PREFACE
1. INTRODUCTION
This manual is part of the documentation set that is delivered with your EchoStar Digital Satellite Receiver (motorized models). This manual gives an explanation and an instruction on the use of the EchoNAV user interface.
This manual describes all features of the EchoNAV user interface family for the:
DVR-7000 HDD, DVR-5000 HDD.
EchoNAV is a family of user interfaces which are dedicated for a specific range of digital satellite receivers. The EchoNAV user interface consists of:
EchoNAV HDD, for the receivers that have a hard disk drive;
EchoNAV Motorized, for the receivers that have an internal positioner;
EchoNAV Fixed, for the receivers that have only fixed dish and DiSEqC 1.2 capabilities.
Every digital satellite receiver is equipped with different options. Some options are related to the EchoNAV user interface, others are related to physical options as Common Interface slots, embedded (Viaccess) smart card reader, display or not, etc.
All sections are applicable to your receiver unless otherwise indicated by the respective option.

2.1. THREE WAYS WE MADE SATELLITE TV EASIER FOR YOU
Since EchoStar started making satellite TV receivers about twenty years ago we've been getting suggestions about how we can make things better.
In the early 1980s the good channels on satellite were spread across many satellites and going from one channel to the next was too complicated for many people. We thought we could make it a lot simpler by building the antenna positioner control unit into we invented the first satellite receiver with an integrated antenna positioner.

Then a few years later when scrambling started on some channels you had to hook up an additional decoder box. We figured we could make it easier to use (and cheaper) by putting the decoder into the receiver. So we came up with the first Integrated Receiver Decoder. (These days most receivers sold throughout the world have some kind of decoder built in.)
In the early 1990s the number of channels started to grow rapidly from just over a dozen worthwhile channels to several dozen to well over a hundred. In 1993 EchoStar introduced its flagship model LT-8700 set the standard in the industry with its powerful easy to use features. One of these features was to create customized lists of channels which allowed you to categorize channels according to their type. So for example you could put all news channels together in one list, and all film channels in another, and all sports channels in a third. Considering that there were over 150 channels in total this made it easy to locate the channels you wanted to watch.
2.2. 12 ½ HOURS OF NON-STOP ZAPPING?
Fast forward to 2002. A basic satellite TV installation today receives over 1,000 TV channels. More ambitious installations offer up close to 3,000 TV channels and at least 1,000 radio channels. Amazing. Many consumers these days enjoy dozens of movie channels, perhaps six or eight worthwhile sports channels, a handful of good music TV channels, and of course more news than any news junkie can cope with.
That we have progressed from a few dozen channels to a few thousand in just over a decade is a phenomenal development. But how are people dealing with so many channels? Do you watch TV in a different way today than ten years ago?
The answer, as we heard loud and clear from all your letters, e-mails and phone calls, is that the two most frequently pressed keys on every remote control are still channel-up and
EchoNAV User Interface Page I
Page 4
Preface
channel-down. There may be two dozen different keys on the remote but after pressing the power-on key most of the time it is just zapping through the channel list.
And zapping, and zapping and ..... zapping. If you spend just 15 seconds on each channel
and zap non-stop it will take you 12 ½ hours to go through 3,000 TV channels. Besides the wear and tear on your up / down keys, not to mention your thumb, this is nobody's idea of fun especially since most of these channels are completely uninteresting to you. In fact there may be no more than 200 or 300 channels worth watching (only about one hour of continuous
zapping .....).
There was one other change and that was that with so many channels you wanted the possibility to zap through a single type of channel. For example if there is some breaking news story you might want to zap from one news channel to the next to the next without seeing cartoon channels, or music TV channels. Similarly when you want to relax for the evening you want to go though your movie channels without bumping into a football match or the latest reports from Wall Street.
2.3. ZAPPING ONLY WHAT YOU WANT TO ZAP: ECHONAV
To deal with all these channels and the changing way that people watch TV, the software engineers at EchoStar have resurrected the tried and true channel list approach of the venerable LT-8700 and enhanced it to deal with the demanding requirements of today's world. We call this new system EchoNAV and this is included in all of our new line of receivers.
EchoNAV gives you eight lists for your TV channels and eight lists for your radio channels. So now for example you can put all your sports channels into a single list. When you want to watch sports just select your that list and zap till you find the match you want.
If you want to keep the kids entertained then pick the children's programming list, give them the remote control, and fear not that they may wander where they ought not to.
Looking for an update on some news item? Zap your news channels list till you come across it. You won't be wasting your time flicking past all the general entertainment channels in your quest to find your information.
But we also realized that in some households it makes more sense to divide up the channels per person - ‘John's List’ or ‘Mom's List’ for example. So in EchoNAV we give you complete flexibility in renaming each of the eight lists (you use an on-screen keyboard to create the name you want), and with a capacity of 250 channels in each list, there's more than enough room to hold all your favorites. In most households you can give one list to each person and still have a few leftover (make a neighbor happy?)
Having lots of lists is particularly nice in radio mode. Put your pop music channels into one list and your classical radio into another. Then zap. It is striking how much nicer it is when you don't constantly tune to a type of music that you don't really want to listen too.

