The following precautions should be observed when servicing.
1.Since many parts in the unit have special safety-related characteristics, always use genuine CANON replacement parts.
Especially critical parts in the power circuit block should not be replaced with other makes.
Critical parts are marked with ! in the schematic diagrams.
2.When servicing, observe the original lead dress. If a short circuit is found, replace all parts which have been overheated or damaged
by the short circuit.
3.After servicing, see to it that all the protective devices such as insulation barriers, insulation papers shields are properly installed.
4.After servicing, make the following leakage current checks to prevent the customer from being exposed to shock hazards.
4-1 Leakage Current Cold Check
1) Unplug the AC cord and connect a jumper between the two prongs on the plug.
2) Measure the resistance value, with an ohmmeter, between the jumpered AC plug and each exposed metallic cabinet part
on the equipment such as screwheads, connectors, control shafts, etc. When the exposed metallic part has a return path to
the chassis, the reading should be between 1MΩ and 5.2MΩ. When the exposed metal does not have a return path to the
chassis, the reading must be ∞.
4-2 Leakage Current Hot Check
1) Plug the AC cord directly into the AC outlet. Do not use an isolation transformer for this check.
2) Connect a 1.5KΩ 10 watt resistor, paralleled by 0.15µF capacitor, between each exposed metallic parts on the unit and a
good earth ground such as a water pipe, as shown in the figure below.
3) Use an AC voltmeter, with 1000Ω/volt or more sensitivity, to measure the potential across the resistor.
4) Check all exposed metallic parts of the cover (Cable connection, Handle bracket, metallic cabinet.
Screwheads, Metallic overlays, etc), and measure the voltage at each point.
5) Reverse the AC plug in the AC outlet and repeat each of the above measurements.
6) The potential at any point should not exceed 0.75V RMS.
A leakage current tester (FLUKE MODEL : 8000A equivalent) may be used to make the hot checks.
Leakage current must not exceed 0.5 milliamp.
In case a measurement is outside of the limits specified, there is a possibility of a shock hazard, and corrective action must
be taken before returning the instrument to the customer.

1-1 Development Objectives
Canon began offering the PowerShot A100/PowerShot A200 to consumers who “want to enjoy a
straightforward digital camera” in the spring of 2002.
With their excellent image quality, classy looks and advanced features that transcended their class, the
2-megapixel PowerShot A200 and the 1.2-megapixel PowerShot A100 offered consumers who
wanted to enjoy a simple, easy-to-use digital camera complete satisfaction. Looking ahead to the
2003’s market, however, we find that we must keep moving toward higher resolutions and keep
enhancing movie features to maintain our advantage over our competitors.
With this background in mind, we decided to introduce a new top-of-the-line model, the PowerShot A300, wit
approx. 3.2-mega camera effective pixels. The PowerShot A300 offers even better image quality, enhanced
movie features and improved operability while maintaining the same fundamental design concept o
the 2-megapixel PowerShot A200 and the 1.2-megapixel PowerShot A100. The new camera’s goal is
to have the “best image quality and most advanced features” of any camera in the entry-level class.

Camera effective pixels : Approx. 3.2 M, 1/2.7" type
-Approx. 3.2M camera effective pixel CCD (Total of Approx. 3.3M-pixels)
The PowerShot A300 comes with a CCD sensor with approx.
3.2-mega effective pixels (Approx. 3.3 megapixels in
total), which is similar to the IXY DIGITAL 320 sensor.
The area of this CCD sensor chip has been reduced by
a remarkable 39 percent from the previous 1/1.8-inch
approx. 3.2-effective-megapixel CCD sensor (approx.
3.3 total megapixels) found on the PowerShot G1/S30.
Figure 2-1 Chip relative area comparison
However it achieves the equivalent performance to the
previous sensor owing to improvement of the picture
element’s structure and the electronic charge’s drive method.
The PowerShot A300 is equipped with the 5 mm, f/2.8 single-focallength lens used on the PowerShot A200/A100. The lens
consists of 5 elements in 5 groups including one aspherical
(single-sided) lens. Focusing is accomplished by a full
sprocket method in which all five lenses move.
The 35 mm equivalent focal length of the lens has become
slightly wider — 33 mm compared with 39 mm for the PowerShot A200/A100 — due to the change in the screen size
of the CCD sensor. This allows the camera to get more out
Figure 2-2 Lens construction (Conceptual)
of composite photos and landscape shots.
For the same reason as the change in focal length, the maximum aperture has changed from f/2.8 to f/
3.6.
- High definition and fast processing with the Digital Imaging Processor "DIGIC"
The PowerShot A300 comes equipped with the
"DIGIC"a digital imaging processor. DIGIC achieves
enhanced high picture quality by improving
signal processing algorithms as the successor of
prior processor.
Furthermore it saves power.
The following three elements are the principle
contributions to the PowerShot A300.
–Improved picture quality
–Improved AF accuracy

