10.Power Sources — The CA-570 Compact Power Adaptershould be operated only from the type ofpower source indicatedonthe marking label. If you are not sure ofthe typeof powersupply to your home,consult your product dealer or localpower company. Regarding other power sources such asbattery power, refer to instructions in this manual.
11.Polarization — The CA-570 Compact Power Adapteris equippedwith a polarized 2-prong plug(a plughaving one blade wider than the other).
The 2-prong polarized plugwill fitintothe power outlet only one way. This isa safetyfeature. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into theoutlet, try reversing the plug. Iftheplug still fails tofit, contact yourelectrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeatthesafety purpose ofthepolarized plug.
12.Power Cord Protection — Power cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon oragainstthem. Pay particularattention to plugs andthe point from which the cords exit the product.

Using a Household Power Source
Connect to a household powersourceto use thecamcorderwithout worryingaboutthe battery power. You can keep the battery pack attached; the battery power will not beconsumed.
1.Turn theswitch to.
2.Connect the power cord to the power adapter.
3.Plug the power cord into a power outlet.
4.Connect the power adapter to the camcorder’sDC IN terminal.
Turn off thecamcorder before connectingor disconnecting thepoweradapter.Ifthe adapter is used close to a TV, it may cause picture interference. Move the
adapter awayfrom the TVor the antenna cable.
Donot connect any products that are not expressly recommended to the
camcorder’s DC IN terminal or to the power adapter.
Youmay hear some noise fromthe poweradapterduring use. Thisisnot a
malfunction.
Do not disconnect and reconnect the power cord while charging a battery pack.
Chargingmay stop.Thebattery packmay notbe charged correctlyeven if the CHARGE indicator iscontinuously on. The battery packmay also not becharged correctlywhen a poweroutageoccurs duringcharging. Removethe battery pack and attachit back to the camcorder.
When the power adapter or the battery packis defective, the CHARGE
indicator flashes rapidly (at about 2 flashes/second) and charging stops.

We recommend chargingthe battery pack in temperatures between 10°C and
30°C(50 °F and 86 °F). Outsidethetemperature range of0°C to 40 °C (32 °Fto 104 °F), the charging will not start. If the battery temperature goes outsidethis temperature range while charging, theCHARGEindicator will start flashing rapidly and the charging will stop.
A lithium ion battery pack can be charged at any charge state. Unlike
conventional batterypacks, you do not needtocompletely use ordischargeitbefore charging.
We recommend that you prepare batterypacks 2 to 3 times longer thanyou
think you mightneed.
To conserve battery power, turn off the camcorder instead of leaving it in record
pause mode.

Installing the Backup Battery
The backup battery (lithium button battery CR1616) allows the camcorder to retain thedate, time ( 21) and other camcordersettingswhile the power source is disconnected.Connecta powersource to the camcorderwhen replacing the backupbattery to retain thesettings.
1.Open the backup battery cover.
2.Insert the backup battery with the + side facingout.
3.Close the cover.
The backupbattery has a lifespan of about a year. “” flashes in red to informyou that it needs tobereplaced.

Loading/Unloading a Cassette
Use only videocassettes marked with the logo.
1.Slide the OPEN/EJECT switch and open the cassette compartment cover.
The cassettecompartment opens automatically.
2.Load/unload the cassette.
•Load the cassette withthe window
facingthe grip belt.
•Unload thecassette bypulling it straight
out.
3.Press the mark on the cassette compartment until it clicks.
4.Wait for the cassette compartment to retract automatically and close the cassette compartment cover.

Make a test recording first to check if the camcorder operates correctly. If necessary,clean the video heads (113).

About the LCD and viewfinder screen: The screens are produced with
DISPLAYSETUP/LEVELMARKEROFF
extremely high-precision manufacturing techniques, with more than
99.99% of the pixels operating to specification. Less than 0.01% ofthepixels may occasionally misfire orappearas blackor greendots. This hasno effecton the recorded image and does not constitute a malfunction.
When powered by a battery pack, the camcorder shuts off to save power if
left without any operation for 5 minutes. Approximately 30seconds beforethe camcordershutsoff the message “ AUTOPOWER OFF” willappear. To continue recording, turn the switchto and thenback to CAMERA.
Wait until the tape counter stopscompletely before you start recording.When you donot remove the cassette, you can record the next scene without
producing any noiseor blank sections between the recordings even if you turn the camcorder off.
Bright light may make it difficult to use the LCD screen. In such case, use the
viewfinder instead.
When recording near loudsounds (such asfireworks,drums or concerts),
sound maybecome distortedor maybe recorded notin the actual soundlevel.This is not a malfunction.
Allowing the Subject to Monitor the LCD Screen
You can rotate the LCD panel so that the screen faces in thesame direction as the lens. The viewfinder switches on allowingyou to use the viewfinder while the subjectcanmonitorthe screen.
Displaying the Level Marker
Use the level marker as a horizontalguideline to frame subjects more accurately.

•Depending on the type of the tape, the indication may not be displayed correctly.

Using a Memory Card
Inserting and Removing a Memory
Card
You can use commercially available SD Memory Cards orMultiMediaCards(MMC) with this camcorder. The SD MemoryCard has a protect switch to prevent accidental erasure. Memorycardshave frontand back sides that are notinterchangeable.Insertingamemory card facing the wrongdirection can causea malfunction of thecamcorder.
Inserting the Card
1.Turn off the camcorder.
2.Open the cover.
3.Insert the memory card all the way into the memory card slot.
4.Close the cover.

Connection to a computer or PictBridge compliant printer will not work when the

When you are usingaMacintosh computer, you may not be abletodownloadimage with ImageBrowseror with OSstandard software whenthe memory card contains more than 1000images. When the Focus-Priority mode is set to[ON:AiAF] or [ON: CENTER]:

Recording Movies on a Memory Card
You can recordMotion JPEG movies withthe camcorder, fromatapein thecamcorder orfrom devices connected viathe DV terminal orthe AV terminal. The sound of a movierecorded on a memory card will be monaural.
1.Select the movie sizefor recording on the card: Open the FUNC. menu and select ()the movie size icon. Select () a setting option other than the default [MOVIE REC OFF] and close the menu.
2.Press the start/stop button to begin recording.
With SDMemory Cards upto 2GB, you can record until“CARD FULL” appears (approx.32 minutes with a 512 MB SD Memory Card).With MultiMediaCards, the recording timeislimited to 10sec. in 320 x 240 pixels or 30 sec. in 160 x 120 pixels.

Printing Still Images
The camcordercan be connectedtoany PictBridgecompatible printer. You can use the print ordersettings for direct printing ofstill images recorded on thememory card (100).Canon printers: SELPHYCP, SELPHYDS and PIXMA printers.
Connecting the Printer to the Camcorder
PictBridge compatible printer
1.Turn off the camcorder and insert amemory card that contains still images.
2.Turnon the printer.
3.Set the camcorder to mode.
4.Connect the camcorder to the printer using the USB cable.

Printing Errors
If an error occurs duringthe printing process,an errormessage appears(110).
-Canon’s PictBridge compatible printers:Resolve theerror.Whenprintingdoesnot resume automatically,select[CONTINUE] and press (). If [CONTINUE] cannot beselected, select [STOP], press() and retryprinting. Refer also to the printer manual for details.
-If theerror still persists and printing doesnot restart:
