GETTING STARTED

CHARGING THE KARMA BATTERY AND THE CONTROLLER

The Karma battery powers both Karma and a GoPro camera.

1. Remove the battery from Karma.

2. Connect the components to the charger.

3. Connect the charger to a wall outlet. The battery status lights on the battery and the controller indicate the charge level.

NOTICE: Using a battery charger other than the Karma charger can damage the Karma battery. Only use chargers marked: Output 0.5V 3A. If you do not know the voltage and current of your charger, use the Karma charger.

CHECKING THE BATTERY LEVEL

Press the Battery Status button.

As the battery is used, one battery status light blinks, then turns off. This pattern continues until all lights are off, indicating that the battery is fully drained.

PRO TIP: Karma lands a utomatically if the batter y become s too low. For more information, see Automatic Safety Landings (page 26).

ASSEMBLING KARMA

1. Insert the battery.

2. Unfold the landing gear and arms.

Note: To close the landing gear, pull the legs toward the back of the drone, then bend them inward.

3. Open the harness and insert a camera (sold separately). The included harness can be used with HERO4 Black, HERO4 Silver, HERO3+, and HERO3 cameras. (A HERO Session harness is sold separately.)

Note: Although the Karma battery powers both the drone and the camera, the camera must contain a battery so that Karma is properly balanced.

4. Securely tighten the propellers. Propellers are color-coded to match the correct motors.

SETTING UP THE KARMA SYSTEM

The Karm a controller c ontains ever ything you n eed to set up Ka rma and control the drone during f light. In addi tion to flight data and safety info, the controll er contain s an interactive fl ight simulator so you can pra ctice before Karm a leaves the gro und.

1. Power the co ntroller, then power on the drone. The Power button [ ] lights tu rn on. The ori entation lig hts on the arms help you identify th e front and bac k of the drone dur ing flight. Th e lights on the front are gre en and those on the back are re d.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your system and learn

how to fly.

PRO TIP: You can practice f lying at any tim e with the flight simulator on the controller. From the Home sc reen, tap Lea rn, then tap Pr actice Flying.

KARMA AND YOUR HERO CAMERA

The control ler directs b oth Karma an d your HERO cam era, so the camera b uttons are dis abled whe n you use your camera with the drone. In additi on, the came ra’s wireless is turned off, the camera uses Kar ma’s battery, and a drone icon [ICON] appe ars on the camera status sc reen.

SOFTWARE UPGRADES

To get the latest features a nd best pe rformanc e from your Kar ma compon ents, make sure you are using th e most current software. The controlle r automatic ally notifies you if a software up grade is available and provid es instructi ons about h ow to download an d install it.

PRE-FLIGHT CHECKLIST TAKING OFF

Complete these items before every flight:

• Securely tighten the propellers

• Fully extend the landing g ear and arm s

• Be sure the camera stabi lizer is secu rely locked into th e drone

• Check bat tery levels for Karma, the c ontroller, and the camera

• Check the available sp ace on the mi croSD card

• Be sure your flight area is clear of people and obstacles

Before takin g off, be sure to compl ete the items in Pre-Flight Checklist (page 18).

1. Place K arma on flat, f irm ground in a n open area. Point the cam era away from you.

2. Power on Karma a nd the controll er.

3. Wh en the control ler confirm s that Karma i s ready for flig ht, press and hold th e Start/Stop button on the contro ller to start th e motors. The l ight around th e Start/Stop button and the lig ht near the Power but ton on Karma blink green when the GPS sig nal is strong eno ugh for takeoff.

Note: The Karma controller contains antennae that mu st be directed at Karma at all times. If th e connection is l ost, Karma returns to the launch loc ation. For details, see Automatic Safety Landings (page 26).

4. Select one of these options:

• To take off automatically, tap the auto takeof f button on the screen.

• To take off manually, gently push the lef t joystick forward.

5. Use th e joysticks to gui de the drone d uring flight.

PRO TIP: Karma hover s in place whe never you let go of th e joysticks.

WARNING: N ever touch Ka rma while it is i n flight. The propell ers have shar p edges and m ove rapidly an d with force. Do not touch the propellers when Karma is in operation.

1. On the controller, press the Mode/Tag button repeatedly to cycle to the mode that you want. For more i nformation ab out mode s and settings , see the user m anual for yo ur camera at gopro.com/help.

Note: If Karma provides limited support for your HERO camera model, press the Shutter button o n the camera before taking off to capture co ntent from the air. For these camera models, live video preview on the controller is not available.

PRO TIP: For best resu lts, make sma ll adjustm ents when tilting the camera a nd fly slowly. To capture vide o, use 1080p60 Lin ear with Protune on (use defa ults for Protune s ettings).

