5. AERIAL MYTHS
Initially, if you use an existing analogue rooftop or loft aerial now, often there is no need to buy a new aerial, provided the aerial is in good condition.
However, if the current aerial or it’s cabling is in poor condition which results in unsatisfactorily reception, you could improve this with a new aerial suitable for digital terrestrial reception.
You can receive excellent digital TV and Radio:
if the service provider delivers enough
signal (level and quality) to your area;
if the indoor or outdoor aerial is healthy
(aerial is clean, in good condition and correctly aimed);
if the connection between the aerial and TV
set is healthy (good quality cable, 75 ohm, no sharp bends or kinks, metal connectors);
You can, in certain situations, improve the digital TV and Radio reception:
if you use an outdoor aerial, which is not
obstructed by the metalwork that is used in the building construction,
if you use an active aerial for situations
where you have a long cable between the aerial and the receiver.
IF IN DOUBT
Please check with your retailer first in case you need to upgrade your rooftop or loft aerial.
NOTE In some parts of the UK, FREEVIEW signals
use a different frequency or trans mitter from your existing analogue service and therefore it is recommended to fit a so called “wide band” type of aerial.
6. CLEANING
1. Switch the receiver to OFF.
2. Wait at least five seconds, to help avoid possible damage to the receiver’s electronics.
3. Use a dry, soft and clean lint-free cleaning cloth to clean the receiver.
4. If you need to use a detergent, make a mildsoap solution. Other cleaning agents can cause damage to the outside surface.
a. Make a dry, soft and clean lint-free
cleaning cloth a little damp.
b. Carefully wipe the surface and make sure
that no moisture gets into the receiver.
c. Let the receiver dry on the air.
WARNING
R
ISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK.
REMOVE THE MAINS PLUG FROM THE POWER
SUPPLY SOCKET BEFORE YOU CLEAN THE RECEIVER. MAKE SURE, IF USED, CLEANING AGENTS CANNOT GET IN THE RECEIVER.

2. TERMINOLOGY
Active aerial An active aerial has a built-in pre-amplifier which means that the
received signal gets amplified before it is fed to the receiver. The advantage of this aerial type is that (longer) aerial cables become less vulnerable for interference. This results in better quality audio and video.
COFDM In the DTT area, COFDM is a form of signal transmission as specified by
DVB-T. The result of the COFDM digital transmission is to provide a received picture that is always free of ghosts and noise (snow).
Constellation A Constellation is a modulation scheme to improve the transmission.
Known digital frequency modulation schemes are: QPSK means Quadrature Phase Shift Keying; QAM16 means 16-state Quadrature Amplitude Modulation; QAM64 means 64-state Quadrature Amplitude Modulation.
CVBS Composite video is a combination of the three basic elements of a video
picture (colour, brightness, and synchronization) into a single cable with two wires in it as used in SCART and RCA (Video) connections.
Digital Terrestrial TV Digital Terrestri al Television or DTT is basically a digital TV signal
received through a conventional (indoor or outdoor) TV aerial. Digital broadcasts give you DVD-quality video and CD-quality audio.
FEC A recover-signal mechanism which is part of the transmission that gives
the receiver software the opportunity to correct for missing or corrupted data in the received digital signal.
FFT A modulation mechanism which is part of the transmission used to make
the transmitted signal less vulnerable for interference.
Frequency band A frequency band is a range of frequencies which are dedicated to a
certain usage. In the terrestrial broadcast area, commonly known bands are the VHF-band and the UHF-band.
FTA An unscrambled broadcast which you can view without additional
equipment and payments to a service provider.
Guard interval A timing mechanism which is part of the transmission to prevent
distorted signals due to transmission errors and signal echoes.
Local Channel Number
Some service providers transmit a preferred channel order to make sure that during a channel search, all channels are re-arranged in a ‘logical’ order. If this selection is active, you are not able to move the channels according to your personal preferences.

MUX (Multiplex) In analogue television broadcasting a transmission channel (e.g. UHF
channel 42) has only one TV channel (program) or service. In digital terrestrial television broadcasting, a transmission channel (e.g. UHF channel 42) is divided into different sections that can have more than one TV channel (program) or service. Such a transmission channel used for digital terrestrial broadcasts is called a MUX.
NTSC USA video standard with image format 4:3, 525 lines, 60Hz and 4MHz
bandwidth with a total of 6MHz video channel width.
PAL European video standard with image format 4:3, 625 lines, 50Hz and
4MHz bandwidth with a total of 8MHz video channel width.
PID
(Video, Audio, PCR)
A digital signal is divided into so called packages (as suit cases on a transport belt). Each packet holds certain information for Video, Audio, timing and completeness of the packet stream so that the receiver can compose a distortion free signal for your TV or radio.
QAM Quadrature Amplitude Modulation is a technique where the signal is
polarized and modulated in order to get more TV or Radio channels into a physical VHF or UHF channel.
RGB RGB is used to transfer a TV signal in DVD quality. The quality is
superior to SVHS and CVBS.
RS-232 connection A RS-232 connection allows you to connect equipment to the receiver
which supports the RS-232 protocol.
SCART cable A SCART cable is also known as ‘Peritel’ cable and is commonly used in
Europe to connect the audio and video equipment. A fully furnished SCART cable has 21 wires which is at both sides finished with a 21-pin connector.
SVHS SVHS means Super-VHS and is superior to a CVBS signal but less then
a RGB signal. Normally it is a single cable consisting of four wires because the black/white (luminance) is separated from the colour (chrominance).
Transmission mode The COFDM technology spreads the data between many carrier waves.
The 2k mode has 1705 carriers for higher interference environments and the 8k mode has 6817 carriers for lower interference environments.
UHF-band Parts of this band (471MHz-860MHz) are dedicated for TV and Radio
broadcasting.
VHF-band Parts of this band (171-470MHz) are dedicated for TV and Radio
broadcasting.
