M300 STARTER is a me mber of a family of pro fessional chargers f rom CTEK SWEDEN A B. It represents th e state-of-t he-art tech nology for batte ry charging. A M 300 STARTER will pr olong the lifetim e of your battery. Rea d this user manual an d follow the i nstructions c arefully before u sing the charger.
SAFETY
The charge r is designed to cha rge 12V lead-acid b atteries from 1. 2 to 32Ah. However, the charger c an maintain batte ries up to 100Ah. Do n ot use the charger fo r any other purpos e. Use safety g lasses and turn yo ur head away when conn ecting or disco nnecting a batte ry. Battery a cid is corosive. R inse immediatel y with water if acid c omes into contac t with skin or eyes. Seek med ical advice. Make sure that t he cable is not pinc hed or in contact w ith warm surfa ces or sharp edge s. While char ging, a battery c an emit explosive g ases, so it is impor tant to avoid spark s in the immediate a rea. Always prov ide for proper vent ilation during c harging. Avoid coveri ng the charger. Make sure that t he electrica l cable does not co me into contact w ith water. Never charg e a frozen batter y. Never charg e a damaged batter y. Do not place t he charger on the ba ttery while ch arging. The electr ical connect ion must fulfil t he national heav y current requir ements. Check the c abling in the charg er before use. Make su re there are no crac ks in the cabling or in the protec tive covering. A c harger with damag ed cables may not be u sed. Always che ck that the charge r has gone over to mainte nance charging m ode before leaving the charge r unattended and c onnected for lon g periods. If the c harger had not gone ov er to maintenan ce charging with in 3 days, this is an indi cation of a proble m. In this case the charger mu st be disconnect ed manually. All batter ies fail sooner o r later. A battery tha t fails during char ging is normally t aken care of by the charge rs advanced con trol, but cert ain uncommon err ors in the batter y can still aris e. Don’t leave th e battery charg er unattended fo r a longer period of t ime. Only mount t he charger on a flat s urface. This equipm ent may not be used by chi ldren or by those who c an not read and unde rstand the manual if t hey are not superv ised by a responsib le person who ca n guarantee that the battery c harger is being us ed in a safe manner. Store a nd use the batter y charger out of the reach of chi ldren. Make sure that c hildren do not play w ith the batter y charger.
BATTERY TYPES
The follow ing recommenda tions should only b e considered as gu idelines. In the eve nt of uncert ainty always refer t o the battery ma nufacturer’s re commendations . M300 STARTE R is suitable for cha rging all types o f 12V lead-acid bat teries: open bat teries, MF, AGM and most GEL-bat teries. Batter y sizes from 1.2 to 3 2Ah. The charge r can maintain batteri es up to 100Ah.
CHARGING
Chargin g batteries m ounted in a vehi cle:
1. The power cor d should be disco nnected before c onnecting or disc onnecting the b attery leads.
2. Identif y the pole that is gr ounded (attache d to the chassis). Grou nd is normally co nnected to the negati ve terminal.
3. Charging a n egatively groun ded battery. Conn ect the red wire to t he positive pole of t he battery a nd the black cabl e to the vehicle’s chas sis. Be careful not t o connect the bla ck cable in the vicini ty of a fuel pipe or th e battery.
4. Charging a p ositively groun ded battery. Conn ect the black wire t o the negative pol e of the battery a nd the red cable to t he vehicle's chas sis. Be careful not t o connect the red c able in the vicinit y of a fuel pipe or the bat tery.
Chargin g of a battery n ot connecte d to a vehicle:
1. The power cor d should be disco nnected before c onnecting or disc onnecting the b attery leads.
2. Connect t he red wire to the po sitive pole of the ba ttery and the bl ack cable to the ne gative pole.
Connec ting the provid ed cables wi th eyelet term inals:
Make sure that t he cable is not bein g pinched or in cont act with warm sur faces or sharp e dges. When the ca ble is mounted on the b attery, it should n ot be connected to t he charger. Connec t the eyelet ter minals to the batt ery's poles - th e red cable to the po sitive pole and th e black cable to the negat ive pole. After th is, the quick cont act can be connec ted.
