Thismachineisaprecisionpieceofpowerequipment,notaplaything. Therefore,exerciseextremecautionatalltimes.Thismachinehasbeen
designedto performonejob:tomowgrass.Donotuseit foranyother purpose.

Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesandclose-fittingslacksandshirts. Shirtsandpantsthatcoverthearmsandlegsandsteel-toedshoesare recommended.Neveroperatethismachineinbarefeet,sandals,slipperyor light-weight(e.g.canvas)shoes.
Donotputhandsorfeetnearrotatingpartsorunderthecuttingdeck. Contactwith bladecanamputatefingers,hands,toesandfeet.
Amissingordamageddischargecovercancausebladecontactorthrown objectinjuries.
Manyinjuriesoccurasaresultofthemowerbeingpulledoverthefoot duringafall causedbyslippingortripping.Donotholdontothemowerif youarefalling:releasethehandleimmediately.
Neverpullthemowerbacktowardyouwhileyouarewalking.Ifyoumust backthemowerawayfromawallorobstructionfirstlookdownandbehind toavoidtrippingandthenfollowthesesteps:
a. Stepbackfrommowerto fullyextendyourarmsforward. b. Besureyouarewellbalancedwith surefooting.
c. Pullthemowerbackslowly,nomorethanhalfwaytowardyou. d. Repeatthesestepsasneeded.
Donotoperatethemowerwhileundertheinfluenceofalcoholordrugs. Donotengagetheself-propelledmechanismonmachinessoequipped
whilestartingengine. Thebladecontrolhandleisasafetydevice.Neverattemptto bypassits
operation.Doingsomakesthesafetydeviceinoperativeandmayresultin personalinjurythroughcontactwith therotatingblade.Thebladecontrol handlemustoperateeasilyinbothdirectionsandautomaticallyreturnto the disengagedpositionwhenreleased.
Neveroperatethemowerinwetgrass.Alwaysbesureofyourfooting. A slipandfallcancauseseriouspersonalinjury.Ifyoufeelyouarelosingyour footing,releasethebladecontrolhandleimmediatelyandthebladewill stoprotatingwithinthreeseconds.
Mowonlyindaylightorgoodartificiallight.Walk,neverrun. Stopthebladewhencrossinggraveldrives,walksorroads.
Iftheequipmentshouldstarttovibrateabnormally,stoptheengineand checkimmediatelyforthecause.Vibrationisgenerallyawarningoftrouble.
Shuttheengineoffandwaituntilthebladecomestoacompletestopbefore removingthegrasscatcheroruncloggingthechute.Thecuttingblade
continuestorotateforafewsecondsafterthebladecontrolisreleased. Neverplaceanypartofthebodyinthebladeareauntilyouaresurethe
bladehasstoppedrotating. Neveroperatemowerwithoutpropertrailshield,dischargecover,grass
catcher,bladecontrolhandleorothersafetyprotectivedevicesinplaceand working.Neveroperatemowerwithdamagedsafetydevices.Failuretodo socanresultinpersonalinjury.
Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcancauseaburn.Donottouch. Neverattempttomakeawheelorcuttingheightadjustmentwhilethe
engineisrunning. Onlyusepartsandaccessoriesmadeforthismachinebythemanufactureras
listedinthePartspagesofthisOperator'sManual.Failuretodosocanresult inpersonalinjury.
Whenstartingengine,pullcordslowlyuntilresistanceisfelt,thenpull rapidly.Rapidretractionofstartercord(kickback)willpullhandandarm towardenginefasterthanyoucanletgo.Brokenbones,fractures,bruisesor sprainscouldresult.
Ifsituationsoccurwhicharenotcoveredinthismanual,usecareandgood
judgement.
SLOPE OPERATION
Slopesareamajorfactorrelatedto slipandfall accidents,whichcanresultinsevere injury.Operationonslopesrequiresextracaution.Ifyoufeeluneasyonaslope,do notmowit. Foryoursafety,usetheSlopeGuideincludedaspartofthismanualto measureslopesbeforeoperatingthismachineonaslopedor hillyarea.Iftheslope isgreaterthan 15degrees,donotmowit.
