Preface

With your new cordless telephone system you have opted for lightweight and cordless telephoning, based on the latest DECT/GAP technology. Therefore, you are ensured of excellent sound quality and maximum privacy. Eavesdropping or breaking in on line by strangers is virtually impossible.
Your cordless telephone system can be extended to a total of eight cordless phones. It is possible to have an internal conversation using any two cordless phones.
Your cordless telephone system has a CE marking according to the guidelines of the European telecommunications laws 73/23/EEC, 89/336/EEC and 91/263/EEC. The CE marking corresponds to the European marking law 93/68/EEC.

Installing the set

To install the set, follow the steps given below. The cordless telephone system will then be ready for use.
Warnings:
Check whether the local mains voltage corresponds to the voltage on the power adapter.

1. Connect the telephone line to the telephone socket in the home base station.
2. Connect the telephone line to the telephone wall socket.
3. Connect the power cord to the power plug socket in the home base station.

4. Insert the power adapter plug into the wall socket. If the red light on the home base station is flashing, there is something wrong with the telephone line connection.
5. Connect the desk stand to the home base station. Locate the lower hooks first. The cables can be routed through the slots in the rear lower edge of the desk stand.
6. Remove the insulation strip from the battery at the bottom of the cordless phone.
7. Put the cordless phone in the home base station for at least 3.5 hours to charge the batteries initially.
When the batteries are charged the cordless phone is ready for use. For more information about charging batteries refer to the topic following.

Operating range

You can use your cordless phone in the area that is covered by the home base station or other telephone system (check with your dealer). Outside this area, you will lose contact with the system and the system icon on the display will start flashing. The warning light will flash and short, fast, warning beeps will be

Batteries

The cordless phone runs on three rechargeable batteries. You can fully charge flat batteries by placing the cordless phone in the home base station for 2.5 hours. Fully charged batteries give you 12 hours of calling time or 110 hours of stand-by time. The cordless phone displays a battery meter, which shows the power remaining in the batteries.
The cordless phone runs on Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries. They can be recharged at any time. Additionally, they are less damaging to the environment than other batteries.

Reading the battery meter

When the batteries are fully charged the battery meter on the cordless phone display consists of four blocks. The number of blocks decreases as the batteries discharge. If the batteries are almost flat, the battery meter and the red light on the cordless phone flash. An alarm sounds if there is less than 15 minutes calling time left in the batteries.

Place the cordless phone in the home base station, with the aerial upwards.

If the home base station green light is on or flashes (and the battery meter on the display flashes), the batteries are being charged. As soon as the batteries are fully charged, the green light goes out and the battery meter on the cordless phone stops flashing.

Changing the batteries

Rechargeable batteries have a limited life-span.

Under normal conditions, the batteries for the cordless phone will last for at least a year.

If the capacity of the cordless phone batteries becomes too low, ask your dealer to replace the batteries.
You can also replace the batteries yourself. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw from the battery compartment at the bottom of the cordless phone. Replace old batteries with new batteries of type NiMH AAA 450 mAh 1.2 V, with the flat side of the battery facing upwards.
The batteries do not contain cadmium and are therefore less damaging to the environment than other rechargeable batteries. However, all batteries should be treated as chemical waste.

Attaching and removing the clip

The cordless phone has a clip which you can use to attach the cordless phone to your clothes.
Attach the clip to the cordless phone. Do not press on the display!
Your cordless phone is now ready for use.
To minimize wear and tear, we recommend that you do not remove the clip from the cordless phone too often.

Safety instructions

Do not place the home base station near audio or video equipment. It may cause interference.

Intrinsic safety

Do not use the cordless phone in conditions where there is a danger of electrically ignited explosions.

Exposure to sunlight, heat and moisture

Cordless phone clip

Make it a habit to attach the cordless phone to your clothes, using the clip, so that you do not lose it.

Battery disposal

Defective batteries must be returned to a collection point for chemical waste disposal.

Spare parts and accessories

Use only approved spare parts and accessories. The operation of non-approved parts cannot be guaranteed and may even cause damage. For more information see “Maintenance, spare parts and accessories” under “Reference”.