Reverse Pol arity Prote ction
If the batte ry cables are c onnected incor rectly, the revers e polarity prot ection will make su re that the cha rger and the batte ry are not damaged . In this case, the re d warning lamp will be lit.
Start c harging
1. Once you have ch ecked that the bat tery leads have bee n connected cor rectly, you can sta rt charging by c onnecting the c harger to the wall so cket. If the batte ry leads have been c onnected incorre ctly the polari ty reversing prot ection will ensu re that neither the c harger nor the bat tery will be damag ed. The fault indic ating lamp will then com e on. If this is the cas e, start from point 1 under ” Connecting th e charger...”
2. The charg ing lamp or the mainte nance charging la mp will now come on. When t he maintenanc e charging lamp c omes on the batter y is fully charg ed. When the batte ry’s voltage drops the ch arger will send a pu lse to the batter y. The pulse length dep ends on how much the voltage has d ropped. The char ger can be connec ted for months.
3. If nothing h appens. If none of th e lamps come on thi s may be due to the conne ction to the battery o r chassis is poor or t hat the batter y is faulty or has a too l ow terminal volta ge. Another cause may be a la ck of voltage in the wa ll socket.
4. Charging c an be stopped at any ti me by disconnecti ng the charger ’s power cord. Always disconne ct the power cord b efore disconnec ting the batter y leads. When you st op charging a
battery  tted in a vehicle yo u should always disc onnect the bat tery lead from th e chassis before
you disconn ect the other bat tery lead.
5. If the char ging lamp and mainte nance charging l amp alternately a sh the reason for th is is
the follow ing:
If the lamps  ash a few times per sec ond then the batt ery is probably s ulphated. If the lam p ashes mor e than 60 minutes th e battery shoul d be replaced. If the ashi ng occurs with a few m inutes’ interva l then the batter y has a high self-d ischarge
and may need to b e replaced.
CHARGING PHASES
M300 STARTE R has a four step fully au tomatic chargin g cycle. At the star t of charging the battery c harger deliver s maximum curren t to the battery an d the battery vo ltage increases constant ly to a set level of 14.4V. At this poi nt the voltage will b e regulated and kept c onstant while the ch arging current i s successively l owered. Once the c harging curren t has dropped below 0.4A th e charger switch es to maintenance c harging. If the batte ry is loaded and th e battery’s ter minal voltage dro ps to 12.9V the charge r automatically swit ches back to the beg inning of the four ste p cycle. The charg er requires a revers e
voltage fr om the battery o f at least 6V to start t he charging cycl e, this means that if th e battery is so deeply di scharged that th e terminal volta ge is lower than 6V the c harger cannot ch arge the
battery i n question. A norm al discharged bat tery has a termi nal voltage of 10.5V.
Chargin g phases:
Desulph ation - Desulph ation with pulsin g for sulphated bat teries. Bulk - Main ch arge when 80% of ch arging takes plac e. The charger deli vers a constant cu rrent
until the ter minal voltage has r isen to the set level . Absorp tion - Complete c harge up to virtua lly 100%. The term inal voltage is mai ntained at the set level. Dur ing this phase the c urrent drops suc cessively so the t erminal voltag e does not become too hi gh. If the absorpt ion phase has been in pr ogress for more t han 18 hours the char ger switches t o maintenance char ging. This funct ion prevents damag e if the battery i s faulty. Pulse - Maint enance chargin g. State of charge va ries between 95% a nd 100%. The batte ry receives a p ulse when the volt age drops. Keeps the b attery in per fect conditio n when it is not used. The ch arger can be conn ected for months at a t ime. If possible, c heck the water level i n the batter y.
TEMPERATURE PROTECTION
M300 STARTE R is protected fro m being overheated . The power will be red uced if the ambie nt temperatu re is raised.
MAINTENANCE
The charge r is maintenance fr ee. Note that disas sembly of the charg er is not permitt ed and will void th e warranty. If the pow er cord is damaged, t he charger must be l eft to the resell er for maintenanc e. The case can be c leaned with a sof t damp cloth and mild c leanser. The charg er should be dis connected fro m the power while cl eaning.
EQUIPMENT
M300 STARTE R is delivered with a s et of battery lead s with battery p ole clamps and a set of battery l eads with eyelet ter minals.
