Why a variable frequency drive?
Appropriate power usage
of your process
Variable frequency drives (VFDs)
regulate motor speed to control the
flow and pressure of blowers or pumps
without dampers or throttling valves.
This results in energy savings and no
output waste. VFDs also provide a soft
start to the motors, reducing the stress
on driven load and resulting in lower
maintenance costs.
in response to load
A VFD manages power based on actual
demand and uses only the energy
required by the driven equipment to
provide valuable energy savings.
Avoid peak demand charges
When starting large motors with VFDs,
current inrush peaks are eliminated.
The VFD gradually ramps the motor
up to speed by varying output voltage,
current and frequency for a soft start.

High availability
The MV4 Series utilizes rugged IGBT
power modules that provide high
reliability with a low life-cycle cost.
The modular design includes common
power modules that are used for both
Active Front End (AFE) and inverter.
The standard power module reduces
the overall MTTR (module replacement
in five minutes) and increases the
availability of the drive.
Power channel bypass
option
The MV4 Series drive can be supplied
with power channel isolating
contactors to allow for continued
operation in the event of failure of one
of the parallel power sections. In that
case, the VFD control will determine
the failed power section, isolate it and
restart into the spinning motor.
The VFD output power is reduced, and
the motor load is limited to the VFD
available power. The VFD can then be
repaired during a scheduled downtime.
Power channel bypass
with N+1 redundancy option
In addition to power channel bypass
the VFD can be supplied with an
optional N+1 redundant power
channel. With this option, the VFD will
continue to operate at full power in the
event of a power channel failure.
VFD can operate at full power with a failed channel.
High efficiency and low losses
The transformerless design delivers higher efficiency for greater available power.
Low losses reduce air-conditioning requirements in the control room and overall
cost of ownership.

Process control benefitsMV4 Series drive options
Power dip ride-throughCritical speed avoidance
The MV4 Series drive provides six-cycle
power loss ride-through and keeps the
process running without tripping.
The MV4 Series drive can be
programmed for up to three critical
frequency bands and ride-through
these without any resonance issues.
Under-voltage operation
Economy-mode feature
The MV4 Series operates continuously
and provides available power to the
motor at a lower input supply voltage
(up to 70% of nominal voltage).
Flying start
into a spinning load
The MV4 Series offers the ability to
catch and take control of a spinning
load without any damaging torque
impacting the equipment if started
while the load is already spinning.
Ease of set-up & diagnostics
• Standard control interface offers
digital inputs/outputs and analog
inputs/outputs as standard. Each
of these inputs/outputs can be
programmed to a variety of different
functions for flexibility.
• Touchscreen operator interface
allows for quick, user-friendly
programming. Screens for fault
parameters and meters are user
configurable.
Most centrifugal pump and fan
applications are sized for worst-case
operating conditions and typically
operate well below the full speed and
full power point.
The MV4 Series drive is supplied with
a user-configurable economy-mode
setting for applications larger than
single channel 1250 HP/1 MW. The VFD
control initiates the standby of parallel
power sections that are not required
to meet the operating load conditions,
increasing the overall efficiency and
reducing power consumption.
For example, if a fan is operating at
no more than 88% of the rated speed,
the load requires 68% or less of the
rated power, allowing the drive to
conserve energy by placing one power
channel in standby.
One drive for multiple motors
• Lower capital cost
• Smaller installed footprint
• Less maintenance
• Reduced spare parts inventory
Up and down
synchronous transfer
• Start multiple motors one-by-one
and transfer them on utility lines
• Run the last motor continuously on
VFD at variable speed
• Increased energy savings