A brief guide

Having installed the cordless telephone system you can now make and receive calls. For initial use it is assumed that you are near to the home base station.

Switching on

Before you can use the cordless phone you must switch it on:
• Press On for at least one second to switch the cordless phone on. The number ‘1’ appears on the display. This is the internal number of the cordless phone.

Making a call

Check whether the set is installed correctly by dialling a number you know.
1. Press and you can hear the dial tone. The red light appears on the home base station.
2. Dial the number you want to call using the numeric keys. You will hear the telephone ring.
3. Wait for an answer and, on completing your call, ask the person to call you back.

4. Press again to end the call. The duration of the call is displayed.
If you dialled a number and still hear the dial tone, you probably have to set the home base station to another dialling method. See “Tone or pulse dialling” under “Settings” for more details.

Switching off

If you do not want to make or receive calls you can switch the cordless phone off.
• Press and then Off to switch off the cordless phone. The ring signal on the home base station continues to work even when you switch off the cordless phone.

Cancel

You can cancel any operation:
• Press C for at least one second. The cordless phone returns to stand-by.

Telephoning

Switching the cordless phone on and off

While the cordless phone is switched on it is in stand-by mode, the batteries are in use. With fully charged batteries, the cordless phone can operate for about 110 hours in stand­by mode. If you are not using the cordless phone to make or receive calls you can put the cordless phone in the home base station, or turn the cordless phone off.

To switch the cordless phone on

• Press the On key for one second.

To switch the cordless phone off

• Press then Off.
You cannot turn the cordless phone off during a call.
If the cordless phone is off and you are called, the ring signal on the home base station still works. Press On for one second to switch on the cordless phone, then
to receive the call.

Making a call

To make a call, use the key. Pre-dialling, an alternative method, is described later.
To make a call in the usual way:
1. Press and wait for the dial tone.

Pre-dialling

When you make a call you can also enter the number and then press instead of vice versa. This allows you to check and, if necessary, correct the number.

Mute

Blocking the keys

During a call you may want to talk to someone else, without the caller hearing. You can do this by switching off the microphone using the key.
You can switch the microphone off by:
• Pressing until you are ready to talk to the caller again. Short beeps indicate that the microphone is off.
Or
• Pressing shortly. Short beeps indicate that the microphone is off. To switch the microphone on, press again.
If you hear the alarm signal, short beeping sounds, during a call you must press twice to switch the microphone off. Pressing this key once switches off the alarm; pressing it again switches off the microphone.

If you carry the cordless phone in your pocket you might accidentally press the keys and make a call. To prevent this you can block the keys of the cordless phone. The keys no longer work, but you can still receive calls.
To block the keys press , then press the key. The lock icon is displayed.

Paging a cordless phone from the home base station

The home base station has a search function with which you can page the cordless phone.
Press the Search/Subscribe button on the home base station, and the cordless phone rings.
A symbol ‘ ’ appears on the cordless phone display. Press twice, or the Search/Subscribe button once, to stop the ringing.

Using more than one cordless phone

If you use more than one cordless phone with the home base station there are a few special details about telephoning.

Internal or external call?

If you receive a call there is a different ring signal for internal and external calls.
• An internal ring signal has a 2 second signal

followed by a 4 second pause.
• An external ring signal is the same as usual.

During an internal call the number of the caller’s cordless phone is displayed.
You can set the sound of the ring signal for internal and external calls yourself. This makes it easier for you to recognize the ring signal on your own cordless phone. For more information please read “Settings”.

Making and receiving an internal call

Consulting with another cordless phone

For internal calls use the Int key together with the key. If you receive an internal call the number of the caller appears on the display.
To place an internal call:

3. Press to end the call. The duration of the call is displayed.

In a three-party call a caller is connected to two cordless phones on the same home base station.
You have an external call and you wish to involve a third person with a cordless phone on the same home base station:
1. Press then Int to put the external call on hold.