HILIGHT TAGGING

You can mark sp ecific moments in your vi deo as they happen with HiLight Tags. Hi Light Tags make it ea sy to find the best m oments to share .

To Add HiLight Tags Du ring Recording: On the controller, press the Mode/Tag button.

SHARING YOUR LIVE FLIGHT LANDING KARMA

If you are flyin g Karma with fr iends, they c an watch your live f light on their iOS® or Android™ mobile d evices with the G oPro Pass enger App.

1. From the Hom e screen, ta p Connect, a nd then tap Pa ssenger. This screen di splays the na me and pas sword of your drone.

2. Tap the set ting to turn Pas senger on .

3. Ask your friend to complete these steps:

a. Download th e GoPro Pas senger Ap p from the Appl e App Store or

Google Play to a smartphone/tablet.

b. Open the app an d follow the on-s creen instr uctions to con nect

to the controller.

3. Tap one of these options:

• To let your fri end view your l ive flight, tap Vi ewer.

• To let your fri end view your l ive flight and c ontrol the cam era

stabilizer w hile you fly, tap Co -Pilot.

Note: The GoPro Pas senger App ca nnot control the drone.

AUTOMATICALLY LANDING KARMA

With an autom atic landing, Karma automatical ly flies to the lan ding locatio n and desce nds to the groun d with the press of a b utton. You use the joysticks only to man euver Karm a around obstacles du ring the return flight.

1. Press the L and button [

2. S elect where yo u want Karma to la nd:

• The launch location

• Your current location

• In place

Unless yo u opt to land in pl ace, Karma hovers for a few seconds, moves to an altitude of 66’ (20m), then fli es to the landing location. Note: You can set the al titude for autom atic landi ngs in the Flig ht Settings on the controller.

3. Us e the joysticks to maneuver aro und obstacles durin g the return flight. Whe n Karma reac hes the laun ch locatio n, it hovers for 1 0 seconds before landing.

4. Wh en the prope llers stop, press and hold th e Power button [ ] o n Karma. T he button lig ht turns off when K arma is powe red off.

CANCELLING AN AUTOMATIC LANDING

To cancel an automatic landi ng and rega in full control of Karma, sel ect one of these options:

• To canc el the landi ng and continue flying, p ress the Land button [

• To imme diately land i n place, pre ss and hold th e Land button [ ].

With a manu al landin g, you use the joysticks to control K arma durin g the return flight and guide it to th e ground.

1. Use the joys ticks to guide K arma toward a safe la nding area .

2. Wh en you reach th e landing a rea, gently pu ll the left joystick back until Karm a reaches the ground. The p ropeller s automatically stop when Karma lands.

3. P ress and hol d the Power button [ ] on Karma . The button li ght turns off whe n Karma is powered off.

AUTOMATIC SAFETY LANDINGS

To prevent damage to th e drone and its s urroundin gs, Karma i ncludes these built-in safety landings:

Low Battery Landings

If the Karma battery leve l becomes low during fli ght, Karma automatic ally returns to th e launch lo cation. It is p ossible (altho ugh not advise d) to cancel thi s automatic fl ight and conti nue flying. If the Karma battery then reaches a critical level, the controller notifies you and Karm a immedia tely lands in p lace. Criti cal batter y level occur s if the battery does not conta in enough p ower to return Karm a to the launch location.

Lost Connection Landing

If the controller loses connection to Karma for more than ten seconds, Karma hove rs in place while the contro ller tries to re- establis h a connec tion. If a conn ection can not be re-es tablishe d, Karma returns to the launch location.

Note: You can use the joystick s to maneuver Karma aro und obstacles o nly if a connectio n exists between the control ler and the drone .

Critical Landing

If Karma en counters an e mergency, suc h as a software p roblem, the controlle r notifies you a nd Karma im mediately l ands in pla ce.

Unless th e connecti on between K arma and the c ontroller is l ost, you can still us e the joysticks during thes e safety landings to maneuver around ob stacles. Recording c ontinues unti l you stop it or the battery runs out.

TRANSFERRING CONTENT MAINTENANCE

Your videos an d photos are save d to the camera’s mic roSD card. Transfer the content to a co mputer or mo bile devic e to view, edit, and share your a erial footage.

1. Download and insta ll the GoPro Ap p from the Appl e App Store or Google Play to your smartphone/tablet.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect your camera.

TRANSFERRING CONTENT TO A COMPUTER

1. Download and insta ll the GoPro Ap p from gopro.com/getstarted.

2. C onnect the c amera to your c omputer usi ng the USB cab le that came with yo ur camera.

3. Power on the camera and follow the computer’s on-screen instructions.

You can also transfer files to a co mputer usin g a card reade r (sold separately). Connect the card reader to your computer and insert the microSD c ard into the reader. You can the n transfer your f iles to your computer or delete selected files on your card.

