Welcome!
The EPSON Stylus® C82 printer is the ideal desktop printer for business and home
use. With its exceptional speed and print resolutions, it is practical for everyday use,
yet capable of delivering when you need superior printing. It provides you with these
advanced features:
■
EPSON’s exclusive DuraBrite™ inks. These quick-drying inks are resistant to
water and fading, so prints stand the test of time. Because these ink particles
remain near the surface and don’t bleed through, they’re ideal for double-sided
prints.
Note: The light resistance of prints is rated up to 70 years based on accelerated
testing of prints on EPSON special media, displayed indoors, under glass. Actual
print stability will vary according to media, printed image, display conditions,
light intensity, humidity, and other atmospheric conditions. EPSON does not
guarantee the longevity of prints. For maximum print life, display all prints under
glass or lamination or properly store them.
■
Speeds of up to 22 pages per minute for black text printing
■
Resolution Performance Management™ (RPM) technology, which optimizes the
number and placement of ink droplets on various media. Delivers superior photo
quality with manageable print file sizes.
■
Exif (Exchangeable Image File) Print format support. This international standard
ensures the accurate reproduction of your digital camera images. Most digital
cameras store Exif Print information, such as shutter speed, metering, flash, and
exposure settings, in the JPEG image file. Your printer, with EPSON Software™
Film Factory,™ uses these settings to create accurate prints.

Cleaning the Print Head
If your printouts are unexpectedly light, or dots or lines are missing, you may need to
clean the print head. This unclogs the nozzles so they can deliver ink properly.
Cleaning the print head uses ink, so clean it only if print quality declines.
This section explains how to clean the print head using the printer’s Head Cleaning
utility (available only when the printer is connected directly to your computer, not
over a network).
You can also clean the print head by holding down the H ink button on the printer for
three seconds when the red H ink out light is off.
For more information about cleaning the print head, see your Print Show movies;

Running the Head Cleaning Utility
1. Make sure the printer is turned on but not printing, and the H ink out light is off.

see page 27.)
2. Windows: Right-click the printer icon on your taskbar (in the lower right

3. Follow the instructions on the screen to clean the print head. Cleaning takes
about 60 seconds, during which the printer makes some noise and the Ppower
light flashes.
Caution: Never turn off the printer while the Ppower light is flashing, unless the
printer hasn’t moved or made noise for more than 5 minutes.
4. When the Ppower light stops flashing, make sure plain paper is loaded in the
printer. Then click

see any improvement after cleaning three or four times, check the solutions
beginning on page 45. You can also turn the printer off and wait overnight—this
allows any dried ink to soften—and then try cleaning the print head again.
26
Maintaining Your Printer
Examining the Nozzle Check Pattern
Examine the nozzle check pattern you print. It should look something like this:
Each staggered horizontal and straight vertical line should be complete, with no gaps
in the dot pattern. If your printout looks okay, you’re done.
If there are gaps in the lines, clean the print head again; see page 25 for instructions.
Replacing an Ink Cartridge
When the red H ink out light is flashing, one of your ink cartridges is low on ink. This
is a good time to make sure you have a new ink cartridge. When the H ink out light
stays on, an ink cartridge is empty and you need to replace it.
Caution: You cannot print if any of the ink cartridges are empty. Leave the empty
cartridge installed in the printer until you have obtained a replacement; otherwise
the ink remaining in the print head nozzles may dry out.
If the
)
paper out or P power light are also flashing or on, check the table on

When an ink cartridge has been installed in your printer for more than six months,
you may need to replace it if you notice that your printouts don’t look as good as they
used to. If print quality doesn’t improve after cleaning and aligning the print head,
you can replace the cartridge even if the H ink out light isn’t flashing.

Ink Cartridge Precautions
Warning: Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children and do not drink the ink.
If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and water. If ink gets
in your eyes, flush them thoroughly with water.
Caution: Don’t remove the cartridge label,
or ink will leak.
Don’t remove the green IC chip from the
cartridge. Installing a cartridge without an
IC chip can damage the printer. Avoid
touching the green IC chip, as this can
damage the ink cartridge.
If you remove an ink cartridge temporarily,
protect the ink supply port on the bottom of
the cartridge from dirt and dust. Place it in a
small box, or, if you have the original packaging, return it to its own box.
Store ink cartridges in the same environment as the printer. Stand the cartridges
upright, as shown (the label identifying the color should be on the top).