Searching for cordless phones or people

The cordless telephone system has a function with which you can search for cordless phones and any cordless phone user. You can call all other cordless phones using the cordless phone.
To use the search function:
1. Press the * key.
2. Press then Int. All cordless phones connected to the home base station will ring.
3. Wait for an answer. You will have a connection with the first cordless phone that answers the call.

If you receive a search call from another cordless phone a symbol is displayed, together with the number of the caller, for example ‘ ’. Press to answer the call. You will only have a connection if you are the first to respond.

Memory

Using the memory

The cordless phone automatically stores the last ten numbers dialled, and you can choose another ten numbers to store in the cordless phone.
Both the stored numbers and the last dialled numbers are retained even if the cordless phone is turned off or the batteries are flat.

Redial

The last ten numbers you dialled are available for redial.
To redial the last number dialled:
1. Press and wait for the dial tone.
2. Press .

To dial one of the ten last dialled numbers:

2. You can scroll through the list of the ten last dialled numbers using the Up or Down key.
3. When the number you want to redial is displayed, press .
Tips:
You can correct the number on the display using the C key and the numeric keys. This is a temporary correction and it is not stored.

Storing numbers in the memory

Memory
You can store up to ten telephone numbers in the cordless phone’s permanent memory. The numbers stay in the memory even when the cordless phone is switched off.
To store a number:
1. Press then .
2. Press the numeric key to be assigned to the telephone number (0 - 9). If a number has already been assigned to this key it will be displayed.
3. If no number has yet been assigned to this key enter the telephone number or press (see below).
4. Press then to store the number.

To include a pause (to wait for the dial tone) in a number, press then 2. On the display you will see a dash at that point in the number.
If you make a mistake while entering the number press the C key one or more times and enter the correct number.
If a number has already been stored under a key press

You can press to request the last dialled number as the number to be stored. You can also use the Up or Down key to scroll through the list of ten most recently dialled numbers.
If you often call several people in one organisation that has direct dialling of extension numbers you can store the common part of the numbers in memory. You can then enter the variable part of the number manually each time you call.

Calling a stored number

Sticker

The cordless phone comes with a sticker for numbers stored in the memory. You can write down whose numbers are stored under which keys on the sticker and attach the sticker to the back of the cordless phone.

You can call a stored number directly, or by scrolling through the stored numbers and selecting one.
To dial a stored number direct:
1. Press and wait for the dial tone.

Changing or deleting a stored number

You can delete or change stored numbers
To delete a stored number:

Returning a call

If you receive an internal call, the number of the caller is displayed. The number is stored in the who called memory as soon as you are called. It makes no difference whether you answer the call or not. Using the call return function, you can easily return a call to these numbers. The who called memory holds up to ten numbers.
To return the last call:

Settings

Changing the settings on the home base station (PIN code)

Before you can alter settings on the home base station you have to be connected to it. To change settings, you sometimes have to enter the home base station PIN code. The PIN code is preset to 1111 by default. To prevent others changing the settings of the home base station, you should change this code. You can read how to do this in “Changing the home base station PIN code” under “Extra features”.
When you must enter the PIN code, four dashes are displayed.
• Enter the home base station PIN code using the numeric keys on the cordless phone.

Adjusting the ring volume

You can adjust the ring volume of the cordless phone and the home base station.

Call tariff

If the home base station receives metering pulses during a call, the costs of the call are displayed when you finish the conversation. You can set the amount of money (call tariff) with which the costs increment with each metering pulse. If no metering pulses are received, the call duration in hours, minutes and seconds will be displayed instead.
Example:
Suppose you have set the call tariff to 0.25. When, during a call, the first metering pulse is received the call costs will be 0.25, with the second pulse they will be 0.50 and so on.
Ask your dealer if your telephone network provides metering pulses.
To set the call tariff:
1. Press then the R key for 2 seconds. Four dashes are displayed.

Tone or pulse dialling

The home base station can send tones (default) or pulses when dialling a number. If your cordless telephone system normally uses pulse dialling you can switch to tone dialling if required, for example to control a teleservice.
To switch the cordless phone to tone dialling during a call, press and then *. When you hang up the cordless phone reverts to the pulse dialling again. The tone or pulse dialling setting is retained during power off.