PAIRING KARMA AND THE KARMA CONTROLLER

If you repla ce Karma an d/or the Karma controller, you must ma nually pair the two c omponent s. Pairing i s also required if the conn ection is lost and c annot be re-establish ed between K arma and the controller.

1. Press the Power button

2. P ress the Power button [ ] on Kar ma.

3. Fro m the Home me nu, tap Conn ect, then tap Pairing.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions. The Power button alternates between re d and blue du ring the pairing process.

CALIBRATION

Compas s calibrati on helps to ensure that Karm a can secure and maintain a s trong GPS si gnal throug hout the flig ht area. Acce lerometer calibration ensure s that Karma is s tabilized pro perly duri ng flight.

The comp ass and ac celeromete r on both Karm a and the controller are calibrated automatically. However, if either of these components must be recalibrated, the co ntroller notifies you and prov ides step-by-step instructi ons to guide yo u through the pro cess.

Do not drop, di sassemble, open, c rush, ben d, deform, pun cture, shred, microwave, in cinerate, or paint your Kar ma battery or Karma contro ller. Do not inse rt foreign objects into the battery bay on your Karma. D o not use your K arma or any G oPro produc t containin g a battery if the product has been dam aged—for exam ple, if cracke d, puncture d, or in contact with liquids. D isasse mbling, da maging, o r puncturin g the battery can caus e an explosion or fire.

WARNING: H andle and st ore batterie s properly to avoid inju ry or damag e. Most batte ry issues a rise from imprope r handling of b atteries an d, particu larly, from the continued use of damaged batteries.

Battery fluid can ca use serious burns to the ski n and eyes. In th e unlikely event that battery fluid le aks onto your ski n, wash the affec ted area with plenty of water and seek medical advice immediately.

Do not expos e your Karma o r battery to exces sive heat, inc luding di rect sunlight o r fire and stora ge or use inside cars in hot we ather, where it can be expo sed to temperat ures in excess of 14 0 cause the b attery to gen erate heat, ruptu re, or ignite. Using your Karma battery in t his manne r also may resu lt in loss of performanc e and a shortened life expectancy.

If the batter y is damaged and ignite s, do not use water to ex tinguish flames . Instead, use a f unctioning fire exting uisher. Do not short-circuit batterie s. Avoid storing th em around metal objects s uch as keys, po cket change, paper clips, and jewelry.

The batter y charger m ust be used in doors only. It is neither de signed nor tested for outdoors, in recreation vehicles, or on boats. Make no modifications to the battery charger. Unauthorized alterations may compromise safety, regulatory compliance, and battery charger perform ance, and m ay void the warra nty. Do not drop the battery charger or batteries.

The batter y is only inten ded for use with th e battery ch arger provided with your Karma. Do not co ntinue charg ing the battery if it does not reach full charge within t wo hours. Ove rcharging m ay cause the battery to become h ot, rupture, or ig nite. If you see any h eat deformati on or leakage, properly dispose of the battery.

Do not charg e or conne ct a battery if th e power cable h as been pi nched or shorte d. Always insp ect the batter y and charg er before charg ing. Do not pierce, crush, dent, o r deform the battery or charg er in any way. If either becomes deformed, properly dispose of it.

Do not dry yo ur Karma whi ch contains batteries wi th an external heat source su ch as a conventi onal or mic rowave oven or hair dr yer.

Do not attem pt to use the Karm a battery to power ot her electronics. Doing so m ay result in pe rmanent damage to your p roduct and/or personal injury.

BATTERY DISPOSAL

Most rechargeable lithium-polymer batteries are classified as nonhazardou s waste and are safe fo r disposa l in the norma l municip al waste stream. Ma ny localiti es have laws in place requiring battery re cycling. Check you r local laws to make sure that you ca n dispose of re chargeab le batterie s in your regul ar trash.

To safely dispose of l ithium-po lymer batteries, protect ter minals from exposure to othe r metal with packing, mas king, or ele ctrical tap e so they do not ca use a fire while b eing trans ported. Lithium-po lymer batteries, however, do contain recyclable materials and are accepted for recycling by the Rechargeable Battery Recyclin g Corporation’s (RBRC) Battery Re cycling Pro gram. We enco urage you to visit Call2Recyc le at call2re cycle.org or ca ll 1-800 -BATTERY in Nor th Americ a to find a convenie nt recycling l ocation Never dispose of a b attery in a fire because it may explode.

• If the warrant y period al ready expired a nd you did not p urchase GoPro Care, visit gopro.com to purchase a replacement.

KARMA WON’T PAIR WITH THE CONTROLLER

• Be sure you are not near an are a that contain s multiple W i-Fi signals or devices.

• Be sure to correctly follow the p airing instructions on the controller.

• Move the contro ller at leas t 6’ (2m) away from the drone.
