Profile XPs.
For information about starting or checking PortServer, see the Profile XP System Guide.
• In a Open SAN environment, you must use InSync on only one of the Profile XP
Media Platforms attached to the shared storage.
requirement
NOTE: Grass Valley recommends that the storage capacity of the master and slave
Profile XPs be the same. If the capacity of th e slave unit is smal ler, you must caref ully
manage the backup of material to avoid exceeding the storage capacity of the slave
Profile XP. Exceeding the capacity of the slave Profile XP can result in the loss of
backup material.

Using InSync
Important information about using InSync
Installing InSync
These are some constraints that you must be aware of when using InSync.
• Loop recording cannot be used with InSync.
• Clips of pre-defined length, such a s those created by BVW Insert Edit, do not back
up correctly wi th some versions of system softwar e. To obtain syste m software that
supports these operations, please contact Grass Valley Product Support (see page
4).
• When you are using the bi-direct ional mirroring mode you must not create, and you
must not allow an automation program to create, a clip with the same name in the
same directory at the same time on both units. Doing so creat es contention that can
result in the loss of one of the clips created.
• When you are using t he bi-directional mirroring mode you must not edit the same
clip in the same directory at the same time on both units. Doing so results in the
loss of edits to the clip closed first.
The first step to installin g InSync is to run the Setup program on the InSync
CD-ROM. You must install InSync on one of the Profile XPs (the master) that you
will use. You might want to install InSync on the slave Profile XP as well as the
master. Having InSync installed and ready to run can be convenient if you need to
operate the sla ve Profile XP as master and a ssign a new s lave to maintai n redundancy.
To install InSync you must be logged on as Administrator. For information about
logging on as Administrator, see the Profile XP System Guide.
1. Insert the CD-ROM into the drive on the Profile XP you’ve chosen to be master.
Choose

bottom of the InSync application window, displays a summary of the configuration
currently loaded. Depending on the current configuration, synchronization might

Setting master and slave Profile XPs
You must define a master Pr ofile XP and a slave Profile XP before any
synchronization takes place. The Profile XPs must meet requirements as in “Profile

About synchronization
There are two phases of synchronization, as follows:

In preparation for initial synchronization, InSync compares the clips on both the
master and slave. The following conditions are detected:
• Clips present on one system but not on the other
• Clips present on both systems
Based on these conditions, InSync runs the initial synchronization. The
synchronization behavior is determined by the currently loaded configuration.
Ongoing synchronization — This is the primary sy nchroni za tion pro cess th at runs on
a regular basis for as long as the InSync application remains open. I t runs only after
the initial s ynchronization is complete and is triggered according to the
synchronization rules in the currently loaded configuration. In preparation for an

currently loaded configuration.

InSync is intended t o be used primar ily as an automat ic synchroniz ation tool that runs

are designed for this use, as follows:

• In the manual synchronization mode, click the Start button to start a

• In any synchronizat ion mode you can pa use a currently running synchronizat ion by
clicking the Pause but ton . When you do so, the currentl y dupl i cat ing task, if

time in the configuration, and automatically starts synchronization when the
time arrives.
Managing individual synchronization tasks
Individual synchro nization tasks are li sted as a queue in the synch ronizati on list. The
following procedures explain how you can manage the task s as they appear i n the li st.
About task blocks
Individual tasks in the list can be re lated such that the y form task blocks. Fo r example,
when a task uses a clip which is a result of an earlier copy or rename task, these two
tasks are re lated. Multiple tasks can be inter-related in this way to form a task block.
As you manage individual t asks, you can do so only t o the extent that you do n ot break
task block relationships. For example, if you are moving a task up or down the list,
you might find that it will not move past a related task if it creates an illogical
sequence, such as renaming a clip after it has been deleted. In this case you need to
move the related tasks as well and keep the task block intact.
Re-arranging the order of synchronization tasks
You can move tasks up or down the queue as follows:
1. Right-click a task in the synchronization list.
2. On the pop-up menu, select Up or Down. This moves the task one row in the
direction selected. Repeat this step until the task is in the required position.
Excluding synchronization tasks
You can individually exc lud e a tas k so tha t it i s not p rocess ed. Th is cau ses InS ync to
skip the excluded task as it works down through the synchronization queue.
To exclude a task, do the following:
1. Right-click a task in the synchronization list for which the value in the Exclude
column is N. N is the value for a normally included task.

Changing the slave Profile XP to be master
If you must remove the master Profile XP (call it Unit A) from service and place the
slave Profile XP (call it Unit B) on line, and you want to maintain redundancy, you
must reassign Profile XP B to be master and assign a different Profile XP (call it Unit
C) as slave. You can do this by prepari ng a config uration fi le in adva nce, so that you
can quickly load it should the need arise, or you can simply change the current
configuration. In either case, use the following procedure to create the required
configuration.
To change the designation of Profile XP B from slave to master, do the following:
1. Install InSync on Profile XP B (if it is not already installed). Follow the installation
instructio ns given earlier.
2. On Profile XP B, set Profile XP B as master and Profile XP C as slave.