What dialling method?

You can easily check whether tone or pulse dialling is required. Proceed as follows:
1. Check if the home base station is set to tone dialling which is default.
2. Press . You hear the dial tone.
3. Dial the number of someone you know. If the external line supports tone dialling you will hear the phone ring.

Changing the wait-for-dial tone pause

If you include a pause in a telephone number there will be a pause during dialling at that point to wait for the dial tone. You can adjust the length of the pause.
The standard pause is 3 seconds. You can reset this to from 1 to 6 seconds:
1. Press then the R key for 2 seconds. Four dashes are displayed.
2. Enter the PIN code of the home base station (default is 1111). Two dashes are displayed.
3. Enter 62. The current pause length is displayed.
4. Enter a number (1 - 6) to select the length of the pause in seconds.

Setting a hot line

You can set the cordless phone so that pressing any key dials a certain number. This means that if any key is pressed, for example by a small child, the same ‘hot line’ number will always be dialled.

You can prevent certain numbers being called with a cordless phone by blocking those numbers in the home base station. You can still receive incoming calls. You can switch call barring on and off in the cordless phone. Call barring in the cordless phone is off by default.

Adding extra security

The cordless telephone system has the unique advantages of DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications); this means that no one can eavesdrop on your calls. In addition, you can also protect the cordless telephone system by changing the default security codes.
There are three codes for the security of the cordless telephone system:
• Home base station Personal Identification Number (PIN) code: this code must be entered before the home base station settings can be changed.
• Cordless phone PIN code: using this PIN code, you can protect the cordless phone against use and/or programming by other people.
• Authentication Code (AC): this is a secret code of the home base station which is necessary to subscribe an extra cordless phone to the home base station.

Changing the home base station PIN code

To prevent unauthorized people accessing the settings of the home base station it is secured by a PIN code. Each time you want to change the settings of the home base station you must enter the PIN code. You cannot switch off this security feature but you can change the PIN code on the home base station.

Changing home base station authentication code

The home base station can handle up to 8 cordless phones. An authentication code makes sure that only the cordless phones you want can use the home base station. This code is a secret number of between 4 and 8 digits. Only cordless phones that have been subscribed can connect to the home base station.
To subscribe a cordless phone to the home base station you need:
• The authentication code.
• The PARK code (on the home base station).
• To press the Search/Subscribe button.

Subscribing cordless phones

Extra features
The cordless phone that comes with the home base station is already subscribed to the home base station. Any cordless phones you buy separately must be subscribed too, in order to connect to the home base station. A maximum of eight cordless phones can be subscribed to each home base station. One cordless phone can be subscribed to up to eight base stations.

Subscribing a cordless phone

To subscribe a cordless phone to a home base station you need the PARK (Portable Access Right Key) code of the home base station. The PARK is printed on the back of the home base station. In addition to the PARK you need the authentication code of the home base station. The authentication code is secret and prevents other cordless phones subscribing to the home base station without your approval.
To subscribe a cordless phone to a home base station:

To be able to use a certain home base station the cordless phone must be subscribed to that home base station and be connected to it. A cordless phone can be subscribed to multiple home base stations, but can only be connected to one home base station at a time.
You can select a home base station in two ways from a list of home base stations in the cordless phone:
• To which you are subscribed.

• To which you are subscribed and within range.

Telephoning using a switchboard

When you use a switchboard it is sometimes necessary to wait for the dial tone before dialling a number. If the whole number is to be entered and displayed,

prior to dialling, for example a stored number, then you must indicate where in the number the cordless phone should wait for the dial tone.
To include a pause (to wait for the dial tone) in a number press then 2. The cordless phone will display a dash at the location of the pause.
If there is a dash in a number the cordless phone waits for a while for the dial tone. If you hear the dial tone while the cordless phone is still waiting, you can always press On to continue dialling.

