1.3 Design Overview

The Compaq Deskpro 4000S and 4000N Series of Personal Computers are designed to use a pantype chassis to house the system board, expansion boards, power supply, and mass storage devices. The chassis is supplemented by a riser board attached to the expansion board cage. The expansion board cage provides a mounting location for the expansion board.
All internal components are accessible when the hood, held in place by two latches, is removed. Lifting the Easy Access Drive Bay and Easy Access Power Supply to their upright positions allows full access to the system board. The front bezel is mounted to the front of the system unit cover. Torx T-15 screws are used to secure the Easy Access Drive Bay hinge bar and the Easy Access Power Supply hinge bracket.
The system board is easily removed from the chassis after the hood and expansion board cage are removed. Details of the disassembly procedure are found in Chapter 5, “Removal and Replacement Procedures.”
The removable expansion board cage mounts perpendicular to the system board. The expansion board installation is horizontal into the cage and is secured with a single screw.
The Easy Access Power Supply is mounted in the right rear corner of the chassis and pivots using a pair of built-in hinges. The AC input cord must be removed prior to disconnecting the power supply from the system board.

Fault Management
Fault management features combine innovative hardware and software technology to prevent the loss of critical data and minimize unplanned downtime. When a fault occurs, the computer displays a Local Alert message containing a description of the fault and any recommended actions. You can then view current system health by using Compaq Insight Personal Edition. If the computer is connected to a network managed by Compaq Insight Manager or other SNMP-based management products, the computer also sends a fault notice to the network management application.
Fault Management features:
ECC fault prediction and prefailure warranty (with optional ECC memory only). ECC Fault Prediction provides an alert when the computer encounters an excessive number of error checking and correcting memory errors. The Prefailure Warranty for ECC memory modules allows you to replace modules with errors while within the Compaq three year warranty, before the memory module fails.
SMART II hard drives fault prediction monitor hard drive activity to predict failures before they occur. Fault prediction and failure indication parameters, such as abnormal variations in spinup and seek times, or non-correctable read and write errors, are tracked to determine the hard drive condition.
Monitor fault diagnosis detects when the operating temperature exceeds the normal range or when a hardware fault occurs, such as power voltage or current out of range, horizontal or vertical deflection, or I/O controller failure
Ultra ATA Integrity Monitoring observes the integrity of data as it is transferred between an optional Ultra ATA hard drive and the system’s core logic
Integrated surge-tolerant power supply provides protection when the computer is hit with an unpredictable power surge.
Temperature Monitoring is a hardware and software feature that tracks the internal temperature of the computer.

When the computer is plugged into an AC power source there is always voltage applied to the

4.1 Electrostatic Discharge Information

A sudden discharge of static electricity from your finger or other conductor can destroy staticsensitive devices or microcircuitry. Often the spark is neither felt nor heard, but damage occurs. An electronic device exposed to electrostatic discharge (ESD) may not be affected at all and can work perfectly throughout a normal cycle. The device may function normally for a while, then degrade in the internal layers, reducing its life expectancy.
Networks built into many integrated circuits provide some protection, but in many cases, the discharge contains enough power to alter device parameters or melt silicon junctions.

4.1.1 Generating Static

Table 4-1 shows how different activities generate static electricity at different electrostatic voltage levels.

700 volts can degrade a product.

4.1.2 Preventing Electrostatic Damage to Equipment

Many electronic components are sensitive to ESD. Circuitry design and structure determine the degree of sensitivity. The following proper packaging and grounding precautions are necessary to prevent damage to electric components and accessories.
To avoid hand contact, transport products in static-safe containers such as tubes, bags, or boxes.
Protect all electrostatic parts and assemblies with conductive or approved containers or
packaging. Keep electrostatic sensitive parts in their containers until they arrive at static-free stations.
Place items on a grounded surface before removing them from their container.
Always be properly grounded when touching a sensitive component or assembly.
Avoid contact with pins, leads, or circuitry.
Place reusable electrostatic-sensitive parts from assemblies in protective packaging or conductive
foam.

For stronger stains, use a mild dishwashing liquid diluted with water. Rinse well by wiping it
with a cloth or swab dampened with clear water.
For stubborn stains, use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. No rinsing is needed as the alcohol will evaporate quickly and not leave a residue.
After cleaning, always wipe the unit with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Occasionally, clean the air vents on the computer. Lint and other foreign matter can block the
vents and limit the airflow.

4.2.3 Cleaning the Keyboard

Follow all safety precautions in Section 4.2.1 before cleaning the keyboard. To clean the tops of the keys or the keyboard body, follow the procedures described in Section 4.2.2. When cleaning debris from under the keys, review all rules in Section 4.2.1 before following these
procedures:

Page 72
If you remove a key, use a specially designed key puller to prevent damage to the keys. This tool
is available through many electronic supply outlets.
CAUTION: Never remove a wide levelled key (like the space bar) from the keyboard. If these keys are improperly removed or installed, the keyboard may not function properly.
Cleaning under a key may be done with a swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol and squeezed
out. Be careful not to wipe away lubricants necessary for proper key functions. Use tweezers to remove any fibers or dirt in confined areas. Allow the parts to air dry before reassembly.

4.2.4 Cleaning the Monitor

Wipe the monitor screen with a clean cloth moistened with water or with a towlette designed for
cleaning monitors. Do not use sprays or aerosols directly on the screen, the liquid may seep into the housing and damage a component. Never use solvents or flammable liquids on the monitor.
To clean the monitor body follow the procedures in Section 4.2.2.

4.2.5 Cleaning the Mouse

Before cleaning the mouse, ensure that the power to the computer is turned off.
Clean the mouse ball by first removing the retaining plate and the ball from the housing. Pull out