Cleaning the Printer
To keep your printer working at its best, you should clean it several times a year.
1. Turn off the printer and wait for the green Ppower light to go out.
2. Unplug the power cord.
3. Disconnect the printer cable from the printer.
4. Remove all the paper from the sheet feeder.
5. Clean the exterior of the printer with a soft, damp cloth. Keep the printer cover
closed to prevent water from getting inside.
6. If ink leaks inside the printer, carefully wipe it off with a damp cloth.
If ink leaks inside,
wipe here with a
damp, lint-free cloth
Caution: Don’t touch the gears inside the printer.
Make sure you use a soft cloth to clean the printer’s lid; otherwise you may
scratch it. Don’t use a rough cloth, and never use a hard or abrasive brush to
clean any part of the printer case.
Never use alcohol or thinner for cleaning; they can damage the printer
components and case.
Don’t get water on the printer components, and don’t spray lubricants or oils
inside the printer.
Don’t use any cleaning sheets included with special media; they may jam inside
the printer.

transporting the printer.
Be sure to remove the tape used in step 5 after installing the printer in its new
location.
1. Turn on the printer and wait until the print head locks in the far right position.
Then press the P power button to turn the printer off.
2. Unplug the power cord.
3. Disconnect the printer cable from the printer.
4. Remove any paper from the printer and remove the paper support.
5. Open the printer cover. Secure
the ink cartridge holder to the

The printer is not receiving power. Try these solutions:
■
Make sure the printer is turned on.
■
Turn off the printer, plug in the power cord securely, and turn the
printer on again.
■
Make sure the outlet is working and is not controlled by a switch or
timer. If in doubt, try another outlet.
Running a Printer Check
You can run a printer check to determine whether a problem comes from the printer
itself or some other source. Follow these steps:
1. Make sure both the printer and computer are turned off. Then disconnect the
interface cable from the printer.
2. Make sure letter-size or larger paper is loaded in the printer.
3. Hold down the ) paper button, then press and release the Ppower button.
Continue holding down the ) paper button until the Ppower light starts to
flash, then release it.
The printer prints one page showing its ROM version number, ink counter, and a
nozzle check pattern. Only the nozzle check pattern is shown below. (If the
pattern has gaps in its dots, you need to clean the print head; see page 25.)
4. To end the check, turn the printer off after it prints the check page. Then
If the check page prints, the problem probably lies in your software settings, the
interface cable, or your computer. Another possibility is that your printer software
may not be installed correctly.
If the check page doesn’t print, you may have a problem with your printer. Try the
suggestions in “Problems and Solutions” beginning on page 43. If nothing seems to
work, contact your dealer or EPSON as described on page 51.

Problem Solving
reconnect the interface cable and turn on your printer and computer.
Problems and Solutions
Here are some troubleshooting tips if you have any problems setting up your printer,
installing software, or printing.
Setup and Software
Installation Problems
The printer makes noise after ink
cartridge installation.
■
The first time you install ink
cartridges, the printer must charge
its ink delivery system for about 90
seconds. Wait until charging
finishes (the Ppower light stops
flashing) before you turn off
the printer or it may charge
improperly and use excess ink the
next time you turn it on. If the
printer stops moving or making
noise, but the P power light is still
flashing after 5 minutes, turn off
the printer. If the light is still
flashing when you turn it back on,
contact EPSON as described on
page 51.
■
Make sure no packing material
remains in the printer. Turn off
the printer, wait a moment, then
turn it back on to clear the error.
You’re having problems installing
the printer software.
■
Make sure your printer is turned
on and the printer cable is securely
connected at both ends. Then
carefully follow the installation
instructions for your system.
(You’ll find them on the Start Here
sheet or beginning on page 53.)
Also make sure your system meets
the requirements beginning on
page 59.
■
Close your other applications,
including any screen savers and
virus protection software, and
install again.
■
For Windows NT or 2000, if you
see an error message or your
software doesn’t install correctly,
you may not have software
installation privileges. Contact
your System Administrator.
■
If your printer icon (
doesn’t appear in the Macintosh
Chooser, you may have an
extension conflict. Turn off any
unnecessary extensions and restart
your computer.

