Introduction

The Epson® 34OMB SCSI hard disk drive is a high capacity, high performance, random access storage device designed to be installed in your EISA Series (desktop or tower) computer.
This manual provides information you need to know to install the SCSI hard disk drive in your computer, and lists the technical specifications for the drive. Make sure you read all the information in this booklet before you install the drive.

First make sure you have all of the following items:
n
Epson 340MB SCSI hard disk drive
n
Four retaining screws
n
The SCSI ribbon cable and LED cable that came with your SCSI adapter card
n
The twist wire tie for fastening the cable.
If anything is missing or damaged, contact your dealer.
Before you install the SCSI hard disk drive in your computer, make sure you perform the following procedures in the order listed here:
n
Install the SCSI adapter card. See your SCSI Adapter Card User’s Guide for instructions.
n
Check the jumper settings on the SCSI drive as described on page 4 of this manual.
H
Adjust the terminators on the SCSI drive as described on page 7 of
this manual.
After performing these procedures, you can install the SCSI hard disk drive in your Epson computer; just follow the procedures described in your computer User’s Guide to install a disk drive. Also see your SCSI Adapter Card User’s Guide for details on installing an internal SCSI device.
As you install the SCSI hard disk drive, refer to the illustration on the
following page to identify the different parts.

The jumper labeled J7 controls the type of bus signals used by the SCSI adapter. Pins 3 and 4 must have a jumper installed and all other pins must be off; this indicates that the SCSI interface is singled-ended. Do not change this jumper setting.

Jumper J8 determines whether the hard disk drive or the SCSI interface powers the terminators on the drive. The hard disk drive is shipped with jumper J8 installed so that the hard disk drive automatically provides power to the terminators. You should not remove this jumper.

Terminator Settings
For SCSI devices to communicate properly with each other, the SCSI interface requires special resistor packs known as terminators. These terminators reduce the echo, standing waves, and interference along the SCSI interface.
The first and last devices on a
devices in between must not be terminated. If you install the SCSI hard disk drive in the middle of the SCSI
interface, you must remove all three terminator resistors on the drive. When replacing the resistors, make sure pin 1 is aligned correctly.