based on iSAPS technology
Using “Photographic Space” information, the
PowerShot A300 estimates the distance between the
camera and the subject from the focal length (zoom
osition)* of the lens and the peripheral brightness
when taking a photo. Furthermore, by adding the
hoto paramenters obtained with the previous
hoto, the scene the user is about to shoot is preanalyzed and pre-calculated. This method achieves
faster AF and more precise, AE and AWB than
ever before.
* The PowerShot A300 has no optical zoom
Figure 2-4Distribution of object position at specific
focal length
>iSAPS High-speed AF
Using iSAPS technology, the cameras achieve fasror focusing speeds by optimizing the control of the
AF scan range through a pre-analysis process to match the scene the user is about to shoot.
>iSAPS Intelligent AE/AWB
Using iSAPS technology, the cameras achieve precise exposure and white balance through an algorithm optimized for the scene the user is about to shoot by analyzing the scene beforehand.
-High-precision white balance (Auto + Five preset positions + Custom)
The PowerShot A300 adds custom white balance to the white balance functions (auto and five-position preset) .
The custom white balance allows the user to record a desired white reference (usually a white piece of
aper) beforehand under the shooting conditions (light sources) employing a camcorder or other
device. This white reference data is stored in the camera and used.
This function is useful when users cannot get the white balance they want in the auto mode or from
one of the five presets when shooting under special light sources or when mixing two or more light
sources.
The custom white balance data is maintained even when the power is turned off and can be updated
anytime by performing the sampling operation again.

2-2 Full Features
l
-5-point AiAF and 1-point AF selectable
The PowerShot A300 come with a
“5-point AiAF”, which increases the
number of AiAF measurement zones from the previous three (PowerShot
A200/A100) to five.
This improved AiAF system makes precise focusing possible regardless
of the position of the subject or the shooting orientation (vertical or horizontal). When focusing, the positions of the focused measurement
zones are displayed in green (when two or more positions are in focus,
all focused measurement zones are displayed).
Figure 2-5: 5-Point AiAF
The cameras are also equipped with standard single center-point AF,
enabling users to select the easiest AF function to suit the shooting conditions.
-Digital zoom function with continuously changing angle of view (Approx. 5.1x)
The digital zoom magnification of PowerShot A300 enlarges to approx. 5.1x owing to employment of 3M-pixe
CCD. It can adjust the field of view from 33mm to 168mm (35 mm film equivalent)
Furthermore, several dozen image input positions are calibrated for the monitor display to ensure a
smooth digital zoom of the image on the monitor display. The actual zoom position can be stopped
in seven positions in consideration of practicability.
Figure 2-6:Digital zoom (Couceptual)

- Three types of metering function (evaluative metering, center-weighted average metering and
spot metering)
With the PowerShot A300, the metering modes of center-weighted average and spot are added to PowerShot
A200/A100’s evaluative.
The center-weighted average metering measures light over the entire image and weights the sensitivity
according to proximity to the center of the image; accordingly, this light metering emphasizes the center of the image. The spot metering, light is measured within a specific portion at the center of the
image.
- Total of 12 image quality modes (recording pixels (4) x
compression (3) )
Since the number of CCD pixels has been increased to approx.
3.2 million camera effective pixels with PowerShot A300, there are
now 4 possible settings for the number of recording pixels: Large,
Medium 1, Medium 2, and Small. Since there are also 3 compression rates (Superfine, Fine and Normal), a total of 12 differ-

