LED Expected Lifespan

LEDs gradually decline in brightness over time. HEAT is the dominant factor that leads to the acceleration of this decl in e. P ac k ag ed in cl us ters, LEDs exh i bit higher operating t em p eratures than in ideal or sing ul ar opt im um conditions. For this reason when all color LEDs are used at their fullest intensity, life of the LEDs is significantly reduced. It is estimated that a viable lifespan of 40,000 to 50,000 hours will be achieved under normal operational conditions. If improving on this lifespan expectancy is of a higher priority, place care in providing for lower operational temperatures. This may include climatic-environm ent al and the reduction of over all projecti on intensity.

AC Power

This fi xtur e h as an aut o-s w itc hing power su pp l y that c an ac commoda t e a wid e range of input vol tages (100 ~ 240 VAC, 50/60 Hz). Before powering on the unit, make sure the line voltage to which you are connecting it is within th e range of acc ept ed vol tages.
This fixture is designed for power linking from one COLORdash™ Quad to another COLORdash™ Quad fixture. This is done with IEC extensio n cables.
Always connect the fixture to a switched circuit. Never connect the fixture to a rheostat (variable
resistor) or dimmer circuit, even if the rheostat or dimmer channel is used only as a 0 to 100% switch.
To determine the power requirements for a particular fixture, see the label affixed to the back plate of the fixture or refer to the fixture’s specifications chart. A fixture’s listed current rating indicates its average current draw under normal conditions.
Always conne ct the fixt ure to a circuit wi th a suit abl e el ectri ca l ground.

Fuse Replacement

Disconnect the power cord before replacing a fuse and always replace with the same type fuse.
With a Phillips #2 head screwdriver, unscrew the fuse holder from its housing. Remove the damaged fuse from its h ol d er and replace w ith exac t same type fuse. Screw the fuse holder back in its place and reconnect power.

Rigging

This fixture m ay b e m ount ed in any safe position, provided there is adequate room for ventilation.
The fixture includ es a m oun ti ng yoke to which a rig gi ng cl am p c an be attached. Y ou mus t sup ply your own clamp and make sure the clamp is capable of supporting the weight of this fixture. You can order “C” and “O” clamps from any CHAUVET dealer or distributor (CLP-15, CLP-06 recommended).
There are two types of applications for this fixture: floor stand for up lighting, and overhead use for down lighting.
If you are using this fixture for down lighting, you must use at least one safety cable/chain for each fixture in addition to the double-bracket yoke.
If hanging the fixture for overhead use please follow the below steps:
1. Block acc ess bel ow th e w ork area and us e a suit able and stabl e pl atform when ins t alli ng or servicin g
fixture.
2. Always use safety cables. The safety cable must be capable of holding 10 times the weight of the fixture.
3. Verify that t h e struc ture can hol d 10 t i m es th e w eig ht of all to-b e ins talled fixtures.
After prolonged periods of operation, the fixture’s chassis may reach high temperatures. This fixture must be mounted in a ventilated location, as it uses natural convection cooling.
Mounting clamps are so ld separate ly .

Fixture Stacking

The fixtures may be stacked together horizontally to create a strip light or vertically f or a blinder effect . This can be used for runway lighting or cycloramas. With the different methods of bracket mounting, this turns the COLORd as h™ B at t en i nto a very vers atile lightin g tool.
It is recommended that a maximum of three fixtur e s be st a ck ed together at a ti m e.
You will still need to connect and configure each fixture separately. For the power, you may use the linking cables provided with the fixture.
Vertical Stacking (Hanging)
When rigging three units in a vertical arrangement using the provided brackets, you should use clamps with long pan bolts, such as Altman or Mega Clamp, to prevent the brackets’ flanges from interfering with the truss.

Fixture Linking

You will n eed a serial data link to ru n lig ht s h ows of on e or m ore f i xtu res using a DMX controller or to run synchronized shows on two or more fixtures set to a master/slave operating mode. The combined number of channels required by a ll the fixtures on a serial data link determines the number of fixtures the data link can support.
Fixtures on a serial data link must be daisy chained in one single line. To comply with the EIA-485 standard, no more than 32 fixtures should be connected on one data link. Connecting more than 32 fixtures on one serial data link without the use of a DMX optically-isolated splitter may result in deterioration of the digital DMX signal.
Maximum recommended serial data link distance: 500 m (1640 ft.) Maximum r ec om m en d ed number of fixtures on a seri al d ata lin k: 32

Data Cabling

To link fixtures together you must obtain data cables . You can purchase CHAUVET certified DMX cables directly from a dealer/distributor or construct your own cable. If you choose to create your own cable, please use data-grade cables that can carry a high quality signal and are less prone to electromagnetic interference.

DMX Data Cable

Use a Belden© 9841 or equivalent cable which meets the specifications for EIA RS-485 app lications . Standard microphone cables cannot transmit DMX data reliably over long distances. The cable must have the following characteristics:
Type: shielded, 2-conductor twisted pair Maximum capacitance between conductors: 30 pF/ft Maximum capacitance between conductor and shield: 55 pF/ft Maximum resistance: 20 ohms/1000 ft Nomina l imp edance: 100 ~ 140 o hms

Cable Connectors

The cabl e mus t h ave a m al e X LR c onnector on on e end and a femal e XLR c onn ec tor on the oth er end .
Do not allow contact between the common and the fixture’s chassis ground. Grounding the common can cause a ground loo p, and your fixture may perform errat ic all y. Test the cable s wit h an oh mm eter to verify correct polarity, and to make sure the pins are not grounded or shorted to each other.

4. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Control Options

The COLORdash™ Batten is addressable in the DMX range of 001 to 512. In its simplest control form, this allows for the control of up to 51 fixtures in the 10-channel STAGE 1 personality; however, a secondary ID address system exists for use in a limited DMX universe and architectural environments. The ID address system allows the user to assign up to 66 fixtures within the same DMX addr ess , in effect multiplying the control of the C OLO Rd ash™ Batte n withi n a sin gl e un i ver se to 3,366 fix tures. The ID address system is accessed using DMX channel 9 (STAGE 1). Consider ation must be pl ac ed when progr am mi n g li ve p erformanc es or cu es that need to trigger on deman d or on a time line. So, to remain within one second execution time, program no greater than 10 fixtures on ID addressing per DMX channel.

DMX Control without ID Addressing

The COLORdash™ Batten operat es on 10 DMX channels (STAGE 1), 12 DMX channels (BLOCK), three DMX channels (ARC 1) or four DMX channels (ARC 1 + D). Address each fixture in increments of the number of channels in use. For example, if using the STAGE 1 mode, each fixture could be addressed 1, 11, 21, 31, etc. To save time you can use the same DMX address for each fixture. In this case, all fixtures will respond simultaneously to the DMX control. You may also group your fixtur es and address thos e groups alik e f or f ast er programmi ng and control .
1. Access the control panel function by pressing the <MENU> button until Run Mode shows.
2. Press <ENTER> and use <UP>/<DOWN> to select the DMX function.
3. Press <MENU> until DMX address shows.
4. Press <ENTER>.
5. Use <UP>/<DOWN> to increase or decrease channels between 001 and 512.
6. Press <ENTER> to confirm this action. OK and save will brie fly show.
7. To exit, press <MENU>.
8. Deactivate ID addressing in each fixture by setting panel function ID ON/O FF to OFF.
MENU > SETTINGS > ID ON/OFF >OFF
If ID addressing is not deactivated in the fixture’s control panel function, unintended results may occur if values are present in channel 9. Make sure values on channel 9 are set to 0.

DMX Control with ID Addressing

1. Follow instructions 1 ~ 4 for DMX addressing.
2. Activate ID addressing in each fixture by setting panel function ID ON/OFF to ON. MENU > Settings > ID ON/OFF > ON
3. For every DMX starting address the user can set 66 separate ID addresses.
4. Set ID addresses in each fixture by setting panel function ID address to increment al val u es. (For example, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc.)
MENU > Settings > ID addr es s > 01 ~ 66

Configuring the Starting Address

Each fixture requires a starting address from 1 ~ 512. A fixture requiring one or more channels for control begins to read the data on the channel indicated by the starting address. For example, a fixture that uses seven DMX channels and is addressed to start on DMX channel 100, will read data from channels: 1 00 , 10 1, 102, 103, 104, 105 and 106. 6. APPENDIX

DMX Primer

There ar e 512 ch ann els in a DMX connection. Channels may be assigned in any manner. A f ixture capable of receiving DMX will r equ ire one or a number of s eq u ential ch ann els . The user must ass i g n a starting address on the fixture that indicates the first channel reserved in the controller. There are many different types of DMX controllable fixtures and t hey all may vary in the total number of chann els requ i r ed. C h oos ing a start address shou ld be pl anned in advance. Channels shoul d n ever overlap. If they do, this will result in erratic operation of the fixtures whose starting address is set incorrectly. You can however, control multiple fixtures of the same type using the same starting address as l ong as the intended r es ult is th at of unison movem en t or op eration. In ot h er w ords , th e fixtures will be slaved together and all respond exactly the same.
DMX f ixtures are des igned to receive data through a serial Daisy Chain. A Daisy Chain connection is where the DATA OUT of one fixture connects to the DATA IN of the next fixture. The order in which the fixtures are connected is not important and has no effect on how a controller com mu nicates t o each fixture. Use an order that provides for the easiest and most direct cabling. Connect fixtures using shielded two conductor twisted pair cable with three pin XLR male to female connectors. The shield connection is pin 1, while pin 2 is Data Negative (S-) and pin 3 is Data positive (S+). CHAUVET car ri es 3-pin XLR DMX compliant cables, DMX-10 (33’), DMX-4.5 (15’) and DMX-1.5 (5’)

General Maintenance

To maintain optimum performance and minimize wear, fixtures should be cleaned frequently. Usage and environment are contributing factors in determining frequency. As a general rule, fixtures should be cleaned at least twice a month. Dust build up reduces light output performance and can cause overheating. This can lead to reduced lamp life and increased mechanical wear. Be sure to power off fixture before cond uc t in g m ain tenanc e.
Unplug fixture from power.
Use a vacuum or air c om pr essor and a soft brush to remo ve d us t c oll ect ed on external
vents and internal components.
Clean all glass when the fixture is cold with a mild solution of glass cleaner or Isopropyl
Alcohol and a soft lint free cotton cloth or lens tissue.
Apply solution to the cloth or tissue and drag dirt and grime to the outside of the lens.
Gently polish optical surfaces until they are free of haze and lint.
The clean in g of internal and external op t ical lenses and/ or m irrors mus t be c arri ed out p eriodicall y to optimi z e ligh t output. Clean i ng frequency depends on t h e envi ronment in whic h the fixture operates. Damp, sm ok y or p art ic ularly dirty surroundings can cause greater accumulation of dirt on th e uni t ’s optics. Clean with soft cloth using normal glass cleaning fluid. Clean the external optics at least every 20 days. Cl ean the inter n al optic s at least every 30/60 days.
Always dry the parts carefully after cleaning them.
Never spin a fan using compressed air.