Do:
Mowacrossthefaceofslopes;neverupanddown.Exerciseextremecaution whenchangingdirectiononslopes.
Watchforholes,ruts,rocks,Nddenobjects,orbumpswhichcancauseyou tosliportrip.Tallgrasscanhideobstacles.
Alwaysbesureofyourfooting.Aslipandfallcancauseseriouspersonal injury.Ifyoufeelyouarelosingyourbalance,releasethebladecontrol handleimmediatelyandthebladewill stoprotatingwithinthree(3)
seconds.
Do Not:
Donotmowneardrop-offs,ditchesorembankments,becauseyoucould loseyourfootingorbalance.
Donotmowslopesgreaterthan15degreesasshownontheslopeguide. Donotmowonwetgrass.Unstablefootingcouldcauseslipping.
CHILDREN
TragicaccidentscanoccuriftheoperatorisnotalerttothepresenceofcNIdren. Childrenareoftenattractedto themowerandthemowingactivity.Theydonot understandthedangers.Neverassumethatchildrenwill remainwhereyoulastsaw
them.
Keepchildrenoutofthemowingareaandunderwatchfulcareof a responsibleadultotherthantheoperator.
Bealertandturnmoweroffifa childentersthearea.
Beforeandwhilemovingbackwards,lookbehindanddownforsmall
children.
Useextremecarewhenapproachingblindcorners,doorways,shrubs,trees,
orotherobjectsthatmayobscureyourvisionofachildwhomayrunintothe
mower.
Keepchildrenawayfromhotorrunningengines.Theycansufferburnsfrom
ahotmuffler.
Neverallowchildrenunder14yearsofagetooperatethismachine.Children 14andovershouldreadandunderstandtheinstructionsandsafeoperation practicesinthismanualandonthemachineandbetrainedandsupervised byanadult.
SERVICE
Safe Handling of Gasoline: Toavoidpersonalinjuryorpropertydamageuseextremecareinhandling
gasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammableandthe vaporsareexplosive. Seriouspersonalinjurycanoccurwhengasolineisspilledonyourselfor your clotheswhichcanignite.Washyourskinandchangeclothesimmediately.
Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer. Neverfill containersinsideavehicleoronatruckortrailerbedwith a plastic
liner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthegroundawayfromyourvehiclebefore
filling.
Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruckortrailerandrefuelit on theground.Ifthisisnotpossible,thenrefuelsuchequipmenton atrailer with a portablecontainer,ratherthanfromagasolinedispensernozzle.
Keepthenozzleincontactwiththerimofthefueltankorcontaineropening atalltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.Donotuseanozzlelock-opendevice.
Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersources ofignition.
Neverfuelmachineindoorsbecauseflammablevaporswill accumulatein thearea.
Neverremovegascaporaddfuelwhileengineishotorrunning. Allow engineto coolatleasttwo minutesbeforerefueling.
Neverover-fillfueltank.Toallowforexpansionof thefuel,donotfill above thebottomof thefueltankneck.
Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.
Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeitoffthe engineandequipment.Movemachineto anotherarea.Wait5 minutesbeforestartingengine.
NeverstorethemacNneorfuelcontainernearanopenflame,sparkorpilot
lightasonawaterheater,spaceheater,furnace,clothesdryerorothergas appliances.
Toreducefire hazard,keepmachinefreeofgrass,leaves,orotherdebris
build-up.Cleanupoilorfuelspillageandremoveanyfuel-soakeddebris. Allowmachinetocoolatleast5minutesbeforestoring.