2.4. HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF VIDEO RECORDINGS
The power and user-friendliness of EchoNAV is hardly limited to organizing and zapping lists of TV and radio channels. For those satellite receivers with a build-in hard disk drive such as the DVR-7000, it is possible to record many hours of TV programs. It is much simpler to record on a DVR than it used to be on a normal VCR. Just press the record button and you instantly record the channel you are watching. The simplicity of setting a timer to record something in the future is even more striking: in the Electronic Program Guide screen just highlight the program you want to record (up to 4 weeks in advance!), choose the timer function, and the start time, stop time and program name will all be automatically set.
Initial feedback shows that people are recording far more frequently than they ever used to with a VCR. Now consider that the capacity of hard-disk drives is growing rapidly. It is expected that within a few years total recording capacity could reach over two hundred hours. That's a lot of content - several shelves of video-cassettes in today's terms.
Page II EchoStar International Corporation
Page 5
So now comes the question of how to file all these recordings in such a way that you can find what you want to watch without having to employ a librarian! Again the answer is the EchoNAV lists. Again eight lists are dedicated to hold your recordings, and what's more, when setting a timer you can even specify the list in which you want the recording to be stored. So for example you can make sure the film recordings are stored in the Film recordings list, or that football matches are stored in the sports recordings list. Children's recordings can also be grouped together so that they can browse freely without worries - somewhat like letting them loose in the children's section of the bookstore.
2.5. EIGHT PLAYLISTS FOR YOUR DIGITAL MUSIC JUKEBOX
Throwing a party but you don't want to be bothered with changing the CDs after every song? EchoStar's DVR-7000 has a digital audio jukebox which can store up to 500 songs. Five hundred songs is somewhat more than 15 hours of music and while that is plenty to cover most parties the real beauty is again in the lists.
In this case EchoNAV gives you eight playlists that you can fill up with the songs you want to listen to. Pick them from your master list by album, or group or type of music and drop them into the play list in whatever order you want. Create playlists for dance parties, romantic dinners, or just about any occasion when you want to hear top quality music without constantly having to change the CD.
2.6. POWERFUL AND USER-FRIENDLY: ECHONAV

2. USE THE FAVORITE LISTS
Navigation and use of the favorite lists are the same as for the all channels and current satellite list as described before. The main difference is that you can setup and organize the favorite lists as required. EchoStar has already pre-named the favorite lists to help you getting started. It is however possible to change the name of the favorite list to something that is meaningful to you.
For adding channels quickly, you can use the group and sort option first to limit the amount of channels where you want to choose from. As an example, now it is possible to add all sport related channels in one step to the Sports TV favorite list.
Note that for each mode, a separate number of favorite lists is available.

2. EXPLANATION OF USED TERMINOLOGY
C-band A frequency range (3.70-4.20 GHz) used for satellite
broadcasts.
CCITT An European committee of the international
Telecommunications Union and makes recommendations for the distribution of telephone and data distribution.
Clarke Belt The Clarke Belt is a dedicated satellite orbit in which
satellites remain in a fixed position relative to the Earth’s surface.
CI-module/CAM Both names are used for these modules. These modules are
PCMCIA cards with a slot in which you can insert a smart card.
Common Interface (CI) A DVB standard which defines the software and hardware
requirements for condition access systems.
Conditional Access A system which is used by service providers to control the
subscriber’s access to certain services, programs and events like Pay TV.
DBS band A signal frequency range (11.70-12.40ghz) intended for
direct TV broadcast by satellite channels.
Decoder A unit that is connected to a satellite receiver in order to
unscramble a picture that is protected by encryption.
Digital Audio Broadcasting Standard which describes the method of transmitting digital
audio.
DiSEqC A standard through which it is possible to let a DiSEqC
compatible receiver send a signal over the RF cable to a switching device to switch between different LNBs or dishes. The DiSEqC uses the 22 kHz signal to control the switching device.
DVB A broadcast standard for digital radio and television, using
MPEG-2 compression. DVB is being supported by all European manufacturers and broadcasters.
EPG A electronic program guide that comes with the broadcast of
a particular satellite, Note that every station fills the EPG differently or not, so differences in the EPG are not necessarily receiver errors.
FEC Is an invisible part of a broadcast.which makes sure that
possible errors in the reception of the satellite signal are corrected.
Feedhorn A part of the dish which collects the signals from the dish.
The signal is then fed to the LNB(F).
Ferrite A remote controlled device that determines the polarity of the
signal which is fed to the LNB. The ferrite is more or less an
electro-magnetic polarizer. Fixed Dish A dish antenna that is pointed at one particular satellite. Free-To-Air broadcast An unscrambled broadcast which you can view without
additional payments to a service provider. Frequency band A frequency band is a range of frequencies which are
dedicate to a certain usage. In the satellite area, commonly
known bands are the C-band and the Ku-band. High Definition Television A digital television format, which combines high-resolution
video and theater like sound to create a movie theater quality
TV viewing experience. Horizontal In the satellite industry, horizontal is used to indicate the
direction in which the received signal is polarized. Normally
you will find that it is abbreviated as H.

