The Detcon Model 1010SS-N4X consists of 3 major assemblies:
• The NEMA 4X (304 stainless steel) control enclosure.
• The Model 10 single channel digital control modules.
• The remote mount gas sensor assemblies.
The NEMA 4X control enclosure is detailed in Section 1.0 of this manual, control modules in Section 2.0 of the
Detcon Model 10 “Single Channel Digital Control Module” manual, and applicable sensor assemblies in Section
3.0 of the Detcon Microsafe “TP-524C Hydrogen Sulfide Sensor” manual.
1.1 DESCRIPTION
This Detcon Model 1010SS-N4X control enclosure, along with Model 10 digital control modules, is designed to
serve as a host assembly for up to ten remote mount gas detection sensor assemblies. The controllers provide outputs to drive din-rail mounted relays that trigger strobes, horns, and provide dry contact outputs to a remote DCS.
The control enclosure is rated NEMA 4X, which is by definition rain tight, and therefore suitable for outdoor location in electrically non-hazardous environments. The enclosure can be used for many different applications. It protects internal equipment against splashing water, seepage of water, falling or hose directed water and severe external
condensation.
Construction features include:
‹ continuously welded seams, finished smooth
‹ robotically applied urethane gasket
‹ continuous stainless steel hinge with removable pin
‹ stainless steel captive clamps
‹ hasp and staple for padlocking
‹ door and body stiffeners
‹ external mounting brackets
‹ front door viewing window
‹ stainless steel hub entries
The single channel modular design supports application f lexibility wherein multiple function gas detection systems
can be configured in any combination up to ten channels. All control modules are plug-in front panel accessible
for easy maintenance and repair. The system is powered by VAC line power and/or 24VDC unless otherwise specified at time of order.
The control enclosure includes a panel mount circuit breaker that also acts as a power switch. Discrete output terminal strips located on din rails, provide connections for sensor terminations, power input, and dry contact relay
outputs. The 115VAC input is protected with a 20A circuit breaker. The sensor terminations utilize a blade type
terminal on the power connection to allow disconnection of power to individual sensors. All relay outputs have
fuse terminals to protect the equipment connected to them.

Detcon Model 1010SS-N4X has a built-in 7 amp-hour battery backup circuit designed to provide uninterruptible
24 VDC power (Figure 1). The system includes a 117 VAC/24 VDC power supply that acts as a battery charger.
In operation, 117 VAC (L1, L2 and GND) is connected to a terminal strip to provide power to the power supply.
The 117VAC is also provided as an output via adjacent terminals. The power supply, in turn, keeps the batteries
charged as well as provides 24 VDC to all internal circuits.
The 24 VDC power output rating is 6.25 amps max. Upon loss of 117 VAC power, the 24VDC output is obtained
solely from the internal batteries. In the event that the batteries become depleted, the low voltage cutoff circuit
will disconnect the batteries from the circuit to prevent damage to them. The cutoff voltage is approximately 21
VDC. Once 117 VAC input is restored and the batteries will begin to recharge.
Note that as long as 117 VAC is applied, the 24 VDC output will be available regardless of the charge state of the
batteries.

K11 - Time delay relay for horns (warning & critical)
K12 - Warning relay for strobes and RTU
K13 - Critical relay for RTU
K14 - Fault relay for strobes and RTU
Warning Level Alarm
1. For warning alarm, the normally energized relays in the control module will change state and apply
coil voltage to non-energized alarm relays.
2. The warning relay for connection to a RTU will energize.
3. The relay controlling the blue strobe for the sensor in warning alarm will energize.
4. The relay controlling the common blue strobes will energize.
5. The time delay relay controlling the horns will energize for a number of minutes determined by the setting of the relay.
6. The time delay relay can be acknowledged through a push button switch located on the front door of
the system.
Critical Level Alarm
1. For critical alarm, the normally energized relays in the control module will change state and apply
coil voltage to non-energized alarm relays.
2. The critical relay for connection to a RTU will energize.
3. The time delay relay controlling the horns will energize for a number of minutes determined by the setting of the relay.
4. The time delay relay can be acknowledged through a push button switch located on the front door of
the system.
5. The time delay relay will energize even if it had been acknowledged on the warning alarm. In order for
this acknowledge to happen, each control module must have its appropriate configuration switch in the
correct position.
Fault Alarm
1. For fault alarm, the normally energized relays in the control module are wired in series so that when
any controller goes into fault, or upon loss of power, the relay controlling the white strobes and the RTU
will become de-energized.

2. Connect 117VAC input to the terminal strip labeled “VAC IN” (L1, N, EARTH). If applicable, connect
3. If applicable, terminate earth ground to the earth ground lug located on the lower left of the panel.
4. Refer to installation and wiring detail of remote mount sensor assembly in Section 3.0. Terminate field wiring
5. Install audible/visual alarm devices per wiring Drawing #4120.
6. If applicable, terminate the discrete 4-20 mA outputs to external device(s). Terminals are labeled “4-20 Out” (+

and Shield). If applicable, terminate RS-485 Shield to Earth Ground via the jumper tab located to the left of
the RS-485 terminals. Place the jumper on the bottom 2 contacts to tie RS-485 shield to Earth Ground or
place the jumper tab on the top two terminals for storage.
Upon completion of all field wiring per Figure 3 below, depress the top of the circuit breaker switch located on the
front panel. Be sure to push the switch portion of the breaker in all the way. It will make a slight snapping sound
to indicated it is properly engaged. Note that each Model 10 controller digital display illuminates. Varying readings
may occur during sensor warm-up. A 10 second alarm delay will occur on power up. Refer to Section 3.0 for additional sensor start-up detail.

1.7 MAINTENANCE & REPAIR
The Detcon Model 1010SS-N4X’s modular design allows for minimum down time during maintenance and/or
repair.
M
A Model 10 control module may be changed by simply loosening its mounting screw and sliding the module out
of its card cage. See Section 2.0 of the Detcon Model 10 “Single Channel Digital Control Module” manual for
more information on the 10 control module.
C
The 3 amp panel mount circuit breaker acts as both a resetable fuse device and a power switch. Push the top of the
breaker button in completely until you hear it snap in place to power up the 1010SS-N4X. Push the bottom of the
breaker button to turn power off. If the circuit breaker should trip due to a high current or overvoltage, the switch
will trip into a centered position. Push the top of the button back in securely to reset.
Replacement of the circuit breaker is accomplished by: removing the 10 screws that secure the 1010SS-N4X face
plate; disconnect the plug from its PCB mounted header; remove the wires from the plug; remove the locking washer; push the circuit breaker out of the 1010SS-N4X face plate and then reassembly with the new component.
P
Replacement of the power supply is accomplished by: removing the 10 screws that secure the 1010SS-N4X face
plate; disconnecting the breaker plug from its header; disconnecting the two power supply plugs from their respective headers; removing the three screws that hold the power supply bracket the PCB motherboard; removing the
four screws that hold the power supply bracket to the power supply; disconnecting the wires from the power supply
and then reassembling with the new power supply.