Neverrunanengineindoorsorinapoorlyventilatedarea.Engineexhaust containscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessanddeadlygas.
Beforecleaning,repairing,orinspecting,makecertainthebladeandall movingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthesparkplugwireandground againsttheenginetopreventunintendedstarting.
Checkthebladeandenginemountingboltsatfrequentintervalsforproper tightness.Also,visuallyinspectbladefordamage(e.g.,bent,cracked,worn). Replacebladewith theoriginalequipmentmanufacture's(O.EM.)blade only,listedinthe Partspagesofthismanual.Useof partswhichdonotmeet theoriginalequipmentspecificationsmayleadtoimproperperformance andcompromisesafety!
Mowerbladesaresharpandcancut.Wrapthebladeorweargloves,anduse extracautionwhenservicingthem.
Keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewstightto besuretheequipmentisin safe workingcondition.
Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheir properoperationregularly. Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stoptheengine,disconnectthesparkplug
wireandgroundagainsttheengine.Thoroughlyinspectthemowerforany damage.Repairthedamagebeforestartingandoperatingthe mower.
Neverattempttomakeawheelorcuttingheightadjustmentwhilethe engineisrunning.
Grasscatchercomponents,dischargecover,andtrailshieldaresubjectto wearanddamagewhichcouldexposemovingpartsorallowobjectsto be thrown.Forsafetyprotection,frequentlycheckcomponentsandreplace immediatelywithoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's(0.EM.)partsonly, listedinthePartspagesof thismanual.Useofpartswhichdonotmeetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto improperperformanceand compromisesafety!
Donotchangetheengine'sgovernorsettingorover-speedtheengine.The governorcontrolsthemaximumsafeoperatingspeedof theengine.
Checkfuelline,tank,cap,andfittingsfrequentlyfor cracksor leaks.Replace if necessary.
Donotcrankenginewithsparkplugremoved. Maintainorreplacesafetyandinstructionlabels,asnecessary. Observeproperdisposallawsandregulations.Improperdisposalof fluids
andmaterialscanharmtheenvironment. AccordingtotheConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC)andtheU.S.
EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),thisproducthasanAverageUseful Lifeofseven(7)years,or140hoursofoperation.At theendoftheAverage UsefulLifehavethemachineinspectedannuallybyaSearsorotherqualified servicedealertoensurethatallmechanicalandsafetysystemsareworking properlyandnotwornexcessively.Failuretodosocanresultinaccidents, injuriesordeath.

Toavoidseriousinjuryordeath,do not modifyengineinanyway.Tampering
with the governorsetting canleadto a runawayengineandcauseitto operateat unsafespeeds.Nevertamperwith factorysettingof engine
governor.

Engineswhich arecertified to complywith CaliforniaandfederalEPA emissionregulationsfor SORE(SmallOff RoadEquipment)arecertified to operateonregularunleadedgasoline,andmayincludethefollowing
emissioncontrolsystems:EngineModification(EM),OxidizingCatalyst(OC), SecondaryAirInjection(SAI)andThreeWayCatalyst(TWC)ifsoequipped.
SPARK ARRESTOR
Thismachineisequippedwith aninternalcombustionengineandshould not beusedonor nearanyunimprovedforest-covered,brushcoveredor grass-coveredlandunlesstheengine'sexhaustsystemisequippedwith a sparkarrestormeetingapplicablelocalor state laws(if any).
Ifasparkarrestor isused,it shouldbemaintained in effectiveworkingorder
bythe operator.Inthe Stateof Californiathe aboveisrequiredby law(Section 4442of the CaliforniaPublicResourcesCode).Otherstatesmayhavesimilar

Keepafirm griponthestarter cordhandletopreventrapidretraction of startercord(kickback).Rapidretraction canpull handandarmtoward enginefasterthan youcanlet go,and result inbrokenbones,fractures, bruisesor sprains.

1. Releasebladecontrolto stoptheengineandblade.
Waitfor the bladeto stopcompletelybeforeperforming anyworkonthe mowerorto removethegrasscatcher.