■
Due to the nature of pigment inks,
lighting conditions can affect the
appearance of printer output. For
example, a print viewed in daylight
may appear to have a slightly
different color balance when viewed
under tungsten lighting. Your
printer software was designed to
represent color accurately when
prints are illuminated with a D50
(daylight) light source.
■
Your printed colors can never

color management system to get as
close as possible.
Your printout is grainy.
■
Use a higher quality paper, or select
a higher Quality Type (Windows;

■
Increase the image resolution or
print it in a smaller size; see your
software documentation.
Problem Solving
47
Some parts of your print are not as
glossy as others.
Because of the nature of pigment inks,
the degree of gloss may be uneven on
glossy photo papers. Surface gloss
decreases with greater pigment
saturation.

printer software.
■
If it’s wrinkled when it ejects, the
paper may be damp or too thin.
Paper doesn’t feed correctly or jams
in the printer.
■
If paper doesn’t feed correctly,
remove it from the sheet feeder.
Fan the edges of the sheets, reload
them against the right edge, then

ENERGY STAR Compliance
As an ENERGY STAR Partner, EPSON has determined that this
product meets the ENERGY STAR guidelines for energy
efficiency. The EPA ENERGY STAR office equipment program is
a voluntary partnership with the computer and office equipment
industry to promote the introduction of energy-efficient personal
computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, and copiers in an
effort to reduce air pollution caused by power generation.
Important Safety Instructions
Before using your printer, read the following safety instructions to make sure you use the printer safely
and effectively:
■
Be sure to follow all warnings and instructions marked on the printer.
■
Use only the type of power source indicated on the printer’s label.
■
Connect all equipment to properly grounded power outlets. Avoid using outlets on the same
circuit as photocopiers or air control systems that regularly switch on and off.
■
Place the printer near a wall outlet where the plug can be easily unplugged.
Placez l’imprimante près d’une prise de contacte où la fiche peut être débranchée facilement.
■
Do not let the power cord become damaged or frayed.
■
If you use an extension cord with the printer, make sure the total ampere rating of the devices
plugged into the extension cord does not exceed the cord’s ampere rating. Also, make sure the total
ampere rating of all devices plugged into the wall outlet does not exceed the wall outlet’s ampere
rating.
■
Keep your printer and computer system away from potential sources of electromagnetic
interference, such as loudspeakers or cordless telephone base units.
■
Avoid locations that are subject to rapid changes in heat or humidity, shocks or vibrations, or dust.
■
Leave enough room around the printer for sufficient ventilation.
■
Do not place the printer near a radiator or heating vent or in direct sunlight.
■
Place the printer on a flat, stable surface that extends beyond the printer base in all directions. The
printer will not operate properly if it is tilted or at an angle.
■
Turn off and unplug the printer before cleaning. Clean with a damp cloth only. Do not spill liquid
on the printer.
■
Always turn the printer off using the P power button. The P power light flashes briefly and then
goes off. Don’t switch off the power strip or unplug the printer until the P power light is off.
Requirements and Notices
61
■
Do not block or cover the openings in the printer’s case or insert objects through the slots.
■
Except as specifically explained in this manual, do not attempt to service the printer yourself.
■
Unplug the printer and refer servicing to qualified service personnel under the following
conditions:
If the power cord or plug is damaged; if liquid has entered the printer; if the printer has been
dropped or the case damaged; if the printer does not operate normally or exhibits a distinct change
in performance. Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions.
Ink Cartridge Safety Instructions
■
Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children and do not drink the ink.
■
Be careful when you handle used ink cartridges; there may be ink remaining around the ink supply
port. If ink gets on your skin, wash it off with soap and water. If it gets in your eyes, flush them
immediately with water.
■
Do not put your hand inside the printer or touch the cartridge during printing.
■
Do not move the print head by hand. You may damage the printer.
■
Install the ink cartridge immediately after you remove it from its plastic package. Leaving the
cartridge unpacked for a long time before use can result in reduced print quality.
■
Do not use an ink cartridge beyond the date printed on the cartridge carton. For best results, use
up the ink cartridges within six months of first installing them.
■
Store ink cartridges in a cool, dark place.
■
After bringing an ink cartridge inside from a cold storage site, allow it to warm up at room
temperature for at least three hours before using it.
■
Do not dismantle the ink cartridges or try to refill them. This could damage the print head.
■
Do not touch the green IC chip on the side of the cartridge. This may affect normal operation and
printing.
■
If you remove an ink cartridge for later use, protect the ink supply area from dirt and dust and
store it in the same environment as the printer. Note that there is a valve in the ink supply port,
making covers or plugs unnecessary, but care is needed to prevent the ink from staining items that
the cartridge touches. Do not touch the ink cartridge ink supply port or surrounding area.
■
Before transporting the printer, make sure the print head is capped in the far right position and the
ink cartridges are in place. Tape the ink cartridge holder to the printer case to make sure it remains
in the proper position.

to select the correct paper type setting.
EPSON is always adding new papers to this list. Visit the EPSON Store at
www.epsonstore.com and check out the latest media.
