EchoStar User Interface
PREFACE
INTRODUCTION
The EchoStar User Interface is a family of user interfaces which are dedicated for a specific
range of satellite receivers. Every satellite receiver is equipped with different options. Some
options are related to the EchoStar User Interface, others are related to physical options as
Common Interface slots, Embedded reader, display or not, etc.
Please note that this user manual contains the information for the most comprehensive
model. Sometimes you f ind that an op tio n is no t ava ila ble on you r rece iv er whic h me ans t hat
you can ignore the related descriptions and instructions. Please refer to the specifications of
your receiver to find the available options that are present in your model.
DOCUMENTATION
This user manual is part of the documentation set that comes with your EchoStar satellite
receiver. The documentation set contains the user manuals:
■ User Manual - Receiver Description;
■ User Manual - EchoStar User Interface - Fixed.
Sometimes you can also find a Manual update which describes the last minute changes to
either the receiver itself or the EchoStar User Interface which are not described in the user
manuals that come with your EchoStar satellite receiver.
INTENDEDUSE
The receiver is intended to be installed for private domestic use. This receiver has not been
designed for other types of usage (including but not limited to commercial or head-end
installations), therefore EchoStar Internation al Corpo ration makes no warranties with res pec t
to product performance or reliability in such installations.
This documentati on set is int end ed for a nyone who use s an Ec hoStar satel lit e receive r. It can
be used by both first-ti me and ex perienced users of sate llite rece ivers who w ant to in stall, use
and maintain their receiver.
This user manual gives an explanation and an instruction on the use of the EchoStar user

interface and is divided into separate sections and chapters. For easy access to the
information, a clear table of content and an index are provided.
If your rece iver has conditional access capabilities:
For pay-services, please on ly use Comm on Interface (CI) module s and the re lated Smart card
which are approved by the service provider of the encrypted program you want to receive.
Only this will enable the receiver to work properly.
Anomalies can occur when an unapproved CI-module and/or Smartcard is use d. EchoStar
can not and will not accept any responsibility for the performance of such CI-modules and/or
smartcards. If you use an unapproved CI-module and/or Smartcard, EchoStar is no longer
able to provide any assistance or support. Use of an unapproved CI-module and/or
Smartcard will void any warranty claim. If you have any doubt which CI-modules are
approved, please ask your service provider for assistance.

3.TO INSTALL YOUR RECEIVER FOR THE FIRST TIME
This section assumes that the dish installation is completed and operational and your
receiver is connected to your TV and other equipment with suitable cables. Note that your
receiver is pre-programmed for a fixed dish installation with a universal LNBF. If you have
another dish installation (multiple LNBs or motorized), additional settings are required.
NOTE
For receivers that are connected with an UHF cable, make sure that the TV is set to
UHF channel 38 (607.25Mhz). If the channel number on the TV and receiver are not
the same, you will have a distorted or no image at all.
For more information, please refer to the user manual of the TV.
NOTE
For receivers that are connected with a SVHS cable, make sure that the audio to the
TV is connected with either the S/PDIF or the AUDIO L/R connector.
For more information, please refer to the user manual of the TV/VCR.
NOTE
From the next step onwards, the procedure is divided in different installation
procedures. The given procedures are; Fixed, Multiple LNBs, DiSEqC1.2 and GoTo X.
■ Fixed means install a single dish with an Universal LNB;
■ Multiple LNBs means install a dish with multiple LNBs or multiple dishes;
■ DiSEqC1.2 means install a moveable dish according the DiSEqC1.2 spec;
■ GoTo X means install a moveable dish that is GoTo X compatible.

PIDMPEG-2 transmits the audio and video information in so-called
packages. Each package has an identifier (PID) present which tells
the receiver what to do with the received information. Satellite
receivers use normally four types of PID, these are VPID (Video
PID), APID (Audio PID), Program Clock Reference (PCR PID) and
data PID (EPG).
Parental controlA feature which is introduced to give you the possibility to ‘Lock’
several functions of the receiver to prevent unauthorized persons
(children) to view broadcasts that are not suitable for them. The
use of the Parental control requires a PIN-code. With this PINcode you can change or unlock the locked channels.
Pay-Per-ChannelWith this feature, the viewer has to pay a certai n price per month
(or other period) to receive all programs of a certain channel.
Pay-Per-ViewConditional access service where the user is able to buy one
particular program from a particular service provider.
Pay TVWith Pay TV, the consumer has to pay for certain programs or
services.
PIN-codeThe PIN-code or Personal Identification Number is necessary to
make use of th e pare ntal l ock fea ture. The PIN-code has fou r digit s
which can be set personally.
PolarityBroadcasts are done in a particular frequency band. To make
maximum use of a frequency band and bring you the maximum
number of programs, the broadcasts are polarized in different
ways to fit as much as possible prog rams into one freque ncy ban d.
ReceiverUnit which takes signals from a dish and converts them so they
can appear on radio and TV.
RGBRGB is used to transfer a TV signal in DVD quality. The quality is
superior to SVHS and CVBS.
SATWith respect to the receiver, a satellite is a broadcast station, for
satellite radio and TV, positioned on the Clarke Belt.
SECAMSECAM (Systeme Electronic Pour Couleur Avec Memoire) is
almost the same as PAL. It is used in France, Russia, and part s of
Africa and Eastern Europe.
Service providerA service provider is a company or organization that collects and
offers you a number of programs and services. Some are free of
charge and others you have to pay for.
SmartcardA card that contains a ‘smart’ code and is used to de-scramble
encrypted broadcasts when placed in a decoder or receiver with a
built-in decoder.
StreamThe signal which is received from the transponder which contains
the together with the video signal, additional information that the
receiver needs in order to process the received signal correctly.
SVHSSVHS means Super-VHS and is superior to a CVBS signal but
less then a RGB signal. Normally it is a single cable consisting of
four wires because the black/white (luminance) is separated from
the color (chrominance).
Symbol rateInvisible information which tells the receiver at which speed (rate)
the transponder sends the digital information (symbols). The
receiver must be able to handle the Symbol rate to process the
signal correctly into a correct image.
TP Equipment inside a satellite responsible for receiving a single