-Settable display times for rec review (Off, 3 to 10 seconds)
(Images can be erased during display)
The PowerShot A300 is specified so that the image-display time* in rec review (confirmation of recorded
image) can be set between 3 to 10 seconds in 1 second intervals. In this way, users can select a duration to suit their applications.
Furthermore the shot image can be erased during display in rec review.
* “Off” can also be set
- Direct Print function compatible (Card Photo Printers
and Bubble Jet printers)
The Direct Print function has been equipped to the PowerShot A300 so
that high-picture-quality prints can be made easily by merely
connecting the camera with the supplied cable to a Canon card
photo printer (CP-100/10

When making card size prints, prints on full-size label sheets or eight-label sheets are possible. When
connected to Bubble Jet printers, five paper sizes (L, 2L, postcard, A4 and credit-card) can be
selected. For each of these, border, borderless, multiple copies, indexing and trimming options are
available.
And since the BJ 895PD and BJ 535PD printers, and new BJ printers released in the spring of 2003,
support the Exif 2.2 standard, printing from the PowerShot A300 is automatically optimized for image quality.

2-3 Fulfiled Movie Function
-Three types of recording pixels (VGA/QVGA/QQVGA) for movie mode
(VGA is high image quality )
The PowerShot A300 can record movie clips with audio at a rate of 15 frames per second in one of three
recording pixels, VGA, QVGA or QQVGA.
Furthermore, the newly developed camera-effective 3.2M-pixel CCD can read one vertical line in
three, or approx. 520 lines per frame, thanks to a refinement in the electrode structure (charge-reading
method). This enables the camera to record
high-quality VGA size movies that not only 3megapixel digital cameras, but also digital
cameras equipped with conventional interline
Approx.1570Approx.520480

type CCDs can’t.
-Long movie recording with audio (internal microphone and speaker, max. of 3 minutes)
The PowerShot A300 can record moving images at 15 frames per second along with audio in 3 formats, VGA
(640 x 480 pixels), QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) and QQVGA (160 x 120 pixels). Because a method is
employed that consecutively writes images that are temporary stored in the buffer to the CF card while
recording, long continuous filming times are also achieved.
*1
In practice, if the write speed of the CF card is slower
than the speed to write an image to the buffer,
the recording will stop when the buffer capacity is reached. Taking this circumstance into account, the
specification limits the maximum recording time in VGA format to 30 sec.(When using FC-256MH)
and both QVGA and QQVGA formats to three minutes. Even after 30 sec. or 3 minutes of elapsed
filming, the PowerShot A300 allows the next recording to be resumed in less time than previous models.
During filming, the values for the focus, exposure and white balance determined at the beginning are
used continuously to the end of the recording. The storage time is also displayed on the LCD monitor
during filming.
The file is saved in AVI format, while the image is saved as Motion JPEG data and the audio data in
WAVE format (monaural).
Since the camera is equipped with an internal microphone and speaker, movie with sounds can be
played on the camera without connecting to a computer.
*1 The write speed varies depending on the brand and capacity of the CF card.
*2 If the free space on the CF card is less than the size of the recording, recording will stop just prior
to the CF card reaching full capacity.

1-12
-Unwanted scenes can be deleted in movie replay mode (image and audio)
The PowerShot A300 allows unwanted sections to be deleted in the movie replay mode. However, the sections
that can be deleted are either from the start of the movie recording to an arbitrary point or from an
arbitrary point to the end of the movie recording.

-1.5-inch amorphous silicon TFT LCD monitor with low power consumption back light
The PowerShot A300 uses the highly detailed, newly developed amorphous silicon TFT LCD monitor. Eve
outdoors, the visibility of this LCD monitor is greatly improved due to the efficient absorption of
external light as a result of a special optical film. Furthermore, this allows the use of a weaker backlight than conventional monitors, thereby reducing power consumption.
Figure 2-12 Cross-section of LCD monitor
-Slide type lens cover suggests easy operation
The PowerShot A300 has moved from the PowerShot A200/A100 lens cover, which operates with a one-click
(rotational) method to open and close, to a sliding style of cover. The sliding cover makes it easy to
see how to open and close the cover as well as making it possible to check if the cover is open or
closed at a glance.
