Notes on ergonomic colour adjustment
If you select col ours for the display in your appli cation programmes, take note of the information
below.
The primary colours blue and red on a dark background do not produce the minimum required
contrast of 3:1 and are therefore not suitable for continuous t ext and data entry.
When using several colours f or characters and background and giving the primary colours full
modulation, you can obtain v ery suitable colour combinat i ons (see the following table):
-Colour com bi nation not suitable because col our l ocations are too close toget her, thin
characters are not identif i abl e or ri gorous focusing is demanded of the hum an eye.

VESA-DDC-compatible VGA interface
Your monitor is equipped with a VESA-DDC-compatible VGA interface. VESA-DDC (Video
Electronics Standard Association, Display Data Channel) is used as the c om munications interface
between the monitor and the computer. If your computer is equipped with a VESA-DDC-compatible
VGA interface, it can automatically read the dat a for ensuring optimum operation from y our m oni tor
and select the appropriate set t i ngs.

Preset operating modes
The picture position and siz e have been set to optimum values at the factory for the
operating modes listed above. Dependi ng on the screen controller used, it may be
i
necessary to adjust the display position and size. In this case, you can change and save
the settings (see "Operat ion of the monitor").

For ergonomic reasons, a screen resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels is recommended. Because of the
technology used (active matrix) an LCD monitor provides a totally flicker-f ree pi cture even with a
refresh rate of 60 Hz.

TCO'99
Congratulations
You have just purchased a TCO'99 approv ed and l abel l ed product!
Your choice has provided you wi t h a product developed for
professional use. Your purc hase has also contributed to reduc i ng
the burden on the environment and also to t he further development
of environmentally adapted electronics products.
Why do we have environmentally labelled computers?
In many countries, environmental labelling has become an established method for encouraging the
adaptation of goods and servic es to the environment. The main problem , as far as computers and
other electronics equipment are concerned, is that environmentally harmful substanc es are used
both in the products and during their m anufacture. Since it is not so far possible to sat i sfactorily
recycle the majority of electronics equipment, most of these potentially damagi ng substances
sooner or later enter nature.
There are also other characterist i cs of a computer, such as energy consumption levels, that are
important from the viewpoints of both the work (internal) and natural (external) environments. Si nce
all methods of electricity generation have a negative ef fect on the environment (e.g. acidic and
climate-influencing em i ssions, radioactive waste), it is vital to save energy. Electronics equipment in
offices is oft en l ef t running continuously and thereby consumes a lot of energy.
What does labelling involve?
This product meets the requirem ents for the TCO'99 scheme which provides for international and
environmental labelling of personal computers. The labelling scheme was developed as a joint effort
by the TCO (The Swedish Confederation of P rof essional Employees), S venska
Naturskyddsforeningen (The Swedi sh Society for Nature Conserv ation) and Statens
Energimyndighet (The Swedish Nati onal Energy Administration).
Approval requirements cover a wide range of issues: environment, ergonomics, us abilit y, emission
of electric and magnetic fields, energy consumpti on and el ectrical and fire safety .
The environmental demands impose restrictions on the presenc e and use of heavy metals,
brominated and chlorinated flame ret ardants, CFCs (freons) and chlorinat ed solvents, among other
things. The product must be prepared f or re cycling and the manufacturer i s obliged to have an
environmental policy which must be adhered to in each country where the company implements its
operational policy.
The energy requirements include a demand t hat the computer and/or display, after a certain period
of inactivity, shall reduce its power consumption to a lower level in one or more st ages. The length
of time to reactivate the computer shall be reasonable f or the user.
Labelled products must meet strict environmental dem ands, for example, in respect of the reduction
of electric and magnetic fields, physical and visual ergonomics and good usability.

Environmental requirements
Flame retardants
Flame retardants are present in print ed circuit boards, cables, wires, casings and housings. Their
purpose is to prevent, or at l east to delay the spread of fire. Up to 30% of the plastic i n a computer
casing can consist of flame retardant substances. Most flame retardants contain bromine or
chloride, and those flame ret ardants are chemically related to another group of environmental toxi ns,
PCBs. Both the flam e retardants containing bromine or chlori de and the PCBs are suspected of
giving rise to severe healt h effects, including reproductive damage in fish-eating birds and
mammals, due to the bio-ac cumulative
blood and researchers fear that dis turbances in foetus development may occur.
The relevant TCO'99 demand requires that plastic components weighing more than 25 grams must
not contain flame retardants wi th organically bound bromine or chlorine. Fl am e retardants are
allowed in the printed circuit boards since no substitut es are available.
Cadmium
2)
Cadmium is present in rechargeable batteries and in the colour-generating layers of certain
computer displays. Cadm i um dam ages the nervous system and is toxic in high doses. The relevant
TCO'99 requirement states that batteries, the colour-generati ng l ayers of display screens and the
electrical or electronics components must not contain any cadmium.
Mercury
2)
Mercury is sometim es found in batteries, relays and switches. It dam ages the nervous system and
is toxic in high doses . The relevant TCO'99 requirement stat es that batteries may not contain any
mercury. It also demands that mercury is not present in any of the electric al or el ectronics
components associated with the labelled unit. There is however one exception. Mercury i s, for the
time being, permitted in the back light system of flat panel monitors as there today is no
commercially avail abl e al ternative. TCO aims on removing this exception when a mercury f ree
alternative is availabl e.
CFCs (freons)
The relevant TCO'99 requirement stat es that neither CFCs nor HCFCs may be used duri ng the
manufacture and assembly of the product. CFCs (freons) are sometimes used for washing print ed
circuit boards. CFCs break down ozone and thereby damage the ozone layer in t he stratosphere,
causing increased reception on earth of ultraviolet light with e.g. increased risks of skin cancer
(malignant melanoma) as a consequence.
2)
Lead
Lead can be found in picture tubes, display screens, sol ders and capacitors. Lead damages t he
nervous system and in higher doses, causes lead poisoning. The relevant TCO´99 requirem ent
permits the inclusion of lead since no replacement has yet been developed.