Setting signalling method

If you use a switchboard the home base station transmits signals to the switchboard when you press the R key. Switchboards use either earth or hook flash as a signalling method. You will find details of which one is used in the switchboard documentation. You must set the home base station to the appropriate signalling method for the switchboard.
Earth signalling can only be used with a suitable switchboard.
Set the signalling method for the switchboard as follows:
1. Press and then press the R key for 2 seconds. Four dashes are displayed.
2. Enter the PIN code for the home base station (default is 1111). Two dashes are displayed.

Setting switchboard numbers

Extra features
If you want to make an external call using a switchboard you must sometimes dial a prefix for example a zero to get an outside line. Depending on the switchboard, you must then wait for the dial tone before dialling the rest of the number. You can insert an automatic pause for all external numbers via the switchboard if it is necessary to wait for the dial tone.
You can allocate three different switchboard numbers, using sequential number 1, 2, or 3. If you then call a number that starts with one of these switchboard numbers the home base station will automatically insert the pause. For example, if the number of the switchboard is 12, set ‘12’ as the switchboard number. If you then dial ‘12345’ from the cordless phone, the home base station will automatically insert a pause after ‘12’.
To set switchboard numbers:
1. Press and then the R key for 2 seconds. Four dashes are displayed.
2. Enter the PIN code for the home base station (default is 1111). Two dashes are displayed.

Setting other switchboard numbers

If the switchboard is part of a network of switchboards you can call using multiple switchboards. In that case, there may be more than one switchboard number in the number you dial.
Depending on the switchboards, pauses may be necessary after the number of the switchboard has been dialled. Using this function, you can set three different switchboard numbers which occur somewhere in the middle of a number you dial. If you dial a number with the cordless phone, the home base station will automatically insert a pause after you have chosen one of the set numbers.
For example, if you have set ‘12’ as a switchboard number, and ‘34’ as another switchboard number, and you dial ‘123456’, then the home base station will insert a pause after ‘12’ and after ‘34’.

Transferring calls

In general, you can transfer calls as described below. However, transferring calls may work differently on the switchboard.
Transfer calls to another extension as follows:
1. Press the R key to put the current call on hold. You hear the dial tone of the switchboard.
2. Enter the number of the extension to which you want to transfer the call. If the extension is available you will hear it ring. You can wait until the call is answered.
3. Press to transfer the call, or press the R key to return to the caller.

How far can I go from the home base station without the cordless phone failing?

In the house the limit is approximately 50 metres, outside up to 300 metres.

Can somebody eavesdrop on me?

This is not possible because of the digital techniques and encryption which is used.

Do I get a warning before the batteries run out?

An alarm sounds when approximately fifteen minutes calling time is left.

How can I subscribe a cordless phone to a home base station?

To subscribe a cordless phone you need the PARK code and the authentication code of the home base station. How to subscribe is explained in “Subscribing cordless phones” under “Extra features”.

I can not switch on the cordless phone by pressing On for at least two seconds. Why?

Put the cordless phone in the home base station. If the display comes on the batteries are almost discharged. Leave the cordless phone in the home base station for at least 30 minutes so that the batteries are charged. If the display remains off after charging the cordless phone is defective or the batteries may need replacing. See “Batteries” under “Quick start”.
I have placed the cordless phone in the home base station but the green charging light does not come on. Why?
Check if the cordless phone placed properly in the home base station. If the batteries are completely flat, leave the cordless phone in the home base station to charge the batteries, the green charging light will be lit after approximately 30 minutes.

If you can see the ring off icon displayed it means that the volume of the ring signal has been set to zero, or the ring signal was switched off. If the ring signal has been switched off, it will revert to on when you hang up. Press the Up or Down key to increase the volume

I hear a warning tone and the system icon is flashing. What’s wrong?

The cordless phone is not connected to the home base station. The cordless phone is probably out of range. Bring the cordless phone back within range of the home base station.
It is also possible that the cordless phone has not been subscribed to the home base station or that subscription is cancelled on the cordless phone. Finally, it is possible that another home base station has been selected than the one which you are close to. See “Subscribing cordless phones” under “Extra features”.

I hear a warning tone and the battery meter is flashing. What’s wrong?

The batteries are almost discharged. Put the cordless phone in the home base station to charge the batteries.