Glossary
KU-band A frequency range (10.70-18.00 GHz) used by most
European TV satellites.
LNB A device behind the feedhorn which processes the signal
into a format which is understood by the receiver for further processing
LNBF A LNB with an integrated Feedhorn. So the LNBF comes as
one single unit.
MPEG The Moving Picture Experts group is founded by the ISO to
provide a basis for the coding and compression of moving pictures. MPEG has now become a standard method for the digital transmission of video and sound using less bandwidth than the analog transmission method.
Near Video-On-Demand Multi channel system broadcasting many copies of a film
with staggered start times so a complete film is always available to a viewer with a short waiting period.
Network With respect to the receiver, a network (also known as a
bouquet) is a set of programs that is offered by a single service provider.
NTSC USA video standard with image format 4:3, 625 lines, 60 Hz
and 4 MHz bandwidth with a total of 6 MHz video channel width.
PAL European video standard with image format 4:3, 625 lines,
50 Hz and 4 MHz bandwidth with a total of 8 MHz video channel width.
PID MPEG-2 transmits the audio and video information in so-
called packages. At the beginning of each package is an identifier (PID) present which tells the receiver what to do with the received information. Satellite receivers use normally four types of PID, these are VPID (video PID), APID (audio PID), Program Clock Reference (PCR PID) and data PID (EPG information).
Parental lock A feature which is introduced to give you the possibility to
‘lock’ or ‘hide’ several functions of the receiver to prevent unauthorized persons (children) to view broadcasts that are not suitable for them. The use of the parental lock requires a PIN-code. With this PIN-code you can change or unlock the locked or hided recordings and channels.
Pay-Per-Channel With this feature, the viewer has to pay a certain price per
month (or other period) to receive all programs of a certain channel.
Pay-Per-View Conditional access service where the user is able to buy one
particular program from a particular service provider.
Pay TV With Pay TV, the consumer has to pay for certain programs
or services.
PIN-code The PIN-code or Personal Identification Number is
necessary to make use of the parental lock feature. The PIN code has four digits which can be set personally.
Polarization Broadcasts are done in a particular frequency band. To make
maximum use of a frequency band and bring you the maximum number of programs, the broadcasts are polarized in different ways to fit as much as possible programs into one frequency band.
Polarizer A remote controlled device that determines the polarity of the
signal which is fed to the LNB.
Polarmount A motorized dish antenna mount which enables a dish to
point at every ‘visible’ satellite on the Clarke Belt.

3. EXPLANATION OF THE SEARCH MODES
FOR DIGITAL
In the various menu pages you can make a selection from various search modes. The search mode gives the possibility to scan a satellite or transponder in a particular manner. The search modes are identified as: All In this mode the built-in database is used to select the available transponders.
The digital channels that belong to these transponders are searched for and added to the all channel list.
FTA Inthismodethebuilt-indatabaseisusedtoonlysearchfortheavailable
FTA channels which are then added to the all channel list. In the real world it seems that the service providers do not always accurately code their channels with a scrambled or FTA code. For this reason you may find that some searched channels are scrambled. Also there is a possibility that scrambled channels are coded as FTA. These channels will then be missed out because of the erroneous code.
Network In this mode the built-in database or information from the received stream is
used to search for the transponders that are included with the currently received network. The digital channels that belong to this network are searched for and added to the all channel list.
TP In this mode the built-in database or information from the received stream is
used to search for or scan in the selected transponder. The digital channels that belong to this transponder only are searched for or scanned in and added to the all channel list.
Digital In this mode the built-in database is used to search for the available digital
channels. The digital channels are then added to the all channel list. The digital channels are shown as white channel names for easy recognition.
Digital IF In this mode the currently received satellite is scanned for digital channels. The
digital channels, within the tuner bandwidth and selected symbol rates are