UsingYourLawnMower
Besurelawnisclearof stones,sticks,wire,orotherobjectswhichcoulddamage lawnmowerorengine.Suchobjectscouldbeaccidentlythrownbythemowerin anydirectionandcauseseriouspersonalinjuryto theoperatorandothers.
Oncetheengineisrunningandwhilecontinuingtoholdthebladeanddrive controlstogether,pushthedrivecontrolforwardto propelmower.Thefarther thecontrolispushedforward,thefasterthe mowerwillpropel.Oncepressureis releasedfromthecontrolitwill returntothe neutralpositionandthedrivewill be disengaged.Referto Figure15.
NOTE:Foreaseofuse,whilegrippingthecontrols,simplylockyourwristand elbowsandwalk-the unitwill automaticallyadjusttoyourspeed.
Theoperationof anylawnmowercanresultinforeign objectsbeing thrown intotheeyes,whichcandamageyoureyesseverely.Always wearsafetyglasseswhileoperatingthe mower,orwhileperforming any adjustmentsor repairson it.

UsingasMulcher
Formulchinggrass,removethegrasscatcherorsidedischargechutefromthe mower.Whenyouremovethegrasscatcherfromthemower,thereardischarge doorwill close.Whenyouremovethesidedischargechute,themulchingcoverwill close.Foreffectivemulching,donotcutwetgrass.Ifthegrasshasbeenallowedto growinexcessof fourinches,mulchingisnotrecommended.Usethegrasscatcher tobagclippingsinstead.

1. Attachgrasscatcherfollowinginstructionsinthe"Assembly"section.Grass clippingswill automaticallycollectinbagasyourunmower.Operatemower
untilgrassbagisfull.
2. Stopenginecompletelybyreleasingthebladecontrol.Makesurethatthe unithascometoacompletestop.
3. Lift dischargedoorandpullgrassbagupandawayfromthemowerto removethebag.Disposeofthegrassclippingsandreinstallthebagwhen
complete. NOTE:Makesuretocleananyexcessgrassfromaroundtherearopeningof
themower,especiallybetweenthetransmissioncoverandsidewallonthe
lefthandsideandalongthebottom,toensuretight fit of bagontomower.
Ifyoustrikea foreign object, stopthe engine.Disconnectthe sparkplug wire,thoroughly inspectmowerfor any damage,andrepairdamage beforerestartingandoperating.Extensivevibration of mowerduring operationis anindicationof damage.Theunit shouldbe promptly inspectedandrepaired.

EngineMaintenance
SparkPlug
Forgoodperformance,thesparkplugmustbeproperlygappedandfreeof deposits.Replacethesparkplugannually.
I. Disconnectthecapfromthesparkplug,andremoveanydirtfromthespark
plugarea.
2. Usethepropersizesparkplugwrenchtoremovethesparkplug.
3. Visuallyinspectthesparkplug.Discardthesparkplugifthereisapparent wear,orif theinsulatoriscrackedorchipped.Cleanthesparkplugwith a
wirebrushif it isto bereused.
4. Checkthegapwithawiregauge.SeeFigure16.Sparkpluggapshouldbe
0.030in(0.76mm).Ifnecessary,resetthegap.
5. Checkthatthesparkplugwasherisingoodconditionandthreadthespark pluginbyhandto preventcross-threading.
6. Afterthesparkplugisseated,tightenwith asparkplugwrenchtocompress thewasher.
NOTE:Wheninstallinganewsparkplug,tighten1/2turnafterthespark plugseatsto compressthewasher.Whenreinstallingausedsparkplug, tighten1/8-1/4turn afterthesparkplugseatsto compressthewasher.
IMPORTANT:Thesparkplugmustbesecurelytightened.Animproperly tightenedsparkplugcanbecomeveryhotandmaydamagetheengine.
Attachthesparkplugcaptothesparkplug.

Paperfilterscannotbecleanedandmustbereplacedonceayearorevery100 operatinghours;moreoftenif usedinextremelydustyconditions.
